Lining up as a TE?
Yeah, that entire year the offense looked rusty every game, so the Sugar Bowl shouldn't be any different.
I'm sorry, but when even Michigan fans (and a couple players) are like "I have no idea how we won that game. You guys owned us up and down the field." I chalk that up to shit luck, not terrible coaching, or an ill-prepared team.
Didn't think I could be more pissed about that game; then I remembered David Wilson's breakaway run AWAY from the endzone.
Lots of great posts here. Duke lost their OC to Florida (I'm so sick of the SEC...). I realize that their HC has a lot to do with their Offense philosophy, but how it's executed will be affected by who the new OC is. So, their Offense will change some next year (in addition to player changes).
Loeffler does like Ford and we have the makings of some real good QB competition this coming Spring. The pro style QBs we are recruiting will reap benefits - and we'll have a backup with the same style which can only keep the system smooth when the inevitable injuries come. The lack of a similar backup has plagued us for a while.
Patience is tough, VT had been knocking on the door after 1999, then the past few years have been tough.
I applaud Logan Thomas as a person and tough competitor, (that Jack dump was awesome!) but I am glad the Thomas experiment is behind us. I really see him as a great TE in the Pros. I know we all wish him luck at the next level.

I totally forgot about that fake FG play. They also scored on a 3rd and long up for grabs throw. We were in the red zone 6 times and got 1 TD. There was one of those infamous roughing the punter free first downs resulting in a score. And so much more.
We gift wrapped that game for them.
Let's also not forget that we couldn't even score from the 10 yard line after they muffed the punt, that's tough to watch.
I think we were evenly matched with UCLA. Logan hit Cline with maybe his best pass of the season and then it went downhill from there. I really think Lefty loves to use the TE over the middle of the field/ attack the seams with these huge TE's. If cline doesn't go down I think we have a lot of success with those throws all game and then it opens everything else up. Logan going down was huge and it really showed that even though Leal was taking backup snaps that he is not anything close to LT3. Honestly I think #HokieNation as a whole was in a state of comatose as we saw Logan lie motionless on the field.
After that we never were able to get back, you never know what watching that live by the players does to them. To see their leader dish out a huge run then be clocked by an illegal hit. I bet it puts things into perspective and I'm sure even the coaches were like uhhhh facckkk what do we do now. Hence the snaps under center.

I'm not entirely certain that's all on Beamer, though. I can think of more than a few bowl games we lost because of bad plays by one or two people. Georgia comes to mind...we were winning that game, and 4 turnovers by our QB within 20 yards of the endzone we were defending turned that game around.
I'm reminded even of the NC game against FSU. We were winning that game, lost 3 key defenders to injury and a key offensive player, and things turned around.
The past couple of years have seemed a little lackadaisical, though. Not sure what's going on...but luck is a bitch sometimes. Sometimes everything goes your way. Sometimes everything goes against you. We seem to be one of those "everything goes against you" teams. Save one muffed punt return, we didn't have anything go right for us in that game. I mean, how do you throw a 15 yard unnecessary roughness flag for that hit, and then not call it targeting? "It was a clean hit" Well, if it's a clean hit, how's it unnecessary roughness?
Anyway, I digress. I'd love to actually start winning our bowl games more often than not, but luck never seems to extend us the courtesy.
Is there water in El Paso? More likely to hear a rock climbing accident.
If TG leaves, can we just hire Macho Harris to be DB's coach?
If Leal is the guy next year that means Lefty will be playing three different QB's in his first three years with the program. That's not really a recipe for success, nor is it good for a new OC trying to implement a system. Also, I honestly believe that the OLine will be better in 2014 than it is in 2015, so breaking in a new QB (like Ford) under 2014's line would IMO be preferable.
This is a kid who went to a program knowing he would never play in a bowl game his entire college career. Do you think a coaching change is going to push him over the edge?
There are a lot of factors involved in a situation such as this. In no particular order and by no means comprehensive:
- Would a move to an NFL staff in the same position (as a position coach) be a step up, professionally? You could argue both ways. Some coaches value top level college coaching positions above the NFL, while others see NFL experience as significantly more important in one's development. Which leads to Point #2...
- Does TG see himself as a talent developer and value shaping young men, or does he ultimately see himself as a coach aimed at creating a dominant unit? Only Coach Gray can answer this question. In the NFL, you have egos and money to deal with. While college has a lot of variables that can be equally detrimental, some coaches thrive in an NFL lockerroom while others are completely turned off by the personalities and expectations. Sure, TG would have the opportunity to coach the likes of Darrelle Revis, but is that why he gets out of bed in the morning? It is a decision between coaching up a guy like Kam Chancellor to realize his true potential, versus maximizing the known talent of established vets and incoming youngsters, alike.
- What is TG's ultimate goal in coaching? What are his aspirations? Does he want to be a DC? A Head Coach? Where? NFL? At a BCS-Level College Program? If he wanted to, say, become the DC at Tech when Frank hangs 'em up - assuming Bud takes over or ultimately retires - would he and we be better off if he went to the NFL in the interim?
This is just a start, because like I said, there are a lot of factors at play. But with virtually all of them, the answers are subjective and ultimately only Coach Gray can answer them. Time will tell, but regardless of how it shakes out it would be a tough loss for the program. In the end, the defensive backfield is in a considerably better place now than where it was when he took over. #DBU
Tough to argue with the facts. We have as many BCS bowl wins as UCF and still have fewer than Boise State. We have missed chances to get big wins (Sugar Bowls against Michigan and Auburn both 3 point losses), missed chances to get big wins we should have had (Orange Bowl, Kansas, REALLY Kansas!?!?). And we don't close out games we dominated (Peach Bowl in 06, 21-3 lead at the half). There have been near misses, blowouts, and close calls. But VT is not a great team, we are a good team, but not a great team. If you want to look at the two biggest wins in the program over the last 10 years, we have a top 2 win against a conference opponent (one that was coming off a national title, but still a CONFERENCE opponent we play every year) and then a BCS win over a tepid Cinci team. Thats it and thats not much. We do carry a stigma with our horrendoes record in bowl games and against top 5 teams and there is really no defending that. Just be happy that we are trying to scratch and claw our way through a very competative sporting landscape.
Could also be a big boost for the program to have someone that will be looking for reasons to bring Hokie defensive players to an NFL roster although where the balance is on that versus not having him probably leans to the negative especially in the short term.
We definitely looked rusty early on in that game. UCLA came to play and winning that game was important to them. It made me wonder if Beamer has shifted back to the bowl game is a reward mentality. He got away from that way of thinking after losing to Georgia and then Kansas (both games we should have won). Starting with Cincinnati, bowl games became business trips. Anybody hear any jet ski stories from El Paso?
One school recruits in the richest football talent heavy state in one of the largest cities in the country as a backdrop with a school rich in national championships in all sports. The other recruits to Blacksburg, Va and has put the tiny town on the map. Switch Frank and Mora and you could argue that UCLA would be much better and VT would cease to exist.

