A game-changer is a 5* kid, immediate impact and top talent. A contributor is a 3* kid, expected to populate the 2-deep and play a role. We whiffed big-time at the contributor level for a while, hence a cobbled-together offense, O-line, etc.
Can't argue with your point. Context does enter into it. For the finely tuned athlete, I would think there were few if any "minor" injuries.

Most if not all bowls get their money from television contracts.
"Like to go" and "able to go" are two very different things. Most Hokie fans don't want to go/can't go to Shreveport because of the expenses & time involved. A bowl game in the Bahamas would be a similar story.

If those classes each get 3 or 4 more contributors, VT is likely still the program to beat in the Coastal division.
These two points contradict each other. The second statement is basically what the article is arguing. Elite players do make a difference. They're not the only factor, but they are a factor. You can be a pretty good team with good coaching, but if you want a championship team, you're going to need the best coaching AND the best players.
Whiffing on 3-4 really good players does make a difference, unless you can find 3-4 other good players to replace them with. It's going to be difficult to win the ACC Coastal if the other teams in the ACC Coastal are consistently out-recruiting you.
The entire concept of the NFL draft, and all those millions paid to the best players (even if some of them don't pan out) means that there are a lot of people think that a few really good players can make a difference in results.
The only reason I have any hope for Bristol is because I saw how Tennessee played against North Texas. Even though the score ended up being 24-0, Tennessee did not look good at all. A team that is 1-11 played them really well and Tennessee looked really bad. Tennessee only scored 17 points through the first three quarters against a team that had been allowing 45.6 points per game. Hopefully the coaches can come up with a good game plan for that game and either our defense shows up strong or their offense come out looking that bad again.
Ugh, I don't think Bristol can handle the ego of Tennessee fans if they beat NW and end up in the top-15 next year.

Vandy was in October this year but I always though they played later than that. But yeah, USCe and Mizzou flopped over so UT finished with 5 straight wins after they lost to Bama. Can't forget the decisive victory over North Texas in November.
What's this consistency and execution you speak of? I'm not an Xs and Os guy and I wasn't sure how much the offense would gain from extra practice other than fundamentals.
To be fair, I'm guessing UVa feels the same way about VT.
To be fair and truthful, nobody GAF how they feel. World just keeps on spinning. In fact, it makes me VERY happy and releived that they're all butthurt about it. They should be thankful they even have (what is labeled) a "football program".

Yes, the 2015 defense wasn't as good as we are accustomed to nor did it live up to preseason hype. But it's not like it's a shit show. Fuente can focus on offense and recruiting and trust Bud to do what's necessary on defense. Fuente shouldn't have to place much of a focus at all on defense.
Yeah, they always frontload their schedule so it's easy for them to finish strong. I think UK and Vandy are always late in the year. They were 4-4 at one point and won their last 4 in rather convincing fashion I believe.

Your condescending tone aside, you've not really replied to my point. What would your reaction be if an 8 or 9 win VT got passed over for a 6 win FSU? I'd imagine you would be far less concerned about the circumstances that led to that selection.

The MAJOR difference between Bobby Bowden and Frank Beamer in these scenarios is that Frank has too much class to try to influence anyone into putting VT in a specific bowl for his own needs. Sure, Frank might talk to Whit and say "Man, it sure would be great to play my last bowl game close to home in Charlotte/Belk Bowl!", but he would never say "Whit, let's you and I pull every string we can to make the Belk Bowl happen despite our .500 record. I don't want to play anywhere else."
Frank is humble and simply happy that the bowl streak didn't end under his tenure and that he'll have one final chance to coach the team he loves for the fans he loves.
