I don't get your logic here. Yes, the way we turtled proves we are too thin at key skill positions, but that's basically what I said is all that's missing. The reason we immediately flipped strategies to "live to fight another day" is specifically because QB depth after Brewer is uncharted territory, and while the coaching staff thinks we can still have a successful ACC run with Brewer out, they thought it was impossible with Brewer AND Motley out.
That doesn't make us further away than I claimed. If anything, it proves my point. Depth is the issue, and the only issue, separating us from the upper echelon of P5 football. Get us two-deep at every position without monumental dropoff and we're there. That's a problem we can have fixed within three years, tops, if we commit as a program to doing it. We could be in the playoffs well before Lawson graduates without us having to bank on injury luck as a primary factor.
I wouldn't hold your breath on Brewer coming back, unfortunately. Just too much time between now and then, and it'll be even longer for him to get into game shape again, even if everything goes well.
But that's exactly what I don't want, a "serviceable" QB. We need someone who can actually go out there and make some plays. We've been mediocre the last few years because we haven't been good on offense. Yes our defense is good enough to keep us in every single game we play, but we can't expect our defense to score the points for us as well.

I think Beamer made a number of mistakes along the way. He thought Virginia would yield enough talent to be nationally competitive, he believed he could own Virginia recruiting, he allowed poor position coaches to stay on roster far, far too long, and he adhered to a seniority-based roster well past the point it had been proven an obsolete model. But the one thing I don't believe he has ever done, despite so much insistence to the contrary, is meddle in the affairs of his position coaches and coordinators. So I definitely don't believe that Frank can't win a national championship.
I think Frank now sees what he did wrong and has corrected. Case in point would be the hiring away of AMo. Very similar situation to when Kevin Rodgers got hired away by the Vikings when Childress got the head gig. Frank's response to that was to value loyalty over ability for about the next six years, because he bristled at the fact that someone would use VT as a stepping stone. But when the young, talented AMo got hired away by a sexier program, Frank's response was to just go out and get the best damn replacement he could find. He gets it now.
So basically, I think Frank is exactly the kind of coach that will go as far as his staff takes him. He lets his coaches coach and has minimal interference beyond saying what he wants VT football to be about in broad, sweeping terms. He lets his coaches figure out how to adhere to that vision on their own. So then the question becomes, do we have the right staff, and can we make up for lost time before Frank retires. The answer to the first question is yes, IMO. The answer to the second is maybe.
Blacksburg isn't exactly a big draw locaton wise on a national scene
I hear this a lot, and I just don't see it. Maybe 15 years ago this was the case, but it really isn't anymore. Distance from home and remoteness of campus is meaningless in the digital era. Kids want to play for a winner and it doesn't matter where they have to do for it. And they also want to play for coaches who have their teams consistently winning big games.
I'm pretty sure he could run that scheme and have it humming pretty good.
Heck, the Seahawks anchor their scheme with a Hokie.
In all seriousness, the fact remains that there is still a major issue with the sanctions system. OSU managed to build the best team we've seen in a long time while under two years of NCAA sanctions. Alabama and Oregon both retained their elite levels of talent while under sanctions. When it comes down to it, the reputation of your coach outweighs the NCAA penalties.
I don't know how you develop a system that efficiently penalizes these schools for cheating, but it feels like the current one doesn't do much.
Agree. Going out of state is needed and all, but the "next step" to recruiting has to be landing more top 10 VA players
I didn't say strike them from the record, I said eliminate them going forward. Identify what the breakdowns were that let them bust the big plays, fix that, and the defense should be on course for the rest of the season and could still be in the discussion for top 5 D in the country. I'm not cheapening anything anOSU did, but we're not likely to see many athletes like that grouped together again.

the difference in my mind from Boise st to now is that we were deflated by the loss that we had in our grasp against a team we should have beat and expected to, rather than deflated by losing as expected to a defending national champ as our qb1 gets injured. to me that's as apple to oranges as the two hokie teams that are playing in those respective years.

Since Loeffler is the QB coach, it's a fine line. If the scheme gets guys open, that's not on the OC. If the QB isn't getting the ball to the open receivers, that's on the QB coach. Even for a backup.
I'm as critical of Loeffler as anyone, but I would give about a 20% discount for a backup QB. I was expecting a top 50 offense this year, I would be okay with a top 60 offense now. If we revert back to top 80 or worse, that's not good QB coaching or OC'ing or both.
I think a "national power" in the playoff era means your goal is to win your conference every year with two or fewer total losses before the bowls (while scheduling good OOC games like we have been doing). I think that's a reasonable goal for VT without aiming too high or too low.

I finnaly re watched the game and..the pregame show was garbage and hearing herbie call the game was atrocious.. no idea how espn allows alum to call games for their school because its as 1 sided of broadcast as it can get.
