I wonder who the 2nd best defense we will play may be? Pitt under Narduzzi? NCSU (I'm not that familiar with them). Miami, the perennial underachiever on defense? Duke, the perennial overachiever? GT?
I don't see a lot of strong defenses on our schedule moving forward, that could play to our advantage.
I think motley has the potential to turn some heads if they just let him play his game, he isn't a drop back qb, he is more dangerous when you let him roll out and take off if nothing is there, his legs are a weapon and in that sense he is more of a weapon than brewer, teams will have to respect that. As far as his passing game, he can throw the ball I watched the kid all thru high school, he has a big time arm, he just needs confidence. I know both of his uncles donald wayne snell and Sidney snell, athletes run in his family, give the kid a chance I really believe he will be fine the more he gets reps and plays.
That was 100% NOT part of the play design. Rogers got bounced back the opposite direction. Brewer just ran up field and happened to be in the area of where Rogers was headed. I mean Brewer tried to put something on him, but a QB isn't going to lock up a defender on a block. But it was just interesting location. As far as Malleck, I think that's another "why didn't David Wang block that guy" kind of observation. Malleck had the guy who got shielded by the field judge, but then Bucky picked him up after they all got diverted and so he was left without a man to block on that side.
I hope this game was a wake-up call to our administration in just how far we are from being where we are telling our fans on where we want to be.
This here, I can't actually agree with you on.
We climbed out of a 14-point hole, scored 17 unanswered going into the half and were moving the ball on the play when our QB was lost for at least most of the season. We were right in the thick of dogfight with the defending national champions on a night where our defense was far from perfect. If anything, to me, the game up until the injury proved we are closer than anyone might realize. Based on what I saw against OSU, I could honestly have seen a Brewer-led VT making the playoffs this year, regardless of the outcome. We have the schemes, the coaching, and the first-string talent to be a playoff program. What we lack is the second and third strings.
It would be one thing if we were worlds away, if I'm correctly interpreting your response as claiming. But what's worse is, we are close. Infuriatingly close. So if we miss this opportunity, it'll make the bad decisions made in the previous decade all the more egregious.
Agree, although development of the passing game would be missed, if we only threw the ball 10x against Ferrum Furman and ran for 300+, I would be ecstatic.
Motley's pancake of von bell was pretty nice later in the game.
And if those 3 plays don't happen who is to say they don't have other big plays (20+ yards) on their way to scoring another TD. No way of knowing.
Do you count on QB blocks? I saw that too and thought that was a play that Brewer does on his own, not something I would expect the other less-experienced QB's to even get as close as Brewer was to be involved in.
Malleck, on the other hand, didn't have a guy to block (he kinda blocks the field judge).
Better than scout, but agreed ESPN is 3rd in the pecking order of rivals, 247 and scout.
But you can't eliminate those plays. We gave them up. Many of those big plays were a result of a defensive breakdown (outside of the redonkulous spin move by Braxton) so it really is cheapening the effort Ohio St made, and their ability to immediately recognize and capitalize on our defensive mistakes.

We still have an extremely easy schedule and he has an optimal stretch coming up to get a young/inexperienced QB ready for ACC play. Even ECU this year is way down in terms of talent and they have their own devastation at the QB spot.
Yup. Kendall, Vernon Hargreaves and jalen ramsey were all rated between 4-15 I think everywhere but espn. ESPN had kendall as a borderline 5 star from what I recall.
This may have been asked somewhere but there are a lot of threads going. Is Brewer eligible for a 6th year since he missed (or will have missed) the bulk of 2 seasons with injuries?
I think they lose week 3 to MSU.
AS I've said multiple times on here we don' t recruit well and if you want to win it all or against the Top programs you have to recruit.
Beamer has kept to recruiting to much in VA or Maryland and not the Top talent in the East Coast

I think by the time Tyrod got onto the field, LSU had put in their second string. Tyrod turned out to be amazing, but at the same time, wasn't he was also the backup to Sean Glennon?
I have little worry about Motley. He hasn't taken 1st team reps in a while. He'll do it this week, he'll get that chemistry with the OL/receivers, and over the course of a few weeks, he'll look like a serviceable starting QB.

I guess the way I look at it is that you have to look at the play-calling. If the play-calling is good, there were WRs open and the QB made the wrong read, proper execution of the run game and such, and the problem is that you have a QB who isn't executing their responsibilities, then you have to look at how much was because of Loeffler. I just think there will be no numerical way to look at this game. You can't say "if his offense is in the top 50" or drive efficiency, points scored, etc. It has to be looked at situationally which makes it much more difficult and will result in a very divided fanbase. Many will say that Motley should be good because he's been with Loeffler for 3 years, but I'm certain that I could spend 5 years with Loeffler and still not be good because I'm not cut out to be a QB. But after Motley, inexperience will create many errors.
I think a combination of exhaustion from being on the field to much, and playing across from a whole crew of NFL draft picks
Sure, we have Ford, Phillips, Hodges and Malleck, but that doesn't mean much if we can't get a QB to give them oppurtunities to make plays.
Also both lockdown cornerbacks were pretty poor last game.
Appreciate the writeup but I'm still deeply cut by the loss. I didn't expect a win even with Brewer in, but...god damnit. What if. Not like this.
