Turning the page......Leal vs. Bucky vs. Motley vs. Ford in '14?
Considering the remedial lessons he's had to focus on with LT (mechanics, read progression), is it fair to discount this season as an indicator of Loeffler's future success as a VT QB coach? Is there reason for concern moving forward with SL's recruits under center?
Alright so here's the deal, according to 247 sports, Tim Settle and DeShawn McClease both said they had an awesome time at VT over the weekend...Brandon Lee said the L didn't affect him, and put a video of enter sandman on his instagram. It looked like he had an awesome time in Blacksburg this weekend (who doesn't).
Anyone who thinks one game will turn off recruits doesn't see the big picture and is being a prisoner of the moment.
There were a couple times I forgot a play was going on because I was lost in watching Dadi fire everyone up. Kid is nuts. Gayle was spot on in saying that once he gets the techniques down, he will be a complete terror.
I have thought all along, if Loeffler develops trust in Cline and the receivers to block on the edge, they should be in three wide, one TE or two wide, one tight, one Hback (Rogers) and run zone stretches with play action. I think it spoke to Loeffler's trust level when he was running away from Cline when the Hokies had early success running the stretch play against Duke. Also, Benedict played really well Saturday, but Gibson gives them the ability to seal the end and get that stretch play out wide to the right. McLaughlin did a great job when they went left on Saturday, and Benedict had a real nice effort on one play. We will do a detailed review on the film tomorrow.
7) Best desert to fish for? Well, I love the taste of fresh grilled wahoo with some mango salsa and cuban black beans.
On a scale to 1-10, how much better/worse is the offense from last year? Is there a noticeable difference between Lefty and O'Cainspring?
What did you think of the 3rd and 11 playcall/execution early in the game? I haven't watched any replay of it, but at the time I wondered why we went for the endzone instead of yards. If Beamer didn't trust Journell from that distance, why not make it a shorter kick? Or if he viewed it as 4 down territory regardless, why not make it 4th and manageable? I'm mainly curious about the play design: did Logan force a long throw, or were there no shorter routes?
Thanks for doing this French
Lemon meringue or key lime?
In your opinion, how much of the playcalling would you say is Loeffler trying to be "cute?"
An honest/objective ceiling for this team?
4) Line play (probably techique as well) - what is our best blocking scheme/play for the OL talent we have? It looks like we call the majority of our running plays as slow-developing, long-reaching blocking. Would it make more sense to do more quick-hitting plays so the linemen don't have as far to go and have to hold their blocks as long?
6/7) What's the best desert to fish for?
I prefer Wegmans. They have had some nice fresh pompano this year.
Which is a better place to catch fish this time of year, Food Lion or Kroger?
Still have to argue that it's a shitty way to make the call though. Part of me wonders if it was incomplete pass if the would have even called it. Some refs keep their hands on their flag the whole game just itching to throw it at anything. It seems that we got those guys on Saturday. They missed some calls that went our way as well so it goes both ways, but it seemed the calls hurt us more. I've already mentioned the PI on Ky in another thread. I definitely was screaming about the 2 block in the back calls. That's the second time this season that I can clearly remember a block on the shoulder/ribs of a player on a return and the refs calling a block in the back.
It's sometimes hard to tell in real time what's read-option and what's a designed play-fake to a QB run, and I don't have the stomach for watching replays of this year's offense. But if there's an element of optionality on any significant percentage of his runs, he might be his own worst enemy, he does not seem to like giving it up, and it's not like defenses aren't keying on him on the keeper to begin with.
Do you have a sense, french, of how much LT is calling his own number, and how much Loeffler is calling it?
That is a pretty awesome pick. I hate being late to things, especially games. I was actually about to get my ticket scanned right there on the north side as the plane was flying over. Glad I got to see the flyover, but sad I missed that awesome VPI formation. Still made it to my seat for Enter Sandman though.
Seems like his hook is the big problem right now - if I were his coach, I'd maybe start him on the left hash in practice, and have him do nothing but make kicks (from his comfort zone range, 30-40 yards) for a couple days, from that hash exclusively. Get him back into a comfort zone of a more straight-on approach with a gentle push. Then take a couple days to move him across the field gradually, hoping to re-establish a muscle memory of a less splayed-out angle of attack, intervening quickly if the motion breaks down and he starts bringing the leg across at a 10-degree angle again.
Basically anything I could do to shatter this existing routine of yanking his foot across the ball at the point of the kick.
I would also have kickers practicing on goalposts that were Arena Football dimensions.
I agree.. they missed on two long TD passes on overthrowns where receivers were running free in the first half. Could have been disastrous.
To be fair, when Logan was aggressive and going downfield (first half) those receivers were not open. As he made more mistakes, and as he got hit more and more in the running game, he stopped being as aggressive.
One thing I will be very vocal about tomorrow is the abandonment of the zone stretch running game. The Hokie OL blocked it so well and it was all ready to set up big plays in play action. And instead, Loeffler abandoned it for the read option and inverted veer. Thomas, Edmunds, and Coleman all had nice runs from that set, but in the process your quarterback took a ton of hits he didn't need to take. On pass pro, I think Logan was only hit once all day. But, he took a hit on every run. He will be more effective IF his running is a surprise and catches a defense off balance. Get him one on one with a safety where he has a couple of strides going. Using him as Bronko Nagurski has diminishing returns.
Journel was:
Involved in a drug related home invasion type incident in the off season resulting in suspension from a bowl game, forcing a kickoff specialist to kick field goals in a close game (loss to Mich).
Suspended in a game this season with the backup kicker going 0-3 (ECU).
Cleared out BW3 by spraying pepper spray
Maybe tell him- GROW UP and be repsonsible to your teammates and success will follow?
Have not booed him though, I just want him GONE
NICE!
To me, the long completion to Knowles encapsulates why Loeffler sticks by him and why someone is going to draft him.
It's a flat-out amazing throw. The ball travels about 60-65 yards in the air, from six yards deep in his own end zone to just past the fifty on the opposite hash, dropping on a dime right into Knowles' hands. There are only about thirty people in the world who are physically capable of doing that in a football game and he's one of them.
But I'm with you, I'm afraid he's just never going to be an above-average quarterback. His post-snap decision-making is just so, so questionable, and I don't see how it's going to get better. I know some people want to say O'Cain this and Stinespring that when it comes to Thomas' development, but he's a fifth-year RS Senior, he is what he is at this point. O'Cain coaching and Stiney coordinating was good enough to get Tyrod Taylor into the NFL and it was good enough to get Thomas to hype levels in 2011 that he hasn't since approached.
And PLEASE don't read that as me pining for the old staff - I'm not - but the honeymoon for the new guys sure came to a crashing halt on Saturday.
Yeah, the only sections that looked empty were the usual student ones in the south. Just seems like everyone would rather squeeze in like sardines, rather than sit/stand comfortably in their own section.
This is why Brooks Abbott leaving kind of hurt. Keyserling and even Cody look great in practice, but kicking in a game is completely mental and right now neither have 'it.' Both look great in warm ups and I hope one of the two can put it all together and be the man for the rest of the year.
Think of all the option teams that have played in history, especially the good ones.
EDIT: GT against us in '09.

It's not fair to compare any coordinator to Bud Foster.
