So disappointed. As of Friday they were forecasting 8-16 inches here in central PA. Now accuweather (which is based here in State College) is saying 3-5. Boo urns. If we're gonna get snow, I wish it would be enough to close down the town.

The bottle has an excellent point here. I want to say it was Joe (might've been a TSL article) that mentioned recently how Frank likes to hire people he trusts and let them do their thing. I have no doubt at all that Frank would never tell Lefty, "you have to start THIS guy because I said so." If Loeffler thinks one guy deserves the starting spot over another, I fully trust Frank to trust his coach and go with it.

Either way it doesn't really matter what Frank said. Frank doesn't micromanage the coaches. Offensively or defensively. Loeffler's comments suggest a wide open competition, and I'll bet that's what we will see.

As HDubya pointed out, definitely has a bit of a baseball windup. However, apart from that, his mechanics seem petty good at this point. His footwork isn't bad (although I have yet to see him under center) and I'm a HUGE fan of 3 aspects of his game in particular:
1. He keeps the ball nice and high when dropping and scrambling. That makes his release much quicker (very important with his little windup) and his throws more accurate and consistent (you don't get to 70% completions by accident).
2. He scrambles to throw. A good number of those highlights show him getting pressure up the middle, right off the snap. He evades the rush and, instead of tucking it and running (which he has room to do) like so many young, mobile QBs do, he keeps his eyes downfield and finds a receiver. There's a reason Morris is now a highly-respected college football coach: he's a very good coach; this is just one more example of that.
3. He's very good at running the read option (at least in highlights, hard to tell if he misses a bunch of reads on film they don't show us) AND, IMO more importantly, executing a good or even decent fake, coming up and delivering a ball on time.

Lots of stuff to get excited about, with some room for improvement as well. No doubt he'll be a great addition to the QB competition in Blacksburg this fall.

I think it's fairly evident that SL didn't buy into the LT should be a TE and ML the QB hubris thrown around last year. I even think he thought LT was a pretty good QB. While bowls may be exhibitions the exhebition that ML put on was not where a 4th yr JR needed to be, hence the transfer route. Letting Motley, Macmillan, Durkin and Ford have a couple of yrs to develop under SL maybe just the trick, if Brewer can fill the position. Maybe we should look for some LB with the same passion. We are really thin there.

Not promoting QB by committee, or even suggesting it. This will be an opportunity for the offense to gather itself as one cohesive unit. It has spent the last 2 seasons on the back of #3 (for good and for bad) it's time to play as a unit.

Brewer, a 6-foot-1, 185-pounder from Austin, Texas, said he narrowed his choices down to Virginia Tech and Kentucky after having his transfer restricted to exclude Big 12 schools at the top of his list like Texas and TCU.

I find it interesting how often VT has gone up against Kentucky for recruits lately. I know their new coaches have been praised for drastically improving recruiting, but it's good to see us come out ahead in several of those battles given our superior accomplishments on the field (though I think the other notable battle was for Brady Taylor, and we all know how that unfortunately ended).

Competition is good, and it's great to have options, but has there ever been a time where things were more uncertain at QB? The guy with seniority has not looked great. We've got a bunch of young guys, none of which look like an heir apparent. And we've got a transfer with some experience coming from an offensive scheme worlds apart from ours.

I would guess Brewer will be at the top of the list, assuming he can mesh with the team. But that's just a shot in the dark based on the fact that we sought after and convinced him to transfer. I would be more than happy if we could just bring some DNA from Big 12 offenses into ours.
