Projected cut at +4 right now, not looking good for Bubba or Fowler.

Yeah, I think regardless, our defense last year was an anomaly, not the standard.

In some ways I kind of hope we go under the radar this spring/summer/fall so we can come in and pop some people in the mouth who forgot Bud Foster was Bud Foster - I know Torrian was a big loss, but I wonder if it is a blessing in disguise and having two coaches back there in the secondary and the experience they bring pays off on the field like Coach Foster hopes. The potential of our defense always has fans salivating, but a small part of me really does hope we come in overlooked, maybe put a chip on their shoulder...

I was originally in the hard G crowd but I changed my stance after this:

The debate over how to pronounce GIF, which stands for Graphics Interchange Format, re-emerged this week when Steve Wilhite, the inventor of the widely used Web illustration, declared it should be pronounced "jif," like the brand of peanut butter, rather than with a hard G sound.

...well I did not know that...

Its a good thing I didnt have twitter nor was a college athlete while attending VT, who knows what I would have said after some of my exams...I can 100% relate to that, I take back my prior comment now hahah...

I don't expect him to be the guy this year but he's a great talent and could be the guy down the road.

This. Lawson has plenty of time to learn, develop, prove himself to the coaches, team and fans.

I think a lot of us expected him to be (a poor man's) Deshawn Watson, and be a starter by year two, but that's not happening. Let's say Evan's is the starter for the next two years. Motley is 2nd string this year, Lawson redshirts, and then Lawson is the back up next year. He then has two years of the Fuente offense under his belt, and two years that he could be our starter. Lawson has plenty of time to learn, develop, prove himself, and be one of the great Virginia Tech QB's. Maybe he will, maybe he won't, but it's not now or never - the kid has time.

I think I recall Bud implying that having such a young secondary, and shuffling so many players back there, limited what Bud could call more than anything else last year. Calling zone blitzes not only means rotating coverages and changing assignments based on formations, but also having the experience to know when to call it off based on shifts the offense is making.

Like punt return TD's, Blocks, Excellent coverage tackles? Beamerball has fallen off because we haven't been blocking as many punts/kicks or had as many return TD's (or covered opposing returns) as we used to, not because we are averaging 4 YPR instead of 8.

We've certainly hit a wall here, but I hope people read this and realize how ridiculous it is to be so upset over Stroman, an otherwise reliable return man who doesn't make mistakes and has the ability to score, running backwards a few times.

I do kinda feel bad for him that this has gotten as big as it has. Apparently he had just done poorly on a test and was trying to laugh it off. It's a good lesson in watching what you say/post at all times though, even as some random 3rd string QB.

I agree it's not the end of the world to sleep in and your character shouldn't be questioned because of it. However, if you are competing for the starting spot on a division one football team against three or four other great talents, you've got to set yourself apart. The competition at this level is so good you have to be great at everything. That includes doing your homework when it comes to film, staying after practice and working with your WO, be special in the weight room, working on your technique, making it to practice on time. If everyone could do all of those things then everyone would be starters. However that's not the case and that's how you begin to form a depth chart. When someone slips up. When someone throws two too many inaccurate passes. When someone doesn't run a route correctly one too many times. When someone sleeps in one too many times. The cream rises to the top.

I don't have to provide anything for you or anyone else in regards to an opinion, which has more factual statistics to back it up then anything you can make up...

Never did I claim it was "detrimental" to the team either, but keep grasping at straws. It's not "helping" the team, but I've never claimed it's detrimental either. It's about equivalent to fair catching the ball every time. I haven't posted about stroman prior to this thread in ages and hope the kid turns out to be a superstar, but he wasn't one last year outside of the Tulsa game.

If you want to know the significance of having superior special teams refer back to the previous decade of hokie football, or have you forgotten beamer ball already?

You can afford to let your corners aggressively jump routes with a lead or a reliable offense

Not only that, but you can blitz more aggressively, as well as other things. Having a good offense lets the defense play more aggressively overall, and lets the DC be more creative with his schemes. We'll be seeing a lot more opposing coaches look like this

once Bud starts dialing up calls he couldn't have in the past because he has an offense that can score points reliably.

I can't think of many things scarier for an opposing OC than knowing Bud Foster gets to tinker with even more ways to make your life miserable.
