You would be amazed at the gap that is there for a lot of middle class kids trying to go to college. Parents make too much money to qualify for financial aid but too little to cover the expenses. I ran into that trying to go to college on my own.

Well, I waited to fill out my bracket until the I knew the results of the play-in games. I thought I was being prudent, but it turns out, I eliminated myself from the billion dollar bracket challenge by waiting too long.

Now, I can accurately predict 63 games no problem, but by filling out a bracket before the play-in games, you're basically predicting 67 games, which is almost mathematically impossible. This tournament is bull crap.

I was there between 04-09 and i wasnt a big fan of TOTs. I only went there to down some rails before the night began (in and out).

Rivermill tots or fries are so damn good. Plus they have a great selection of beers on tap. And of course, Boogieburg!

i enjoyed most of the bars in summer. In short summer in Blacksburg is pretty cool. Everyone should spend at least one summer session there.

I was also a big fan of PKs myself. Went there alot of thursday nights after wine class for a chance for a free dinner

I'm very opinionated on the Blacksburg bars, as my friends all know. I can't believe nobody has mentioned Rivermill yet. It's got a huge selection of great beers on tap (shout out to the Left Hand Milk Stout), darts, pool, and the music isn't so loud that you can't hear yourself think. The only downside is the dirty mop water smell, but I've come to love it.

Hokie House is okay downstairs for happy hour, but upstairs gets too cramped and smoky for my tastes. And the music gets turned up to 11 for no reason. There's no room to dance, so the music only serves to make it impossible to talk with friends without screaming.

Big Al's is the antichrist of bars. I know 2 girls and 1 guy who have been roofied there. In addition, the bouncers are complete assholes. They kicked out the nicest girl I know because she accidentally miscounted her change and instead of tipping $0.75, was $0.25 short. Even though she apologized and tried to give them a dollar, they just flexed and kicked her out. Never again.

TOTS is completely overrated. Maybe I'm just weird, but I don't like scrounging up cash, which I never have on me, to pay a cover in order to fight through crowds in order to drink from a crappy beer selection and either a) compete with a bunch of sweaty dudes on a cramped dance floor, trying to dance with girls too drunk to know who they're dancing on, or b) not find a table outside and end up cramped in a corner. If I wanted to do this, I could just go to any Pheasant Run party ever.

Really the only bars worth going to, in my opinion, are Mill, Thunderground (or The Underground as everyone else in the world calls it), Champs (occasionally), and Hokie House (downstairs during Happy Hour).

Thunderground is great once you get over your irrational fear of townies. There's great beer, plenty of dart boards, and, most importantly, NO OBNOXIOUSLY LOUD MUSIC. Same thing goes for Champs, minus the beer selection, but plus pool and shuffleboard.

I just really wish the bars would turn down the music. TOTS at least has an excuse because of the dance floor, but it's already really hard to try to talk to people when they're drunk. The loud music just makes it impossible. Maybe I'm just getting old, though. Get off my lawn.

I agree with everything you and Alum07 said and I welcome this future as you do. I just thought the statement about "basic competence" was a bit over the edge.
A new chapter is starting. We are seeing the start of a change in management culture which values what you mention more equally with the tactical operation aspects - and that is a very good thing! I think we should respect the positive aspects of the past that will allow Whit to employ his plan, while recognizing that it wasn't perfect (and where it wasn't perfect), so we don't repeat bad history. Overall summary statements can sometimes help lose that visibility.

Grad student with an adviser who knows a bunch about the town of Blacksburg. Apparently the two locations were owned and leased by one gentlemen who was notorious for being a complete and utter jerk. The owner of Sharkey's was doing well enough in the one location that they bought the corner property off of the owner and moved in there. Upon moving in they noticed that the water/gas (don't know which) lines went through the corner property over into the second space. Seeing this, they shut off the lines leading to the second location in retaliation to the previous leasing issues. Sharkey's refuses to open up the lines until either the owner of the second property sells it or passes away.

Moral of the story: Don't be a jerk.

Most hokies do understand that, but there were plenty of issues with his performances over the last two years that had nothing to do with anyone else as well. There were plenty of times when he wasn't getting any help just as there were plenty of times he wasn't helping himself. It was whatever the exact opposite of serendipity is.

Also, keep in mind, this is Whitfiled's job as a private QB coach to hype his clients.

Jim Weaver was a competent accountant. He kept us in the black and could build facilities while still managing debt service. That's probably half of the job. The other half of the job involves communication and public/fan relations. Jim Weaver was not competent at this, not even remotely close. His bungling of every aspect of the Seth Greenberg firing was a lesson plan on what not to do in every respect.

There's simply more to the job than keeping everything in the black and making sure Frank Beamer is happy - something he almost failed at!

Yea, you'd think there would be some financial aid if she needed it. The fact that she tries to argue for it as a legitimate career choice is laughable. But on the porn side of it, if for some reason she decides that she wants to do that instead then she just launched her career in that industry because of how famous she's become.

Haha, it's like when you hear a girl from your high school is doing porn. You just have to watch the video (and a lot of girls from my high school have done porn oddly enough).

Alright so this story is ridiculous:

1) If the girl's family is actually that poor, they wouldn't be paying full tuition. A school with Duke's endowment fund will have an incredible financial aid package for students like her. The idea that she's doing porn because she needs to pay ~200k in tuition is ridiculous.

2) The point of going to Duke is to get a good job when she graduates. No employer is going to want a porn star working for them, even someone as well-educated as her. She's a fucking moron.

AKA the REAL first round.

What are these chicken wings you speak of? We do Turkey Legs around here....and have one on me.

Oh yeah... pass by reference.

I feel like I'm letting Dr. Athanas down.
