Easy everyone, i get what both sides are trying to say. Team sports where the team scores have their own indiviudal rigor and merit. We're not trying to knock or dispute that.

At the same time Wrestlers are very fond of the phrase "you can 'play' wrestling". Just part of the culture. And the difference being highlighted is that individuals score points for the team as opposed to the entire team scoring points.

No need to fight, we can all get along

In fact, I wouldn't be shocked if he sees this opening as an opportunity for a fresh set of eyes.

Isn't that one of the reasons Galen Scott was brought in?

Yeah I know... the stench of that. But, this reminds me a little of '95 when UNC threw Coach Cav (known at the time as a great recruiter) to the gutter, Frank picked him up and the next decade was pretty darn good.

Part of it may be that, as a fan since '68 who has attended a lot of games, held season tickets for years, the whole shebang, I got to experience the transformation personally. Tech literally went from rags to riches, and I was fully along for the ride. We yelled like we were playing the game and took personal pride in the intimidation that Lane became. My friends and I were an extremely happy fan base. Yeah, we griped about Stiney and later, Weaver, and everybody wants to go undefeated and win it all, but we were happy with what we had. Satisfied? Maybe not completely, but we were proud of our team, our school, and didn't hesitate to preach Hokie whenever given the chance. We had swagger, dammitall, and we need to get that back. Still love the Hokies, still proud of all things VT, but not so happy anymore. Hopefully, we're going to get back on that "we may not beat you, but you'll know you've been in a fight" track.

yeah I was thinking the same thing, but they are way more lenient on the HWTs since there usually isn't a ton of offense that goes on in their bouts. That's one reason it makes it so hard when it goes to overtime as the first wrestler is at a huge advantage as its hard to keep them down for 30 seconds.

This is an interesting take on both of these situations. I believe that his stance will change now that he's at UVA since like it was mentioned up above that most of his players will be much younger than he had at BYU and some will need a year to just get physically ready for college competition.

odds are it's someone like a Stacey Searels

That's just silly. Why would he come back, and why on earth do you think he could coach DB's?

/s

Turned Anthony Harris into an All-American defensive back, recruiting is obviously stellar and a 1st and 2nd round draft pick on his resume (with Quin Blanding on track to become one).

But he coached at UVa.

Meh.

Also. Take note of the coaches who won those national championships?

There's 8 total. Saban Meyer Miles M.Brown Fisher Tressel Chizik P .Caroll

That's a pretty heavy class of coaches. I don't think it just takes elite talent. Talent certainly helps (Chiziks on that list because of Cam Newton)

It would be interesting to see with all this recruiting ranking matters bit, how many of the teams with success also have across the board 5 star once in a class unaminous evaluations from coaches?

Like, a class in the top 10 with a bunch of 4 star kids vs a team in the top 20 with onenor two kids that are lights out elite, like a Tyrod Taylor or Vick for us. Cam Newton. etc. And if that position at Quarterback has more relevance than other positions?

Ex. Does this class top kid Gary who everyone's in consensus is elite have the same impact Desaun Watson has had?

You got it right. Championship or bust mentalities make for miserable fanbases. Lane was the Lane of old when the fan base was actually satisfied with results on the field.

Am I the only one who was really proud of our 10 win seasons? People were griping even then, and calling for Frank's departure the whole time. Our place outside of the perceived elite programs will probably always hinder us from top ten recruiting classes, but with good coaching and tough kids, we can at least get back to being a tough out for about anyone, and a team that NOBODY wants to play. We caught lightning in a bottle in '99, and sure, we might do it again, but there is waaaay too much room for pride and enjoyment without playing for the NC, and I'd like to get that feeling back.

i still have my doubts they can finish top 4, but what they have done has been very impressive. Vardy and Mahrez have been amazing this year.

EDIT: Preparing a delicious dish of crow for May at this point. They are playing out of their minds right now.

Great perspective! Hope to see improvement in 2017 but honestly don't think you can judge recruiting until 2018 or so. Couple years of on the field product and getting established in 757, NoVa and elsewhere and then we can evaluate fairly. We will never be top 10 in recruiting but just need to keep doing what we are doing, expanding our footprint but start keeping some of the big name in state kids home again.

There is a tier in the middle, that's where we were 10 years ago. My expectations are the same as Whit's, compete for the division title. Then you can win the ACC and then you will most likely make the playoff.

That's neither a "second tier ACC" mindset not a "win a national championship" mindset.
