Have to agree here. The defense used to be Championship caliber but it is not anymore. Unfortunately, we are so weak at some key areas (our LB situation is a mess and its not getting better anytime soon) that we probably aren't going to see a noticeable improvement for a few years. I know Bud has been able to rebuild before, but the declining recruiting and the numerous misses in recent years could mean this would be his toughest yet.
I second the People's Pub. Owner (manager?) is an alumn and there will mostly be a Hokie presence watching.
Perhaps a bit too defensive from the Bud supporters, given that these are discussions and not attacks. I really don't think there was any intent to attack Bud. That being said, I disagree with you when you imply that our defense is championship caliber. Without specifying what you mean by "championship" I have to assume you mean national championship because that's the only one that actually, really matters. Our defense is not anywhere near that quality at the moment.
I would agree that Bud has put together such a defense on more than one occasion. However, you seem to be implying that losing Bud guarantees that our current defense will lose its championship ability. I don't think that's a quality it's capable of losing, because it isn't a quality it currently possesses.
UVA plays VT at home every other year just so they can sell some tickets every 2 years.
With the latest Tweeter rumors being Fuente or Herman, looking at those charts, I think we'll be good either way.

Dating back to 2014, VT is 1-0 against UVa on November 28th. Tech has to win.
He's their DC though so I doubt he would take a demotion to CB coach elsewhere. He could maybe come here as our new DC under the next coach.
The intent of my post was to show how the title of the thread automatically put Bud fans on the defensive and was essentially an attack, however inadvertently, in naming those that think Bud could handle the VT HC position well, as illogical and mentally pathologically challenged.
It starts the whole thread as aggressive. Should have been named differently if it wasn't intended on pissing off Bud supporters.

At any rate the new DC would have to be willing (and have the ability) to continue with some of the current scheme while phasing his in over time, if he wants immediate success with the current personnel.
(unless it's basic enough to pick up but different enough to throw off the opponents for a few games until it really gels. edit: and it would help if we could Tom Herman ourselves into a top-ten offense in year one)

Considering how 4 years ago we were hiring a guy who had just gotten fired for performance reasons (Loeffler), the fact we are shopping for the best available now is fantastic.
I have zero complaints with either hire. Near equal chances of overwhelming success vs. being a bust. It's not like we are shopping around for a Tommy Bowden type. Either guy would be a huge get.

Most of you seem to like him but carp about his recruiting. He is at Memphis, for God sake. Memphis is an armpit with some very good rib joints. No real football history in the middle of the SEC! I think he must be a great recruiter just to get the 2 and 3 star recruits that he does..,.then he wins with them!!! I think his personality is a great fit for VT. Come on Santa Whit, deliver the goods tomorrow or Monday. :-)

I also wonder a bit about a person's ability to 1) come in and work magic in year 1 vs 2) build and sustain a successful program. Since Herman only has a year of coaching experience, it's hard to judge him on it.

I'm on your side, here is some additional support.
Bud is in the highest tier of elite DC's because:
1) He makes in game adjustments that turn our defense looking like a dumpster fire in the first (or first few drives) into a totally shut down unit. We have seen this happen a million times and I constantly watch other top DC's fail to do this.
Ex) Venable's Clemson team was unprepared to stop the basic option and zone read concepts SYRACUSE implemented with their 5TH STRING QB, but what was most shocking that despite the continued failed alley, spill, and edge assignments he made no adjustments.
2) Bud gets his defense ready to stop the big boys consistently, and does it better than anyone else with innovative concepts and ideas.
ex1) shuts down Tom Herman led Buckeye offense on the road and makes a future record breaker at QB look like a scrub and has buckeye fans calling for Herman to be fired..
Ex2) Bud lines up against Alabama's smash mouth power run game and complete shuts it down in 2013. Nobody has disrupted the Bama backfield like that since Saban has been in Tuscaloosa.
There are more examples but 2013 is a great example of a championship caliber defense being ruined by a dumpster fire offense. In case you forgot, we held Duke to 180 yards of offense, forced 4 turnovers and didn't allow a 3rd down conversion in 2013 AND LOST. Two years prior we held Denard Robinson to his worst game as a QB, held Michigan to 180 yards of offense AND LOST (only technically though because Danny caught it)
ocean lakes had a a potentially game-typing PAT doink off the upright with ~2 mins to go. couldnt get the onside kick and lost. special teams are important, right? big win for Oscar Smith
I also know buckley's, located in belltown, is frequented on gamedays by Hokies (including myself) that live in downtown seattle. Glad you found a place though!
