I was initially disappointed in Fuente, as I figured he knew and kept it hush until after signing day, but if so why would they put THIS out??? Makes me think Fuente was as blindsided as the rest of us.

My opinion: whoever is hired will be a pretty clear indicator on Fuente's opinion about Bud Foster. If the hire is someone who is familiar with Bud's coverage system and has the experience to teach it, then Fuente believes that Bud can pull the defense out of the tailspin we saw last season. If Fuente brings in an outside guy or another coach with ties to his own coaching tenure, to me that is a red flag that they don't have full confidence that Bud can adapt his system to turn things around.

And that will look EVEN WORSE. We set up the initial decision at these salaries that started the dynamic that pushes one of the best DB coaches in the nation out and then get a replacement DB coach at a higher base salary than the other equivalent assistants on the staff? That would make the optics even worse. Then on the face it appears that Fuente forced him out and the WTF dynamic in the staff from a press and public perception is way worse. You'll have the media sharks circling asking the wrong questions. Again, Not Good, Bob.
$260k is the standard for this hire.

We don't know how long VT has known about TG leaving. Maybe Chip West hasn't been picked up because a deal is already done for him to come over to the good guys......

Fuente made a statement with bringing Galen Scott over and inserting him into the Defensive Staff. My guess is this decision will be dominated by Coach Fuente. The list of available/approachable candidates that would accept $260k will tilt the decision and could result in a VT grad/linked DB coach. BUT, I doubt that is his primary direction.
He is going to establish that this is HIS staff and he makes the dominant staff decisions. Bud will be consulted and included in the process, but he will not be the primary decider.
I bet Fuente and Babcock have had this discussion already and Whit will largely support it.
My guess is that we go in another direction. Look Westward for candidates, fellow TKPers.

Would he cost a lot? Isn't he still being paid by Miami not to coach there? Could be a bargain.

I don't think you'd have to make him associate head coach, either. Someone already has that title. Bud and (I beileve) Galen Scott have already been named associate head coach and assistant coach, although I can't remember which one got which title.

Just say no to D-Lo. Loved the guy as a player, but he did not strike me as the kind of person you want as a coach. Very me-first. Plus he's been with the Redskins so long, I don't think it'd be possible to scrub the stench of failure (the team's failure, not his personal failure) off him.

you're missing the point. Where do you think we should get the extra money? HokieClub? Fine, but winning drives donations to that too.

My favorite memory of TG will be when he tracked down Tiki Barber on the first play from scrimmage in 1996. Set the tone for a 21-9 VT win (maybe it was 26-9?). I believe Tiki set the all-time ACC rushing record with that carry, but when he was tracked down by Gray (and horse collared), it was clear that their best wasn't good enough that day.

The optics,... the optics of the timing of the TG announcement relative to these statements:

"My big deal is trying to avoid big surprises.

I think high school coaches across the state appreciate the way we handled our business through this signing period.

I'm not a fan of this side of college recruiting. I agree with some of the statements we have all made about that this is what happens in big time NCAA football, but this sure adds some patina to the "family flavor" reputation of VT. Remember these are 17 year old kids we are talking about. Statements are made all over these boards that you have to play to their vanity during recruiting ... and then our staff does this.
Not Good, Bob!

So how many 5 star recruits are on UVA? 2? How many times have they been bowling?

How did that 5 star safety do against our 3 star TE?

I'm speaking not about who we ended up with, but who we missed on.

I love who we have coming in. I also think that there were higher targets over the past several years that we whiffed on.

Evans is a critical recruit. If he does what we think he can do, he's a 3+ win player.

WR's add critical skill to that group. We could see all four of them play.

OL look like projects, as 3* OL usually do. But luckily we don't seem to need them in 2016. So store those OL on the shelf and hopefully one or two of them become something down the road.
