I agree that schools usually block players from transferring to conferencemates or future opponents (that's how we got Brewer, because TTU wouldn't let him transfer anywhere in Texas or the BigXII, if I remember correctly). I think Motley could be a special case. He's been a great asset to the program, is very well liked, and has (I believe) graduated. If he wants to transfer because he got passed by 2 younger guys on the depth chart, rather than simple dissatisfaction with the program or coaches, it would be a good PR move for VT to allow the transfer and wish him well in his future endeavors. (excluding the first Saturday in November, of course.)

We should have offered his family a cord of firewood. Maybe things would have been different...

I agree with this. VT needs more than just wins. But I think the first thing VT needs to do is win games. Winning will make Whit's job of doing those other things much easier. Winning games can be done in less time too. It's a whole lot easier to sell an attractive product than a stagnant has-been.

I think Whit made a very calculated decision to hire someone offensive minded. He knows that fans want to see lots of points and fireworks. The short term goal here is to get VT scoring lots of points and winning exciting games. That will make the longer term goal of selling the product of VT football extremely less difficult.

Win games first. That is the most important variable that can be changed (relatively) quickly. Leverage those wins improve those other components.

The grad transfer rule is what I was wondering about. I had heard about the 2-year rule for underclassmen transfers, but wasn't sure if it applied for graduates as well. I was speculating that the Duke option might be interesting to him because I think it presents a very good chance to play this year.

He wouldn't even have the option. You have 5 years to play 4 (once you sign/enroll). You can apply for a medical hardship and be granted a 6th year of eligibility.

The grad transfer rule allows you to play without sitting out. Not sure if the transfer rules (i.e. school or conference blocking applies), since you would have graduated.

I must agree, it is concerning that two talented swimmers transferred from our program. Both seem to be having success, which can say whatever you want about their development at Virginia Tech. And what Braden Holloway has done at NC State is noting short of amazing, more so if you know about the sport of college swimming. Their rapid rise is unprecedented. (BTW, he coached the distance group at VT and does not coach sprinters at NC State, Todd Desorbo coaches sprinters there.)

Without a doubt, if you invest more money, you may see better results in the pool. Perusing through Hokiesports, I made these observations.

1. Both men and women finished top-3 at ACCs last season, the only team to place both squads top 3.
2. Two men won individual ACC titles last season, among multiple All-American performances for both men and women.
3. Both teams hold a GPA above 3.0
4. A current swimmer, Brandon Fiala, was selected as one of 15 representatives for all NCAA student-athletes (an amazing accomplishment that all Hokie fans should know about) (http://www.hokiesports.com/swimming/recaps/20160129aaa.html)

Just a few notes, but may be some of the reasons that Whit isn't making changes. Success in competition and in other facets seem to matter to Whit, and the program seems to have a healthy balance. In the world of Olympic sports, you'd be hard-pressed to find an AD who will fire a coach that has been there for over 15 years, has brought them from the basement to consistent national rankings, and whose team gets in done in the classroom and many other areas.

As I recently learned, intra-ACC transfers require the player to sit for 2 years. Motley is a r-Sr. I doubt he wants to spend 7 years in college just for a chance to play. He could possibly make use of the grad transfer rule, but does he really want to hang around college into year 6 just for, again, a chance to play ball?

Did anyone else notice when Fuente said Ford was "recovering"? Not sure if this is in relation to him playing too many snaps last year or some sort of off season surgery.... #sauces anyone?

EDIT - FYI at 14min mark

Shoot, I have a game helmet decaled by Lester himself with the gold metal flake, ACC and is autographed with Tech NFL past and SOON to be NFL players such as D Hall, Kevin Jones etc etc I am thinking about selling but not sure the best place to do so? Any ideas. It is the all maroon with the VT logos on each side and all other appropriate decals such as ACC on front face mask, and Hokies on rear bumper etc.

Program perception is what attracts recruits at every level. Winning long term (as in generations of mostly winning) is a compenent of program perception. As does financial resources, the breadth and depth of local/regional fan/alumni/business, and national media presence.

Boise State has won more over the last 15-20 yrs than almost every Pac-12 program that it competes against for recruits, but it lacks the other three - and thus doesn't out recruit them.

VT has won more games than a handful or so of schools over the last 20 years, but it is much further down the list on the other 3. In order to move up the ladder, VT needs to continue to win, but it also needs much more than that.

most of the time you can block some transfers and it's almost always the case that schools block the player from going to schools they'll be playing in the near future, especially one in its own division

I asked this in another thread, but I'll put it here too, where it's probably more relevant.
If Motley falls behind Evans and Lawson on the depth chart this spring would he consider a transfer to Duke? Does the ACC even allow transfers between conference schools without a mandatory sit-out period? Assuming ACC rules permit it and it would require VT approval, would coach Fu sign off on such a transfer?

If Evans and Lawson both pass Motley in the spring, do you think Motley transfers? Do ACC rules prevent him from transferring to another conference member, like Duke, who just lost Sirk to an achilles injury? If the ACC will allow it, does VT need to approve it, and would they?

It seems likely that this'll help VT. (although, hopefully, we don't need help against Dook). I don't know what their backup situation is, but I know they don't have anyone behind him on the depth chart with meaningful collegiate game experience. We play them the first week of November, or about 9 months from now. That seems like the the most optimistic timetable for his return to action. It could all be a moot point if the next man up ends up being a good QB. He'll have 2/3 of a season under his belt by then and should settled in by then.

Another aspect to consider is whether or not they can lure in a transfer QB. If you're going to suffer a potentially season-ending injury to your QB in the offseason, this is probably the best time (or least bad time) for it to happen. There's time to try and recruit a transfer. I have to assume that Cutcliffe and his crew are working the phones pretty hard right now trying to find a FCS or graduate transfer eligible QB who could be there by summer.

Isn't Lawson about the same age as Evans? They might not be as far apart as some might think. I would guess poise under pressure might favor Evans because of experience.
