I gotta disagree about Shane helping "closing the deal" with recruits in Richmond. He was in charge of Richmond, which is 2nd to Hampton roads area for population. Last 4-5 years Richmond kids have been leaving the state in high numbers. Again I dont need someone to list the handful of richmond kids he's pulled because its such a large city it's expected that Virginia Tech gets one every once in awhile. I think Shane got comfortable becuase his pop was running the show and VT was such a consistent school in football. I think I speak for most Hokies when I say Im pumped to possibly have an offense that is on Par with our traditionaly strong defense.

UNC is 9-1 from a playoff committee point of view. Multiple teams have more wins than them and the same # of losses.
(FCS opponents/wins don't count.)
Oh yeah, lower ranked guys can be awesome for sure.
How is it likely that UNC beats Clemson? They've skated through an easy/moderate schedule. Clemson is the #1 team in the country. If our defense can shut UNC down, so can Clemson's.

With great blocking to help Brewer's accuracy and then Hodges seemingly coming from out of nowhere to give Malleck some extra running room. Ford and Rogers, of course, were stellar but that play was a shining moment.
I think Spurrier was more explaining/justifying why he did it the way he did it, not trying to complain about the way Beamer did it.
It may be just as remarkable that they actually sent telegrams back then.

He would have been drafted as a quarterback in the NFL. Wait...
I might be alone here but I think it will be really weird without Shane...

I think we all appreciate the impact Beamer had on VT, but I think what you're referencing is indicative of the impact he had on college football as a whole. People sat up and took note of what our special teams were doing in the '90s and as more coaches began to emulate Beamer, a corresponding change to protecting the kickers came to pass. This is why people who don't give 2 craps about VT still consider Beamer a legend.
You heard over and over again, Seniors wanting to make it special for Beamer for all that had played before them.
The longevity in this program is a reflection of every game is played for the program, not the class and not the individual.

"Back" into relevance?
In its history USCe has six seasons during which it won 9 games or more, and four of them came under Spurrier.
Spurrier's point is reasonable about the farewell tour. I think a big difference was how it was handled in Blacksburg by the entire program from Whit on down. It would be difficult to imagine any better way to choreograph CFB's departure than what actually occurred. This is a testament to this program that has been built, in that all the right decisions were made based on a thoughtful approach of doing things the right way. There aren't many programs across the country, certainly not USCe in this case, where you would even be able to hope for this kind of departure. This speaks to the organizational culture that has been cultivated here over the years and it is exactly the reason CJF decided/wanted to take this job. Well done Hokies!!!
I doubt their defense does better than ours against UNC barring a complete team-wide UNC meltdown. Clemson's defense is a paper tiger. Numbers look good against horrible, horrible offesnes with no identity. They looked straight up BAD against Syracuse (almost not talent, played them with a 5th string QB) and South Carolina who is also garbage. If UNC doesn't meltdown on the big stage, there is no reason to think they won't score on Clemson, who also got into a shootout with NC State, who we held to 13(?).
