Yes, our books were good... but at what cost? We ROUTINELY let coaches go when they got a little bit of success and Jim balked at raising their salaries to be equitable to the level at which their teams were playing. Under Weaver we were in a constant rebuilding cycle throughout all sports because of our frugal ways, lest we forget we very nearly lost Frank Beamer to UNC because of our frugal ways of never wanting to open a checkbook.
The whole concept of recognizing when you have a great opportunity and doing the right thing and making it happen - its a world changer for VT athletics. Its a MASSIVE culture shock that will only benefit us long-term. Yes, cutting costs to keep the books clean is great, but sometimes you have to spend money to maximize future profits, and it sounds like Whit fully understands and embraces that concept, and it WILL pay off. This is the mindset that wins you championships, something we've never experiences in any team sport at any time in our history. From what we're seeing right now, there's absolutely no reason to think Whit won't deliver our first during his tenure.
He's not saying she was directly tricked of forced. But indirectly (college/money) she was forced to do it. Like he said, she didn't wake up and say I want to do porn because it's fun. She went into it because there was a pressure to do so by an outside force (money).
Edit: And she's not doing this to pay for school. This is her future now, she knows what she's doing getting the media involved. She's starting with a bang and will probably be a super successful pstar in a few years. What respectable firm/employer would hire her after this? None

Instead of passing in hipster you should just make the return value a boolean. Then you are giving the compiler a chance to use return value optimization to eliminate (an admittedly very small) copy. Also it allows you to test on the function return value without having to declare a variable to hold the result.

So you believe this chick at Dook was forced or tricked into it against her will? If that's the case then she's making a bold-faced lie to the media. I seem to recall a story a couple years ago of a famous actor's (Laurence Fishburne) daughter making the decision to go into porn.
Cellar has some of the best food available in Blacksburg at bars. I used to drink at Ton 80 with the Civil Engineering professors.

1. I think that with Lefty, it righted a Hokie Nation visible issue that we had been pointing out for years. You might be right on this one about "competence".
2. I don't think we can say that Jim Weaver was incompetent - our books are in pretty good shape. With Whit, he replaces a respected AD whom was respected by some and despised by some. He had his plan and some did not agree with it. Now we have a younger AD whom we all think can relate to our younger alumni as well as the older and make VT relevant in things other than football (while of course maintaining football's focus - its the cash cow, right?) and address alumni donations so we can compete in a changing college sports environment.
Note: I didn't agree with Weaver's basketball coach hiring.
Proximity to Charlotte and Atlanta certainly doesn't hurt either
I honestly don't know about the industry to be insightful, but I can admire somebody who wants to finish college without loans outstanding. I worked all four years I was Tech to finish without loans or any significant ones. Just not sure about that profession.
I am only sad that the image I posted shows up as a big black box on the mobile version instead of people getting to see BamBam and his Turkey Leg.

Uhh.. lets just say I know a guy.... that did something very similar for the VT @ UVa Football game this season. This guy that I know really well lives in Richmond and his roommate works for a small newspaper that is affiliated with the Richmond Times Dispatch. A few months before the game he was given the opportunity to request media passes for the game. He did so knowing that he couldn't go, but his roommate a VT alum would realllyyyy like to go for free and take a shot and getting on the field and press areas. Fast forward a few months. Press pass and photographer pass are on the kitchen table. :)
Fast forward again to game day. Show up, tailgate for a few hours and build up confidence. After tailgating change into khaki pants, a white VT athletic polo and a throw on maroon VT fleece. Gotta look the part, you know. Get to the gate. Flashed the media pass to the Ticket Usher. He tells me that Media check-in is a couple gates down, but to just come on through. Walked over to the grass hill about 10 minutes before kickoff. I am a few beers and a few bourbon shots in at this point so I was feeling pretty badass. I walked past all these snob job UVa students trying to heckle me for being in their "student section." I made a couple standard UVa jokes... Decade of Dominance is about to happen, Spring Game attendance (I don't think they understood, because they probably aren't aware they have a spring game. Seriously). Get down to the Security Guards and I did some stereotyping and picked a female security guard that looked like she was my age and probably hungover. Showed her the pass and asked if I could step onto the field to take a few pictures before the game for the newspaper. She lets me right on through and then the fun began.
I walked around the field pretending to take notes until kick off then settled in right between the VT bench and the cheerleaders. Spent the entire first quarter there, but then I needed let some of the bourbon out so I figured I would just walk to the end zone entrance to the field and try to find a bathroom. I roamed around under the stadium until I found a bathroom and the UVa locker room. I opened the door to the locker room and met my first bit of resistance from UVa security. I apologized and walked back to the field.
Settle back in right next to Shane and Grimes. It was awesome. Stayed in that area for the rest of the game. Was one of the best days of my life. I took tons of pictures too, but I can't upload them from work.
A few side notes that you guys will be interested in - Grimes was a hell of a coach, between every series he had all the O line guys together talk about the previous drive and he would ask them how they could improve next time on O. He was the most energetic of the coaches throughout the game. Unfortunately, the O line didn't share that same energy or fire. It was disappointing. Shane is also a solid coach. He seem to be in touch with all the players and not just the RBs. Logan was the tallest guy on the field by far. JC looked smaller in real life than he does on TV or the stands believe it or not. I am 6'1 200 pounds and I wasn't really blown away by the overall size of the team. Of course guys like Gayle and Maddy looked big, but overall it was easy to see how a team built like Stanford could have their way with us. Oh, Trey's leg break was gross. I will just leave it at that. Sadly, I will be surprised if he gets carries before October. Nasty! I would NEVER do anything to piss Bud Foster off. Holy hell that guy is intense from 10 yards away. If you are soft at all then you couldn't handle playing for Bud and that probably explains why some guys that we have high hopes for never develop. I didn't see much of CFB but what I did see what about what you would expect/see on TV. I expected more energy and comradery from the team as a whole. The guys seemed down and the environment was sterile. The defense had a lot more energy than the offense, but the D plays lights out and the offense only managed one TD all game against a UVa team that sucked.
All in all, great experience watching the game from the sideline and being part of the team for a game.
He's right. I did not know many non-assholes that played those sports growing up. Still more non-assholes than fans at their spring game though

I don't know why I found this so funny, but it's awesome and so accurate. Also, fun fact: A couple days ago a female friend left her laptop open (with Facebook up) in Owens. I realized that she is friends with Braxton Pfaff and before she could get back from refilling her drink, I had liked about a dozen random things on his timeline (on her account). I felt that was a healthy way of expressing my excitement about him entering the program.
Oh, I think he thought about it quite a bit.

Hammertime is amazing. My friends and I have to systematically order pitchers at the right times so we each drink a pitcher in that hour (they don't let us order a pitcher for just one person).

I'm not a huge dt patron, but I'm a rather big fan of the Underground (food's great too, especially their burgers and weekend brunch, who knew?) and PK's is another favorite of mine. I tend to stay away from Hokie House or TOTS simply because I'm not all that big on a huge mass of people being between me and my whiskey, pool and darts.
After looking at Itrepeter's earlier list of candidates, It looks like Tommy Ammaker would also be a good fit for the list of criteria outlined by French. What do you guys think?

The "force" of it being the $60k yr tuition rate and the inability of her p's to pay it, right? Because based on her interviews she certainly makes it sound like it was her decision.
