Running protect, once Brewer was out meant that we were recognizing that we could not win that one and protecting our opportunity to win the coastal.
Is there a chance? Sure. Going into every game there are 2 true outcomes, a 'W' and a 'L" ( I watched a lot of John Madden to prepare for that)

Will I watch the game and cheer VT. Yes.
Honestly, one guy I wouldn't mind keeping an eye on is Bob Stitt, the head coach of Montana. I really liked what I saw out of them against ND State, and he's a guy who has been tabbed as an up and coming coach for a while now.
I dont see how anyone made any noise as they were all too worried about video taping it with their phones.

^Agree... The stout D will keep us in games. We we can't rely on the D to be what they should be when the O consistently can't move the ball because of a 'serviceable' QB. Several of the 2nd half scoring drives on Monday came off VT drives that never moved and gave OSU solid field position.
That compromises the D and puts them in a bad spot, not to mention wearing them out. Then we get the folks who start blaming the D for giving up too many points...
We should roll with whoever comes in and proves they can move the sticks. If they can do that, the points will come.

They lost one game to the #1 team in the country... hell, if the Hokies could somehow run the table the rest of the way and win the conference, they're still in contention for a playoff spot. (That's assuming the usual suspects choke at least one game, and we witness the standard SEC cannibalism.)
Everybody has a bad night. First game of the season, more times than not, is always pretty weird.
It is absolutely unreasonable and unfair to judge how Motley will play the rest of the season based on his performance the other night. The coaches have already stated that they did not tailor the rest of the game to emphasize Motley's skill set. Basically, Motley already had one hand tied behind his back. They will roll him out more next week for sure. That's going to make a huge difference.
Motley will now get a majority of the practice reps. That's going to be mentally huge for his progression.
We get Shai back this week. As French pointed out in his review, the line opened up highway sized cutback lanes that JC and Trey couldn't get back to. I believe Shai has the vision to get back to those lanes, and 4 yd gains are going to turn into 24 yd gains. Once the Hokies can get teams to truly respect the run game, Malleck, Ford and Hodges are going to be running free off of play action.
The defense is going to look better. OSU's OL was immensely improved over last year, and they OBVIOUSLY spent A LOT of time preparing for the Hokies. We're just not going to see another team that is going to be able to hatch this elaborate of a plan again this year, and with that many options on offense. It's time to admit the obvious. Last year's game was a perfect storm for the defense. Inexperienced front playing Coach Foster for the first time, no Braxton Miller spin moves, and Brewer was ridiculously lucky on more than a few of his 3rd down throws. (I remember one 3rd down conversion he made early in the game throwing back across his body over the middle for a first down. That same throw against GT was a pick six.)
With that said, who knows? Maybe Motley is not the leader that the team needs, and they have to look elsewhere on the roster. But the key is "who knows". We as fans certainly can't judge that from part of the 2nd half of one game against #1 OSU where probably one of the more stronger leaders of the team went down unexpectedly..
Have faith, and enjoy the season. Fall is coming, better temperatures and turning leaves are on the way. The world will be beautiful.

At the time, VT didn't have it and you'll find people still with the stance that we don't have it.
Exposure like Monday night helps a lot.
The Ad needs to find ways to help that along, such as making sure ESPN gets the NSGS report on the minor earthquakes occurring during the game.
Anybody ever wondered what a guy like pj fleck from Western Michigan could do at tech? I'm thinkin a young coach like that may be just what we need to really step up recruiting, that guy is a passionate, fiery up and coming coach.
Comparing ourselves to OSU is obviously wrong. But comparing ourselves to Clemson isn't crazy. That's more of the level we should be recruiting.
Don't TCU and Baylor have recruiting grounds in the largest state of the union? I'd say if they can get a 2nd or 3rd tier player from in state, those guys are still going to be on par with a lot of guys from the 757 just based on the volume of talent and the fact that Texas ranks: God, Football, Country (somewhere in the order) of life importance.

Distance from home and remoteness of campus is meaningless in the digital era.
you keep saying this but do you have any proof to back up this claim? I personally know 4 D1 level recruits this coming year and they all want to play in bigger cities closer to home. one of them is even considering playing for a school he has grown up hating because it's closer to home.
Depth is not a minor issue. And considering the way we reacted to the Brewer injury, being only 2 deep across the board will not solve these issues. At key spots like QB, we have to be 3 or 4 deep, or else we're going to turtle every time we have an injury like that, terrified that the backup will get hurt, too.

i think the "good ol' boys" mindset is really being knocked out in many, many places both inside and outside of college sports. Excellent point.
Frankly, we're not going to be a national power. The best we can hope to do is to be a regional power at a time when all of the chips fall the right way.
We're justly proud of the brand new indoor practice facility. "Best in the land", etc. We'd need to be able to raise enough money to build 3 of those EVERY YEAR before we're in Ohio State's league financially. We'd need 50% more seats, and still ticket prices would have to double. It's just not reasonable.
We'll never be one of the big boys. We just need to be there when the big boys stumble.

Rather, it's an accurate account of what happened to the defense, based on first hand accounts from Foster and the players. I love Bud and think he's the best in the business, but Urban Meyer and Ohio State got the better of him and Tech on Monday—and that's exactly what was conveyed.
A little rain wouldn't be the worst thing. That tends to benefit the receivers over the defensive backfield, and we've got the WR's and TE's the take advantage of it.
we played against the most talented team to step on a football field in probably 4 or 5 years. They are a unanimous preseason #1 which is unprecedented. They were out lookin' for blood since we beat them at their house last year. Urban Meyer is a good coach and he wasn't going to be befuddled by Bud Foster's Defense two years in a row. He made a point to embarrass our defense and that's precisely what everyone outside of Blacksburg expected. We had a chance to make the game close with Brewer but he went out early in the 3rd and the game quickly got out of hand from that point forward. This is a much different team from the one that lost to Boise and JMU. No doubt, it will be tough for this team to pick their heads up and get prepared for a game on a short week, but I have faith that this team will do just that. Bud's defense was embarrassed on Monday and they are going to go through hell this week. I fully expect them to take it out on Furman. I would not be entirely surprised to see a very lopsided blowout in favor of the Hokies.
There are a number of huge things that prevent VT from taking the next step (in no particular order):
1) The athletic budget and athletics giving are in the middle of the pack for a power 5 school (see #2-#5 for some reasons why).
2) The school lacks a one or more huge athletics benefactors
3) Blacksburg is more than 2 hours from even a medium sized urban area and is one of the most "isolated" of the power 5 schools. Some athletes see that as a plus -- many don't. Conversely, geographically VT is near the top of the list of power 5 schools with other power 5 schools within 250 miles.
4) VT has to compete in-state with another power 5 institution (and one with larger and deeper financial and political resources).
5) VT's alumni and student population are in the middle of the pack compared to other power 5 schools.
I dont think he was going to cut it, just didnt look like he had the arm in practice and spring games.
