These Hokies will be missed. We made do with countless injuries, but exacted revenge on Pitt, UNC, and Miami. There were some painful and puzzling losses too (perhaps most of all Maryland), but overall more highs than lows. Going into the postseason with a record of 8-4,we've already had a better season than 2012. The defense was simply one of our best ever. The new offensive coaches give us reasons for hope in the future. Finally, Logan Thomas, even with all the adversity this year, kept tearing up the Hokie record books.
I'm damn proud of these Hokies, and they should be proud of themselves!
But the Hokies are within one game of Duke in the ACC Standings. Duke finished 6-2, VT 5-3.

Second best coach the Hokies have ever had. Thank heavens they were able to replace him with someone that wanted to lose just as bad.
"Better losses" are still losses though. There is nothing impressive about losing to a team regardless of how close the final score is. Teams should be getting credits for wins rather than losses. That's part of what has really messed with the system lately, and its 100% the reason why they were able to have the SEC rematch a few years ago.

a bowl game can bypass a team in the selection process only if the two teams in question are within one game of each other in the overall ACC standings.
It was put in place specifically to protect a team like Duke from losing their deserved place. We could still go before Miami though.

As a VT fan, I want the best possible bowl game, of course. I just don't know what all goes into it behind the scenes... there's probably things that could help Duke overcome not bringing enough fans. For one, all of the tickets aside from the team allotments are already sold. If Duke didn't sell their entire allotment, the remainder would surely get scooped up by SEC fans. Politically, there could be some pressure from Swofford to get Duke in there, but maybe the CFA bowl won't care anymore since they're moving up in prestige with the playoff starting next year.
As for GT, I seem to remember them securing the 2008 CFA bid prior to the ACC Championship game, which would have put them in the game ahead of the Hokies had we lost the ACCCG that year. Of course, it all worked out for us but we could have been dumped for GT so there's some precedent for that.
Miami, I agree, there's no way CFA takes them over other options. I think in a head-to-head match-up vs. Miami, we are better bowl prospect for any of the bowls with the exception of the RAB... and in that one, we're probably a toss-up with them cause I doubt they have a ton of fans who'd even make the drive to Orlando. :/
If I were guessing probabilities for the CFA's selection, I'd rank it as Duke -> VT -> GT -> Miami. I wish I were confident that VT would travel as well or better than Duke this year, given the disappointment of the last two seasons.
I can't see Duke being picked for the Chik-Fil-A Bowl. They don't bring enough fans with them. They won't pick GT because it's in Atlanta, and Miami has no fans. So when choosing between VT and Duke I think they pick VT. Not trying to be a homer, just looking at the facts. I think if we do fall past there we end up in the Sun Bowl.
Playing UCLA would be nice, I think that would be a good matchup. But Hundley is our kryptonite this year, mobile QB and all.
Playing Louisville would be nice, Bridgewater vs Fuller. If we played an SEC team, Ole Miss would be a good match up. Georgia.

These are the 5 teams that I think have a chance against anyone. From what I've seen this year, these are the top five teams in the nation.
That doesn't mean that I don't think OSU is good. They just feel like Oregon Part II, a team that appears to out-talent lesser competition but has trouble against a stout opponent. I think Michigan State will beat them next week, and then we'll be talking about, "Well how good WERE they, really?".
I almost put OkSt in here. But that loss to WVU is just abysmal.

My rationale -
* FSU should have no trouble beating Duke and will be in the NC Game. If by some chance they lose, the Florida football world will collapse, and the BCS will be thrown into complete chaos.
* If Auburn beats Missouri, they will have beaten #1 Bama and #5 Missouri in back-to-back games. That should be enough to get them into the NC Game, especially if tOSU loses to Michigan State.
* If Missouri beats Auburn and tOSU loses to Michigan State, I think Missouri could find themselves in the NC Game.
* The highest-ranked team tOSU will face this year is Michigan State. If they win, and Auburn loses to Missouri, I believe that will be enough to push tOSU into the title game. If tOSU loses that game, they're out of the NC Game.
* Could Bama find themselves in the title game if FSU, Auburn, and tOSU lose this coming weekend? Stranger things have happened.
The upcoming slate of final games should be very entertaining!
Bowl selections are always a crapshoot of the best teams available mixed with the preference of the particular bowl that is selecting. It's never the most "deserving" team that gets picked for any particular game, unless it's by happenstance.
Don't forget that overall records have nothing to do with anything besides Bowl & BCS at-large eligibility. After the BCS makes it's selections, the only thing that matters is ACC record... and the one-loss rule is in play, which means that any team within one loss of the eligible team with the most wins could be selected by the bowl who's picking.
Unfortunately, I think VT ends up in the Sun Bowl, but individual bowl preference will mean the world:
- If FSU/Clemson both make the BCS, Duke/VT/Miami/GT are all eligible for CFA
- If Duke/FSU both make the BCS, only Clemson is eligible for CFA
- If FSU only makes the BCS, only Clemson/Duke are eligible for CFA
- If Duke only makes the BCS, only FSU is eligible for CFA
After the CFA makes it's selection, if not VT, then I think the RAB is going to pick Miami due to proximity. Duke cannot fall below the Sun Bowl, so if they are not picked for the CFA or RAB they would fall to the Sun... but if they do go to Atlanta, then VT is going to be the best on the board and probably go to El Paso. (barf)
In reality, all of the ACC's bowl eligible teams could be picked ahead of VT except for Pitt & Maryland, but I think VT falls no farther than the Belk Bowl.
