So I know an admin at SJHS and I can say that she was extremely doubtful that he could make the cut. She ate her words and said she was proud and impressed with the young man. Glad he is on our side.

"I started to lose faith a little bit, but something just told me to keep my head up and keep trying. I just kept trying and studied a lot," Settle said. "It still hasn't hit me, but when it does hit me, I'm going to feel so great just being able to go to college."

Something tells me this kid is going to go complete beast on ACC offenses during his career with the good guys.

Thanks French. This is really interesting

"At first, it was going in one ear and out the other, but later on in the process, I had to step up because some of these coaches really lost faith in me. That's another reason why I'm really excited I picked Virginia Tech because they were so determined that I was going to be successful."

Settle, who committed to Virginia Tech in January at the Under Armour all-American game over Louisville and Southern California, admitted it angered him when many of the schools to initially offer a scholarship expressed doubt over his eligibility. Some stopped communicating with him altogether because of the academic issues.

It might be just the right time for a VT graduate to start a underwear company with a catchy logo.

It's just polyester, after all, but it is clearly downright lucrative.

Yeah... SB Nation essentially went in and cleaned house with their writers and editors after that. Pissed off the powers that be that the owners of the site would allow something that ridiculous to run, and it took them a few months to find someone else to run it. It might still be called Gobbler Country, but it isn't the same as it used to be.

Article about his work to get his grades up.

Edit: this really stood out

Maybe the computers did, but the overall rankings did not.

Week 12 rankings had LSU #1, VT #8.
Week 13 had VT #6, LSU #7 -- these would be the rankings going into the conference championship games.

In order, it was Missouri (11-1), WVU (10-1), OSU (11-1), Georgia (10-2), Kansas (11-1), VT (10-2), LSU (10-2).

OSU was already done for the season, with no championship game. Georgia wasn't playing the SEC title game, so everyone knew they would be falling. Kansas had lost to Missouri, so they missed out on their conference title chances. And I don't know how VT was ahead of LSU based on that week 2 game.

So realistically, the pecking order looked like this: Missouri, WVU, OSU, LSU, VT. Basically, the top two teams that didn't lose during the final week (championship week for the SEC, ACC, and Big 12), were going to the BCS title game. Missouri and WVU lost, which made the top three OSU, LSU, and VT. OSU only had one loss, and LSU beat VT head to head.

Both he and Frank Gore would be in the discussion. So would Travis Henry (Tennessee doesn't win their national championship without him even though he rotated with Jamal Lewis when Lewis was healthy.) Adrian Peterson. I would say Barry Sanders, but I only saw highlights. I never watched an Oklahoma State game when he played.

Fisher was the guy who pushed Fisher as a DB, saying he would only be recruited as a DB etc etc.

As it turns out, his rating was based on camps and looks - not a lot of actual film and even less film of him playing DB. Then he goes and loses 20lb during his redshirt year and gets moved to whip because he doesn't have the hips for DB. My bust meter is going crazy and I was someone excited about him becoming a headhunting FS.