That was fat Frank who kept around sub-par coaches for way too long. We now have skinny Frank who just turned over his entire offensive staff in the last couple of years. Beyond that, I think the decision isn't Beamer's, I think its Loeffler's.
The thing that made me mad the most was how many times they kept showing the hit. Then they showed Cumwalt's head and it was gashed like a helmet to helmet hit would do. It was awful, I muted it at halftime and couldn't stand the arrogance that the SEC network decided to show our team. It was like they were trying to say ohh go to VT if you're a walk on because they will take you.. Instead how about show that Jack Tyler is an ALL ACC LB and remember that guy MV7 yeah he's a badass.
Made us look like a MAC team by the way they were talking about my team.
I kept screaming at the TV (yeah, I know they can't hear me) every time the announcers would call the wrong player. "That hit by Jarrett" (play actually made by Facyson)..."Mangore did a pretty good job on that run" (You mean Mangus?)
The sad thing is, I don't know that ESPN announcers would have done any better, as I've heard them screw up names and stuff earlier in the year. I would love to have a job as an announcers for football on any station (at least for college), because I could screw everything up, praise bad players, fluff up things that aren't even on or accurate, and still get paid some enormous amount of money. They could probably pick up a couple hobos sitting out front and pay them in sandwiches who would do a better job than what we got.
Only 10?
idk if anyone heard/watched Lefty's post game presser but he looked about as upset as ever. He clearly was in shock for how Leal played, yes his language made it sound like he was ok but those facial expressions said another thing. I think its 100% clear that Leal WILL not be the starter.
What is Beamer suppose to say oh yeah the guy thats coming in in 3 weeks he's going to be the starter, lol. No way that's the fastest/hardest slap in the face to Leal and Beams isn't that kind of guy. I will imagine it going something like this, first few weeks goes by then they have a talk and Leal is told look we are moving in a different direction at QB Lefty hand picked his 3 guys and its going to be a battle so you better strap in and enjoy another 10 win season.
WHY THE HELL DID THEY HAVE TO DO A 360 SPIN AROUND THE PLAYERS WITH THE SKYCAM BEFORE EVERY PLAY?! THEN THE LINES WEREN'T ON THE FIELD. DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MUCH I DRANK? IT WAS LIKE I WAS PLAYING DIZZY BAT WHILE TRYING TO WATCH THE GAME. LET ME OFF THIS RIDE!
