Exactly.
How so? The "family", the football staff, if you will, is breaking up. Beamer's retiring, the staff will not likely be retained, why not leave? I'm sure Bud will always be back here, and he'll likely call Claytor Lake his "home", but its not bullshit if Frank retires and everyone gets their walking papers.
I would love to see Foster on the sidelines again, but he came close to leaving last year, he has always wanted a HC job. If Illinois offers and Tech doesn't, it's on Whit, not Bud.
Believe it or not, there are other coaches on the planet who have fielded competent to good defenses.
I believe that a 757 defensive lineman did the same thing 2 years ago.

Nice write-up, Brian. It sounds like things are starting to gel a little bit, but we'll definitely need everybody (looking at you, Seth Allen) contributing to even keep the Iowa State game close.
The ball-hawking secondary has picked off more passes this season (2, T-122nd) than Rice (2, 128th).
I'm no math expert but those look like the same number of INT's (2) yet they are ranked 6 apart?
Recruiting is important. I realize that. I also think that recruiting has less to do with the coach and more to do with the program with rare exceptions. I think Herman would have been the only real exception to that rule in this case. Dude can recruit. I think Richt and Smart benefited from being at UGA and Bama. Fuente may have been hurt by being at Memphis.
If Fuente is hired, I don't expect our recruiting to take a down turn. If anything, I imagine it will stay relatively the same with potentially a slight up-tick. I think an exciting offense will do more for recruiting at VT than much of anything. Fuente may not get a hot recruiting class right off the bat like I think Herman would but after a couple years of putting pretty good numbers up offensively the flood gates might start to open up a bit.

This would make me sad. I wish beyond all wishes that Bud would stay on as our DC with whoever the new coach ends up being, and at this point I'm (totally un)sure that it won't be Bud.
Having said that, it'll be a bittersweet departure if he does go. We have spent all this time saying goodbye to Frank, but haven't focused much at all on Foster. Sad times.
If so, I hate to hear that. He showed flashes of brilliance last year, looking like a man possessed in taking the ball to the hoop.

Agreed. What some people seem to be missing is that if you promote Bud based on his merits, it's a well thought out decision. If you promote Bud because you're afraid of losing him, it's not.
Concerned about recruiting........impressed with what he did at Memphis.....excited to have a QB guru running the team.
Not my favorite, but might be our best real opportunity. Herman may have just preferred the rebuild at USCe in the SEC. Richt may either not be leaving or he may retire if he's fired. Miles is pretty old and is still currently employed. Smart is just a tough fit at VT with Buds presence, but I think he's going to be a star. Those are the guys I prefer over Fuente.
Fuente is very similar in my mind to Mullen, but cheaper. Both may not be great recruiters but are great at player development. I like a lot about Morris, but Fuente nudges ahead of him since he has actually completed the miracle rebuild.
Isn't Outlaw already out for the year? As for Hudson, the only thing I can think is he might be not giving it all in practice and Buzz isn't about that. He wants 200% all the time, he might be trying to push Hudson out to bring in another one of "his guys" next year.
You and me think alike. I have (had) very high hopes that Whit would do the unthinkable and poach a huge name guy out of the SEC (Mullen or Richt). It's not that I don't necessarily like Fuente but he just isn't what I was expecting Whit to get and I honestly thought our school could do much better.
