There is a difference between a tough schedule and a foolish schedule. The best teams in the country don't play 11-12 games against power 5 teams.

Yes and no. Overall, yes it favored us... barely. We won TOP in 7 of the 12 games we played. In those 7 games, we had a record of 5-2. In the games we lost TOP, we went 1-4, with the one win coming against LOLUVa. And in these games, just eyeballing it, but I'm going to say 2/3 to 3/4 of the drives we had on offense did not pick up a first down.
So yes, having an offense that could consistently pick up yards and score points would be a massive improvement over the ineptitude we've seen over the last decade or so.
I think you are misunderstanding. If he wants to implement an entirely new system and manner of football, then he should be able to. If they means that the team we put on the field isn't as good as if we just played to what they already know then so be it. Is rather him instill his brand of football so that the foundation and ethic is there for the future. Year 1 doesn't matter.

I see where you are coming from, but I think 5 is low. I completely agree that expectations need to be tempered but I think Frank and Lefty could pull 6 wins out of this team this year.
I also think we will be better than expected at RB. With Evans or Motley I think the QB run game will be a big part of the offense which will help the RBs look better.
In recent years, we have had a handful of commits between the Spring Game and summer camps. Not a single verbal from anyone during both events, blue chip recruit or not. As I said, I'm hopeful people are just watching and waiting to see the on-field product, but the silence is concerning. If we could just get a big commitment from someone like Hunter, that would get momentum going in a huge way. I will be very disappointed if we whiff on all the top guys currently considering us.
I agree with you that 8 wins is around where I can see this team. Heck I can see 11 or 12 if things get clocking early. But I'm trying to temper my expectations. I hope we win it all and I can come back here and celebrate. But if we only win 5 I won't cast aspersions on Fuente. It can take a while to get this thing going. Different situation, but it took him until year 3 at Memphis to get it going. I know our cupboard isn't bare, but it might not be exactly what we need either (especially at RB where we have a clear, in my mind, #1 and a lot of questions following after).
So, in essence, I'm noit disagreeing, I just dont want to say I'll be upset if we only win 5 games in Fuente's first year while he's, not rebuilding, but building for the future
think Williams is really the only in state guy they are ahead of us for though. I don't believe they have much of a shot at any of the other from the top 10.
Outside of hunter and capehart not sure who we are really in the mix for this year in the top 10 (already landed garbutt). Williams seems like a done deal to Clemson for me and can't blame him with their DE success lately and venables claiming a #1 defense recently.
TOP favored the offense in recent years despite our offensive ineptitude.

But, if you're going to have an "anytime, anywhere" mentality, you have to win some of those games, especially when they are big showcase games.

Nice to see we are in the mix for some top recruits, but even though it's WAY early, I'm a little concerned. After both the Spring Game and the big camp this weekend, radio silence so far on the recruiting trail. I'm hopeful that our recruiting situation is in "wait-and-see" mode and people want to see what Fuente and Co. can do on the field this season. But UVa is currently ahead of us for a top target - not a good look.
I'm with you. I'd watch us lose a game against a good opponent. We used to have the "anyone, anywhere" mentality and it's about damn time to get it back.
Regarding scheduling, the transition from an eight- to a potential nine-game ACC football schedule would certainly make Whit Babcock's job more difficult. Tech's scheduled a full slate of four non-conference opponents through 2025, with only a single open slot in 2022. The Hokies' savvy athletic director may be able to void game contracts with ease. However, in the seasons where Tech is doubled, or even tripled up with Power Five opponents on its non-conference slate, exactly which team to drop becomes a tough question to answer. Do Babcock, Justin Fuente, and other stakeholders favor a more winnable or marketable schedule.
Unpopular opinion, but I'm of the belief that you shouldn't shy away from a tough schedule. The best teams just win tough games.
