AD's, like any employees, have strong suits and weaknesses. It's fair to say that Weaver's strong suit is his financial management of the program and his weakness was fundraising. Frankly, so was Steger's.
I hope the new president and AD see that there is a significant avenue for improvement in fundraising on both sides of the house. On the bright side, we're in really good shape for having a sub-par fundraising arm....just think if we can get that together!

did Weaver say that we had a chance to have a Thursday night game and declined? Or did ESPN not select us for a home Thursday night game?
I assumed after a 7-6 season, ESPN didn't deem us worthy of 2 Thursday night games anymore and picked the GT game as the one they wanted. They were right, it was a doozy. And if they'd picked the UNC@VT game, two things would have happened:
1. It wasn't an exciting game, and
2. It would have further diluted our Saturday slate.
What can CFB do to get and keep great assistant coaches? His hands are tied with salary limits. Is being an assistant at VT considered a stepping stone or a dead end? How well does he develop coaches? How many assistants have gone on to bigger and better things? What will ultimately determine the long term greatness of VT in football is what happens after CFB leaves. How is VT planning to keep the program going and growing? If CFB can't hire great coaches can he develop them? If he is good at preparing great coaches there would be plenty of assistants knocking at the doors in Blacksburg. So it either comes down to money or opportunity to learn. VT doesn't seem to be able to offer enough of either to compete for the top coaching talent. I feels sad.
So the reports he was already offered are incorrect? If they had offered it wouldn't be 7-10 days...
Well, I'm medical now so I won't be in the hole in the ground... But I'm sure the fact that I used to work on missiles had A LOT to do with my assignment selection unfortunately.

Just because he coached it doesn't mean he knew what he was doing. I DO NOT want stiney coaching OL. Its a re-tread. Some of the very skilled rb's we had and dual threat qbs we had covered up the offensive line deficiency

I've confused the two myself a couple of times.
But we (Hokies) only scored a FG in that game. Remember all the 3 & outs? The zero offense? I mean at least we scored a TD and moved the ball against LSU.
Me too. Contingent worker. Company opted not to renew my contract at the end of this past year.
My wife and I are 2006 grads and joined HC that year and have held season tickets since. We have lived in California and overseas since 2007, so have made very few games between deployments. We donate or sell our tickets at face value. Continue to pay HC and tickets because I honestly thought that you had to do both, but may consider not paying for tickets in the future. Would prefer to donate to other academic areas of need.
There really is not enough contact from the HC, we move every one to three years in various countries and the Alumni Association has no problem finding us, but HC sends mail late or not at all. Hopefully the new AD will modernize/energize the club.
Last two bowl games we went to were 2006 Peach and 2007 OB. Those seats were overpriced and poor, so now we know not to purchase through school (probably not HC fault, but a major issue). That Kansas game still upsets me, plus why was it cold in Miami?
Hope to make the 2015 tOSU game in Lane, should be a definite night game.
Here's an idea for you younger grads - pool your resources to get better tickets. Instead of four of you donating $250 each, combine your contributions to achieve one Silver level membership in one person's name. That entitles the member to four season tickets - during the reshuffle you could have gotten pretty good seats.
Lavishly rewarding loyalty is what got us into this mess. And before I go any further, let me establish that loyalty is a great selling point for VT football. I'm not downplaying the virtue. But I will not agree that loyalty should trump results -- not at the salaries college football coaches make.
You say he stayed with the team for the sake of the team as though he had other options on the table. As I recall, he came up empty on a number of interviews for positions with other teams.
So while I applaud his willingness to take a demotion & modest pay cut and play nice with the new OC, I'm just a tad too cynical to ignore that he really didn't have a choice if he wanted to keep receiving a paycheck coaching football.
What Stiney earned with his job performance was a long-overdue demotion.
What he earned with his loyalty was not being fired, and an incredible salary for his lesser responsibilities.
I'd be interested in knowing: Of all the coaches who make less than their peers, could it be that we pay Stinespring better than most of his peers on other teams?
I really don't mean to tear him down. I'm trying to just be objective. I personally value Grimes more than I do Stinespring. And I think we are about to see that LSU does as well.
The question then is, how does VT value Grimes?
I like the fact that it's Butch Davis orchestrating the whole thing. I can actually see him doing something like that.
EDIT: hmm... on second thought, he did get caught running a fairly obvious cheating scandal so perhaps I better rethink this...
In my opinion, I like your opinion.
Just a couple more observations after reading the whole thread. It's pretty awesome to see so many different opinions and realize how much/little people know about the HC. In regards to the min donation level, how many more people would give if they cut it to $50? Would it be more than the amount of people that cut their current min donation in half? Their thinking is if you can afford $5/month you can likely swing $10. And it's probably not the min donation that keeps people away, those folks probably have a stronger reason to not give.
The monthly magazine is pretty good although most of it is old news by the time you get it. And don't forget about the keychain schedules!
I would dispute that Steger could not raise funds. His fund raising campaigns were highly succesful. The funds primarily went towards academics and facilities.
