Hopefully Fuente sees this like French said it above so succinctly. Under the circumstances VT is in, I'm not 100% sold he sees that or that is his #1 priority - but it should be. The decision will tell us a lot.

I hear you. But its not real hard for media guys to think that way. If journalists are worth their salary, they already think in a speculative sort of way to dig out stories - its in their DNA.

With Bud's defense demanding numbers in the box (hence forcing high risk coverage), I don't think Bud can run his defense without an excellent teacher of DB technique that funnels WRs to places of strength for the defense. It is a tricky balance. If an excellent recruiter can also do that, all the better.

Imagine Paul Johnson hiring Trooper Taylor to be his QB coach. Trooper Taylor (I realize I am dating myself here but he is the first name that popped in my head.) Taylor is a great recruiter (even if a bit unscrupulous.) However, Johnson's offense requires such a unique nuance in terms of fundamentals that it wouldn't work no matter how good a recruiter he is.

I don't know what direction this will go. I do know that if the primary focus is finding "an ace recruiter here in Virginia," then we are being short sighted.

Yeah, I see your point, but we're kind of in a bad spot and may not have much option other than to open the pocketbooks a little bit. It would definitely have to be fully discussed by the coaches on staff to set them at ease with it, and it might look bad on its face, but I think it could be done right if it had to be. I think the most critical people of such a move would be the same ones who rant about the "pay cuts," largely on message boards vice traditional media. In that sense, it's only as big an issue as we make it out to be.

See French's comment immediately below. I agree with him. I think my sentiments are not that different.
I also hope not, but when a new sheriff is in town - or in any organization - the org chart is his and not his #1 assistant...

Quick story on Loren Johnson:

Stonewall Jackson (near where I grew up) hosted camps for middle/high school kids and he was the head coach there. They had two camps: one for lineman, one for skill players. Well, I accidentally signed up for the skill player one. I informed him of the mistake and he said I could a refund, but my parents were already gone so I went ahead and went through the day. I must say that a linemen running and doing drills with exclusively skill players is a funny sight. I was miserable, obviously. At the end of a group chat he pulled me aside and said: "I see you have some great hands but you have some of the slowest feet I have ever seen. I see you're working hard, keep it up" He said it in a joking and light hearted manner and got a laugh out of both us. He made that day not only bearable but fun. I really hope he gets the gig. There might be better DB coaches, but it will be hard to find a better person.

I am upset (as I'm sure most Hokies are) that TG has departed, but we will find a good replacement. I am more torn up about when he left. I understand the state of college football, but I was proud to say that my university was not part of this type of BS. To leave some DBs high and dry right after NSD just feels so wrong to me. That is what has me pretty angry. I would rather have had our program be honest and lose the recruits than the current situation we are in now.

I'm still kind of bitter haha, that was my freshman year at Clemson, and I went to both of those games and the 2012 game. Most of my friends are Clemson fans sooo. Extra bitter after the ACCCG where we were trending up and top 5 and they had lost 3 out of their last 4 or something and limped into the ACCCG by making a double digit comeback against Wake Forest and then made us look like trash.

Agreed. Given all the information I have I don't believe the Staff could have done anything about this. Fuente said today that they were still talking with Gray and the deal wasn't done with Florida. I really think that they may have known it was possible but what exactly were they supposed to do. Hello potential recruit, there is a possibility our DB coach is leaving but we really have no idea and he is making up his mind. This is on Gray not the staff. And that's assuming he even told the staff anything before the news came out.

Excellent Quote here from an interview with Dwight Vick a couple years ago:

Q: You are part of the Virginia Tech great defensive back legacy. Who do you credit for helping you become a great defensive back? A: "Of course I grew up a huge fan of Deion Sanders. I remember when I was playing with Torrian Gray; he was a senior and I was a sophomore. He told me if you run a 4.3 you can definitely do 4.3 things but if you don't run a 4.3 you have to be smarter than the average person you are competing against. I tried to learn as much as I could and use my knowledge every time I stepped on the field."

He could be sort of a 'TGray 2.0' since he was a so-to-speak protege of TGray's in college.

Carter was HEAVILY recruited by the service academies. Those type of guys are smart and have instinctual get after it tendencies. The academies go after these guys to primarily defend our country and have the ability to kick ass under extreme conditions (both physical and mental) that require a certain mental capability that most of us do not have - oh and they can play football also - sweet! These kind of guys bring an entirely new dynamic to the team - and all good teams need that.
JUCO QB Evans comes from a similar mold.
My guess, these guys will surprise us.

His best coaching performance was 2010. An average performance by the defensive backfield, and the Hokies would have been .500 in the ACC. That was the worst defensive front 7 I can remember, even after this season, during the Beamer era. Gray's DBs had so many critical INTs to change momentum that season.

I was initially disappointed in Fuente, as I figured he knew and kept it hush until after signing day, but if so why would they put THIS out??? Makes me think Fuente was as blindsided as the rest of us.
