DB coach, great recruiter... Score...

In February 2014 Rivals.com and Scout.com each named West its ACC Recruiter of the Year. West spearheaded a recruiting effort that landed UVA numerous top-rated recruits, including two of the nation's top-10 recruits. West was named the Atlantic Coast Conference's recruiter of the year for 2011 by 247Sports and was one eight finalists for the organization's national recruiter of the year honor.

Interesting, indeed. I'm not of the opinion that recruiting trumps coaching ability, but the top programs consistently value recruiting experience as significant. If you're losing one of your best in Gray, I would think that would be a consideration. Hopefully Bud is involved with the process to assess fit/ability as French suggested.

a guy who can be dangerous in his jet sweep series and run the bubble and jailbreak screens that we have not seen here recently. He was looking for "that guy." Velus Jones or Nate Johnson would have been getting work day 1 in that role

Spot on- was really disappointed we could not get one of those guys. Maybe Denmark can fill the void given his speed

A lot going on here. You won't hear much of an argument from me about the overall rotation, though it gets overblown somewhat. But what you have to keep in mind is that the sum total of McMillian's experience at RB was basically a year on the scout team. He still just didn't have the skills to do everything he needed to. But the Stroman point you bring up largely makes my point for me. Bringing in one player, to do one thing, usually spells doom. Stroman broke a couple of decent runs, but was largely bottled up because when the opponent saw him, there was no mystery. After a game or two of only ever running with McMillian, it would have been the same thing.

That's not a knock on the kid; he developed into an outstanding RB by year's end. But everything we heard was simply that he was still learning on the job. He picked it up by mid-way and never looked back. But to think that he simply should have been playing more based on raw talent at one task is just hindsight bias and assumption.

On a somewhat related note, Paul Myerberg on the Football Four podcast yesterday went to far as to say top 10 recruiting classes are essentially required for winning a NC. The definitive nature of the statement rubbed me the wrong way, so it got me to thinking what Rivals rankings have looked like for the loser in the NC. Spent my productive day pulling the information together for this. Nothing conclusive, but certainly interesting.

All stats are per Rivals. Their website isn't great for analysis, so if anyone wants the back up Excel for 2002-2015 rankings for all top 100 teams each year let me know.

Like Stroman on the jet sweep? I see your point on what the coaches said but you have to admit there is an advantage to having someone who can move the chains in the game when we were rotating backs every SINGLE play! That is not hyperbole. (Ok maybe a little) I physically witnessed it on multiple series in the first 3 games. We over complicated the running game when we had the talent to do better than we did. That's all I am saying. IMO, if the scheme is too complicated to run the ball with the best talent, then simplify it!

AND why can not Foster come up with a scheme to slow down running QBs. That has been a PIA for the last 4 years at least. AND how many games have we lost in the last few minutes over the past 4 years due to going into a "prevent" defense? Answer: a lot!

Of the 500 players ranked in the Rivals100 for the classes of 2007 through 2011, 73 (14.6 percent) decomitted at some point during their recruitment. Of those, 62 (12.4 percent) ultimately signed with a school other than the one to which they originally committed.

I have a feeling that number is higher for recent classes but that's just based on anecdotal evidence.

I disagree with the premise. I would argue that the need for traditional X's was filled with the current commits. All are bigger guys, and all (except for Deablo who can do some damage on jet sweeps) are going to be pass catchers and blockers on screens.

There is a huge void in the traditional slot, jitterbug, Ryan Switzer role- a guy who can be dangerous in his jet sweep series and run the bubble and jailbreak screens that we have not seen here recently. He was looking for "that guy." Velus Jones or Nate Johnson would have been getting work day 1 in that role. Right now, it is Deablo and a bunch of nothing unless Stroman moved back or Deon Newsome can actually produce something.

Having taken that class, he definitely shouldn't have stressed the paper. I'm pretty sure they weren't even read because I got a 100, and wrote it the night before it was due, while drunk on Jameson and having a mini-stroke.
