I'm not trying to argue that Seth should have been given another year. In fact, I was surprised as the days passed after the end of the season that we didn't hear about him being canned.

I guess my main argument was that, given the choices of either giving him another year or firing him in mid-April, you should give him another year. Since we didn't fire him in March, even if we were losing a couple players and coaches, it would have cost much less in terms of damage to the program to hang onto Seth for another year than to bring in the "best available option" so late in the offseason.

Ford is a possession guy as is cam Phillips. Harrison is the faster of the WRs im just saying hes not one of the faster guys in the country.

It was exciting because VT could hang with and beat up on better teams. Every game was winnable - Maryland - Eastern Shore - #1 Duke/NC/Wake Forest. That made every game worth watching

Actually, 10 hr/wk at $8/hr would be $80/wk, considering that with that income they'd be well below the personal exemption amount of about $5500. And even if they went over, the first tax bracket is up to $9k (post-deductions and exemptions), at 10%. If they somehow make more than 14k, their tax rate on any additional dollars is 15% up to $36k. There will be some state taxes, but those are a good bit less than federal, and there's also some SS and Medicare deductions, but overall it's nowhere near 25% unless you're making a bit above the poverty line.

I know $80/wk isn't much, but that's about $350 per month, which amounts to $1400 per semester. That is about in line with the stipends that they always ask for.

Also, can you provide a source to your 90% value? That just seems very high.

1. i don't want to completely trash him. he did yeoman's work raising the profile of the program, but his time had come and gone
2. how and when it was done was extremely poor
3. if jj isn't the right guy, that's a poor hire, but that doesn't mean seth should have stayed

Aside from what happened between him and Weaver, I'll never really understand the position of the fans that said Seth had to go after the 2011-12.

It's so sad to see Cassell right now. It's like 2004-2011 never really happened. All that positive momentum was for s#!+

He may have had his faults, but he always wanted what was best for Virginia Tech. Seth engaged the students unlike any coach I've seen at VT in the last 10 years. For many seasons, the VT BBall product was as exciting and competitive as any other in the ACC.

Seth completely changed how VT BBall was perceived on a national level. The team and his television charisma brought real exposure to the program. He did all this without getting in trouble with the NCAA and without ever really embarrassing the university. He was a tireless worker and a winner. He made all those big-game football collapses somewhat bearable because he was the anti-Beamer against top 5 teams. (In his time at Virginia Tech, Greenberg was 3-3 against top-ranked teams, with all three losses coming on final possessions) Seriously, what more do you want?

2 losing seasons in 9 years playing in the Big East and ACC.

Do the fans really understand how difficult it is to field a competitive team in bball in the middle of no-where?

The top-25 is almost all university's in big markets. Wichita State may be a cinderella, but its a cinderella playing in a town of 400,000 people. Football does fine with alums coming into town on the weekend, but you need real local support ($$$$) when playing multiple m-f games in bball.

You need a very special coach to overcome this. At one point we had that coach.

Trust me, I'm well aware. Some of the guys that sit at press row saw him practicing before a game a couple weeks ago and didn't recognize him since they are use to seeing him in a suit. When I told him who it was, they came to the same conclusion that a lot of other people make, that he would be the starter this year had he been eligible. With him and Devin next year, PG is set, but SG still needs some depth since Adam has injury issues and Ben is interchangeable at the 3. So JJ getting the 3 recruits he is getting makes a lot of sense since Eddie will be gone and there is a need for depth as this season has shown.

But now a days 90% of internships are unpaid. And 10 hours a week at 8 dollars an hour after taxes you could make 50 60 dollars a week. That's nothing to write home about

Well unless those students possessed the same level of talent and ability...I would find it hard to believe that financially it would make sense for institutions to continue providing those scholarships.

I would love the chance to suit up and play for VT, but I highly doubt anyone is going to pay to see me do it. And when you get down to it, thats what this is all about. Are you good enough that someone will pay to see you perform your craft?

And if the answer is yes, then I think everyone has the right to use what leverage they have to protect themselves now and in the future (be it from injury, cost of medical care, financial opportunities, etc)

Yeah, I think a booster would do just that. I mean look at SMU. Hundreds of thousands of dollars went through that "slush fund," and that was in the 80's. Eric Dickerson would've gone to Texas A&M, had he not received a brand new car payed for with booster money.

And yeah, if you ask anyone if they would like more money for whatever they're doing, I'm sure they would all say yes. I understand the argument, and like I said, the system in place is far from perfect, but I'm convinced paying athletes will cause a lot more problems than it will solve.
