Picked to win by the ACC media groups and not coaches from around the country who couldn't give a crap about a team they don't play.
Look for the AP poll to do that. Coaches poll has at least a little more honesty and separation from media hype. Just the tiniest bit...

Remember this is voted on by the coaches. I wouldn't be surprised if the AP Poll had us in the top 25 in order to boost interest.
I am surprised we weren't in the Top 25 in the attempt to boost interest in the game. Not that this sort of thing happens routinely or anything.

Va Tech's NCAA "violations" dealing with Bruce Smith,
1) Father acquired a truck load of firewood from a Va Tech Alumnus, left in the Smith's yard in the summer. Bruce Smith had to chop the wood that was left. Some say Bruce's father had to arrange for the actual delivery, as it was not delivered by the Alumnus.
"It was a question of right and wrong," Smith said. "I did nothing wrong. I wasn't the one to be punished. That wood that my father was supposed to have gotten, I had to chop that wood. Somebody brought it to the house and dumped it in the yard. It was 90 degrees outside and my father couldn't go after it. He can't walk across the room and bend over for something without coughing. He's real sick. Somebody just wanted him to have a nice, warm winter. He would have done it himself and it would have killed him. It's tough to keep him put, so I did it. And then here comes the NCAA . . . "
2) Va Tech had 5 in-home contacts during recruitment with the Smith family, rules allowed 3 contacts.
3) Va Tech paid for 3 trips to Va Tech by Bruce Smith during recruitment, rules allowed 1 paid trip.
Multiple 7-6 SEC teams in the preseason coaches poll, August really is right around the corner.
Weird, espn radio just started talking about this very thing after I finished typing.
Says a lot about how weak OOC scheduling is across the board. This is one reason why I like the 4 team playoff right now. It should encourage teams to think about strength of schedule. We could probably go as high as an 8 team playoff before it starts going the other way and teams schedule as soft as possible.

No one is saying that one's level of commitment, dedication or fandom is directly correlated to how much they donate to the program - You need to pay more to get more, that's all. Our booster who donates in the millions (Wes Worsham) is on the sideline for every game. The fans in the club level don't get that option, not because they're lesser people/Hokies, just because they pay for a different experience.

I find it interesting that VT had the lowest annual funding of any program in the national title game since 1998 by a good margin. It doesn't surprise me, but it's an interesting factoid. It just shows the need for financial support if VT wants even to get to the next level. First, they need to get BACK to being a consistent top 25 team.
Wes Worsham? I believe he is on field for the games. Andy Bitter wrote a couple pieces on him a couple years back.

If you consider the London factor, they have the toughest schedule EVERY YEAR.
I'd say the coaches poll is probably worse than the media ones. Mostly because it's been shown that many coaches don't watch or pay much attention to teams they don't play in the next few games or at all that season. They just hand it off to an assistant or almost randomly fill it in.
