Well then, let's just leave it at this: I think you're wrong, and I think the smart fans are the ones who realize, rules are rules. The agreement in place has protections that guarantee you can only fall so far in the selections based on your final record. It doesn't matter if your coach is retiring, or if your dog died, or if you really, really wanna go to a different bowl game, gosh darn it. If you want a better bowl game, you win enough games to get you to that better bowl game. If Pitt wants an elite bowl, they better win 10-11 games, because they have no curb appeal to the bowl selection committees. If we want a second-tier bowl, we better damn well finish with a second-tier record.
In the scenario you propose, FSU or Clemson would always be the second bowl selection, regardless of record.

Coach Wolfe was always one of those guys that put value in looking outside the United States, so one of the places he typically goes to recruit is the FIBA U-19 World Championships each year. That's where he picked up Panoussis in 2013. It didnt hurt that Hannah Young from Australia was a former teammate of Panoussis as well and already in the program when Wolfe took over. FIBA Championships is also where he came across Taijah Campbell and Samantha Hill from Canada, as well as Regan Magarity from Sweden.

This times a billion and more. One of the most important lessons I ever learned from a coach was in a scenario where I deserved a good yellin'. I definitely learned my lesson. The next time that situation arose, I did the right thing, and the coach praised the bejeezus out of me.
I learned that day a lesson that I've never, ever forgotten: If you're in a leadership position and you have to smack someone down, then be damn sure that you build them back up again. You can't run around being punitive to people all the time. Although sometimes it is necessary, you always have to be able to show them support when they follow your lead after you pummel them.

Kendall Fuller, Isaiah Ford and Cam Phillips were very well-regarded recruits with multiple offers.
People can argue about the accuracy of the recruiting ratings, and some players don't work out, but the fact is that recruiting does matter, and getting better players (however you assess that) is reflected in the results on the field.

I think they burned it because they didn't think Motley was going to play as good as they anticipated. Did he play great? No, but he had his moment, and overall I think they coaches thought he played above expectations.

You will never remove an aspect of a sport that encourages engagement. Irate fans are engaged fans. Engaged fans stay interested. The networks rely on this. That's why ESPN's format is so dependent on scripted conflict. Polarizing opinions, like those coming from the rankings, make college football more profitable.
The upside right now is that he's a much better recruiter than Cornell. I love Cornell and I think he'll get a chance to build his coaching resume somewhere else (probably at a lower level) but he just didn't produce in the area he was brought in to produce in.

For me, it was the repeated jet sweep handoffs from the shotgun AND the insistence from Shane to attempt to get Coleman & Edmunds into a rhythm (which, unfortunately, they did not). I felt by the 3rd/4th game we needed to ride the hot hand (McMillan) the rest of the way.
