If i'm not mistaken both of those guys redshirted, so they didn't even do it as true freshmen, although its possible they could have had similar success I believe they benefited from that redshirt
I can't help but think that to win a NC, you have to play dirty in the background a little bit, nowadays. There aren't many coaches out there today that have won more than one NC. There aren't many coaches that have taken more than one program to a NC.
An NC is an incredibly tough thing to win. You can have all the pieces of a great team together, and STILL not win it. Is it coveted, yes...but if it were the end all be all of the sporting world, then a lot of good schools are wasting a lot of money on something they will never attain.
Would be a huge loss; but you couldn't argue with the guy for taking NFL money. Is this assuming that he gets a full D-Coordinator gig or just a position coach at the NFL level? If is a D-Coordinator, you can't fault the guy. Would be a huge hit for the program considering the DB talent that wants to come here to play for DBU.

This is the same guy who decided to split time between Tyrod and Glennon for 2 years; both years waiting til a loss to burn Tyrod's "Redshirt".
I hope that an open competition will put the best QB in play, but one of the young guns will have to really be over and above Leal to put him on the field. I'm not saying I want Leal or don't want him, I'm just basing it off Franks history of conservative QB hierarchy.

Its not often that a fake FG gets knocked in the air and then lands in a linemans hands, leading to a real FG (which would have been a 3 points VT needed to win in regulation) or that a TD gets called a TD and then gets overturned due to some shaky replay call (no indisputable evidence). Or that a team gets outgained as badly as Michigan did and still wins.

Not sure that Lovie is even looking his direction just thought it was an interesting nugget to share and get others opinions. Torrian has done excellent at Virginia Tech and many think he can be the next great D coordinator when Bud leaves/promotes down the road.
I'm sorry, but I can't fault any of them for that. Shit happens. You, at some point, have to trust your players to make the right decision on the field. Part of what makes great players great isn't that the coach is saying "Do this" or "Do that"...it's the coach saying..."Here are a couple of plays. Take a read when you get out there, and do whichever you think best for the situation." Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. That's where a great player stands out. Do they make mistakes? Sure. CIP. But if the coach doesn't trust the player, then the player won't make it.
Why waste the year with a RS-Sr when you think you can have the same result with one of the Fr.? As much as Beamer won't do anything crazy, I don't think it's going to be his call. I expect there be a competition but unless Leal blows the rest of them away, I don't see why you would go with him outside of loyalty.
Those were all big loses considering the lack of depth. I wanted to see more Josh Stanford downfield throws, but I'm sure it was not because Loeffler didn't want to do it as much as they just couldn't get him open. Was surprised that the Paper Boy went M.I.A. too.
Injuries plagued us yesterday for the most part.
A valid argument on offense perhaps, but not on defense. No doubt Kyle Fuller is the most dynamic defensive player Tech's had in ages and I think we're a top 2-3 defense in the country when he's healthy, but he's missed 6 games this season? Our team had plenty of time to adjust. I don't expect our defense to not miss a beat, but guys were in position and missing tackles.
In many instances, Foster had the perfect playcall but the guy in position to make the play whiffed on the tackle.
This happened WAY TO MUCH.
FG missed due to 1st FG attempt in a game by a new kicker.
When I complained about the kicking game, that was more a problem throughout the season, not this game specifically. Additionally, it was directed at Frank/Cody, not the current Branthover (Frank for being a special teams coach and not having a solid game, Cody for leaving us hanging game after game).
The rules of football include field goals so that if a team marches down more than 3/4 of the field, that team has the opportunity to score some points, even if you can't make it to the endzone. We have no playmakers on offense (not a shot at our players, but an honest observation), so we have to string together numerous 4-10 yard plays to move he chains. Our offense works too hard to move down the ball 50+ yards and not get ANY points.
Note that I am happy with the direction of the offense, defense, and recruiting. Hoping special teams will get cleaned up next season.

Not every QB is Jamis Winston of Jonny Football. Thinking that a true freshman is going to come into next year and light the world on fire is going to be high expectations (and I am not even talking Heisman, just talking competent QB play). I think that a guy who has been in the program and has had the reps will be starting. Hopefully one of these freshman is going to be good enough to make it an open competition, but I don't see Beamer doing anything crazy. Sometimes you just have to have a Grant Noel type of year.

The offense definitely looked rusty in that game (of course O'Cainspring was there).
I'm not keen on our players retaliating, and I'm even less enthused about the idea of a coach condoning such action by designing a play to try to single the guy out for pain. I said on the game thread that I wouldn't have objected to someone leveling him with a clean hit, but going out of our way to try to go after the guy is dirty no matter how you cut it and I think VT is above that.
The fact that we actually were prepared for that Sugar Bowl, that we actually were dominating them in the second half, and still found a way to blow it is a further evidence that Beamer's big game coaching is lacking something.
Our tackling wasn't that clean, but let's not forget that this was a good game until LT3 got knocked out by dirty hits McGee. I think once the team knew LT3 was out and Leal was trying to be Superman the wheels came off. LT3 was having a pretty good game to that point and had he stayed in the score would've closer.
Beamer has always preferred a 2 back approach. If the talent is there, it makes sense to put the best players on the field. I think when David Wilson was the workhorse it was only because there was no Evans or Williams type to give him a break.
They have to get their $EC comments in now, since E$PN is launching the E$PN$EC Network next season.
And a couple had wins (including NCs) vacated due to violations of NCAA rules.
That video of Holtz and May really didn't upset me. I agree with them, we have lost our identity offensively. For years now, the problem has been poor offensive line play, and it has gotten worse each year until this year where we have seen some progress under new OL coaching. Without a good OL, you just aren't going to win championships, or many games for that matter, unless the skilled position talent is fantastic, which it hasn't been the last two years. It's unfair to judge these new coaches on this year alone considering the product they had to work with, but I believe they are definitely moving in the right direction and we probably won't see the product of their work until at least another two years.
Defensively, this game (and season, for that matter) would have been much different if we have had Exum and Ky. Fuller healthy. The Sun Bowl spiraled out of control in the final quarter bc of those two picks Leal threw, maybe not necessarily out of poor defensive play. Our defensive identity is the same as it always has been and should continue to improve and be solid as long as Foster sticks around.
The old saying used to be "offense wins games, but defense wins championships." While I still agree with this statement, the game of football has changed quite a bit over the past few years. Offensive talent and spread/speed schemes are getting better. Going forward, it's just going to take a better offense to win the big games. We just aren't going to see a big upswing offensively after one year, it will take time, but I believe we will get there.
To me, these new coaches are kind of like cooks in a kitchen. They've walked in behind the old cooks with ingredients to make ham salad when they want to make chicken salad. Once they get the right ingredients, their final product should be a good one.... Or at least we all hope.
