Columbus probably has about the second or third best supporters groups in the MLS. I would put Seattle and Portland ahead of them but it isn't by far. Barra Brava and The Screamin Eagles aren't too shabby for DC United either.

# | 106.7/Feinstein - Buzz Williams from Marquette rumored to be a candidate for HC of Hokies I'm gonna go out on what I consider to be a pretty sturdy limb here and say that he won't be our next Men's Basketball coach. Again, Whit went over this a few days ago. It's best to just ignore the rumors until we hear something legitimate (ie, from the athletics dept.)

Coach K, Coach Williams, Bill Self, Mike Lonergan, Jim Boeheim, Dean Smith, Jim Calhoun, Jim Phelan....I would argue that Olson is actually more in this group than extremely colorful. He did have his moments though. These guys know when to growl but spend most of their time with a smile on their face and a pretty calm demeanor. It might be because of how much they won, as losing is when you see the dog faces of most coaches anyway. See Boeheim this year against Duke.

Yeah, we do the NC schools more, but that may be just as a matter of proximity. We're a lot closer to some of the NC schools than we are to the VA schools.
Having said that, it looks like protectionism on the part of OSU. They're the big dog in the state, and the only surefire way to keep it that way is to prevent anyone else from being able to take the crown. Penn State/Pitt feels the same way. Pitt was a threat, so Paterno never scheduled them. Can't have a rivalry if you don't play. Temple, on the other hand, was never much of a threat.
We're done here. Close the internet. Everything that it needed to do has been done.

I'm kinda surprised that nobody's come up with a "2 wahoos 1 commonwealth cup" gag yet.
I think all of this attention will actually make it even more unlikely for Ohio State to schedule Dayton, even though by making it such a rarity adds fuel to the fire. I hope I am wrong and they see the possibility of having great in state matchup games. Congrats to Dayton on smacking big brother in the back of the head.
We used to schedule in state opponents but we have gotten away from scheduling a lot of the in state Virginia schools on a regular basis though and we have a by far more in depth list of possible opponents than toSu. Looking back ten years, we played three this season, but before that it hadn't been since 2007-08 that we had played that many in state opponents. Our version of Dayton would be George Mason. Why is it with a school that has such a huge fan base in the DC Metro area that we don't regularly play the mid major in that market?

5 Times: VMI
4 Times: Old Dominion (0 since 2007-08)
3 Times: Radford, Longwood, William and Mary (0 since 2005-06)
2 Times: George Washington(technically a DC school with VA campuses), Richmond, James Madison(Last time any of these were played 2007-08)
1 Time: VCU, Norfolk State, Liberty
0 Times: George Mason
We seem to actually schedule the lower tier North Carolina schools with more frequency than we do the Virginia schools.
This is why on the recent post about improving the basketball program by Brian, I was such a big supporter of the suggestion of making the weekend tournament of all Virginia schools happen. You have twelve Division I opponents just in Virginia including LOLUVA. Schedule three each year for a mini round robin at Tech (sans UVA). Play two games each, schedule the team Tech doesn't play to return the next year. Agree to similar type round robins at VCU and George Mason on a rotating basis. They would likely create a similar type round robin at UVA with the same schools, giving the state three or four consolidated competitions of NCAA basketball each year to look forward to. It puts four state teams on your schedule each year if you do a home and away round robin each season. Would it take a ton of coordination sure but the excitement and dollars it would likely bring in should far outweigh the work to do it.
There's a game I'm pretty sure it was the play against GT - 2005 where we blocked a field goal and DJ Parker ran it back for a touchdown and the announcer yells "DENNIS DAVIS" all excitedly. I saw the replay on sportscenter (game was in Blacksburg, so of course I was at the game) and looked at my buddy and said "Who the hell is Dennis Davis?" Found out later he was a guy on GT's team and the commentator must've been looking at their roster instead of ours. It was just funny how excited/confident the announcer was and how wrong he was about the name. Unfortunately I couldn't find the clip.
So, either CFB is diplomatic enough to dismiss someone and still be on friendly terms, or Journell has the mental acuity of a brick for thinking he left on good terms. Maybe both.
