Henne is the backup to Blaine Gabbert in Jacksonville right now. He may end up being named the starter because Gabbert is atrocious.
I thought FAU was able to get a lot of pressure with just 3- and 4-man pressures. I feel like our d-line should really whoop up on ECU's front-five.
Except it does happen in conference play. At least among students. There were people leaving at the end of the first quarter of the Duke game last year. People left the Georgia Tech game early last year as well stating they had early class. (I had an 8am too, who cares). Hell, I saw people leaving the Miami game in 2011 at halftime when we were up 21-3 or whatever it was. This isn't just an FCS or weak opponent phenomenon. That's why people are already pointing out the issue. It happens at all games. Maybe not the max exodus that it is happening against weaker teams, but it's still happening. And its becoming more and more rampant. Hell, even 4 years ago the fans managed to hang around for the CMU blowout and the second half of ECU. And that was AFTER the JMU debacle. Those teams are similar to the Duke's and the Marshalls, etc, yet the students were still sticking around.
First off, rankings do not matter to us at all this season. We are not going to be in national title contention and realistically unless you're #1 or #2 at the end of the year, it doesn't mean diddly what you are ranked.
We have no business being ranked this week. If I were a voter, I would look at a game against an FCS team as essentially a bye week for a team unless they lose or keep it closer than it should be. We were supposed to blow these guys away and we did, no news there.
We need to show people over the next two weeks that we are much better than a solid mid-major team. If we can do that and some things fall our way with other teams losing, then maybe we get ranked. I think we need to win out through at least GT for it to be a real chance though.
Miami shot up to #15 this week and good for them. It looks good for the ACC to have another ranked team up there. They are good this year but they are not "back" yet. To me, they still have to win the ACC for anyone to take that program as a serious title contender again.
But yeah, to reiterate, it doesn't matter, especially this early in the year. As long as we play to our potential, we'll be in the running for the Coastal and possibly another ACC title.
I could be wrong, but I believe that there's no helmet audio allowed in college football like you see in the NFL (which is what that green dot on the back of QB helmets signify, as one member on the field on each team is allowed a headphone). That is why all college teams implement either the pictures/cards/hand signals/numbers system from the sideline to relay plays and formations out to the field. It looks like Grimes wears a headset as he gets the play from Loeffler from the booth and a number is signaled out to Logan, of which is the corresponding play on his wrist. We used to do hand signals from the sideline (2 dummy signals, 1 real signal), but I'm willing to bet that we switched to the number/wrist method to prevent signal stealing (a hot topic from the Clemson games in 2011). Or maybe it's Loeffler's preferred method.
Also, IIRC, when I took a class at VT a few years ago with Paul Torgersen as my professor, he had John Beilein come in and he gave us a quick overview on how signals are done at least from the defensive side. One person in the booth counts the number of tight ends and RB/FB the opposing offense has in the huddle and relays it down to the sideline via number form (ie: 21, which means 2 TE and 1 RB) to Bud. From there, he considers down, distance, and film study as to what formation and coverage would be best for likely plays, as well as what blitzes he wants. He and whoever else then signals it out to the field to be executed. That's a rough summary of how VT relays the defense, at least as of 2010.
Gotta love ducks fans: All my extended family is from Oregon and loves the ducks. Problem is it's a lot of passion without actual football knowledge. That duck fan probably doesn't even know who Frank Beamer is.... You see his mind has been erased by the constantly playing of:
DISCLAIMER: watching this video might make you do violent things.
Couldn't have said it better myself. Basically what I was trying to say but I may have been more defensive about it.
Since the RB depth is Edmunds, Coleman, Caleb (or something to that extent) I could see Chris Mangus being a lethal weapon in the return game.
Henne is an NFL starter.
I agree completely!!!!! It's still hard to tell exactly where we are in our passing game.....given the two teams we've faced so far.
Yeah, if you aren't sneaking bourbon in already you are doing it wrong.
Well, I'm certainly no expert but I've heard/read/seen that it goes like this on some teams. If the OC in the booth like ours he'll call the play down via a number to someone on the sideline (I see Grimes and Logan talk alot) and then from that person on the sideline to the QB. The QB then looks at the number on his QB wrist guard and the play is there. I think that is how we do it based Logans use of wrist band and talking to Grimes on the sideline before running out to the field. Once on the field the QB can listen via audio from the sideline what the play is. I could be wrong though. Other teams use a bunch of pictures and number to call an offensive play. I think our D uses a number system and hand and arm signals unless the opposing team is running no huddle which basically takes the DC out of the equation. Again, I don't know this to be true for VT, it's just a few things I've picked up from t.v. I'm sure someone here can answer truthfully.
Alternate universe reality....Richmond coach Mike London saves all three timeouts and ices NCST kicker. The kick, however was good.
Have to agree The Program > Varsity Blues
Thanks for your service and for the reminder that the stuff we get all worked up about here is because great men such as yourself sacrifice for our privilege.
one of the hoos went and got a security person and a cop(!)
They went down and got London off the field?
Can't confirm whether this is true or not, but I think Bud is trying to put his playmakers on the field, especially against spread teams where you need more coverage skills. Kendall and Facyson > Trimble.
So is Bud doing all of this to avoid having Trimble on the field as much? It seems that these fronts all are without the Whip on the field, with Jarrett or Kendall replacing him as a nickel or a rover up near the line.
I see Brandon Jacobs and Willis McGahee are being looked at. Having Jacobs on the roster again would be interesting.
I think Chuck Clarke has passed Frye on the depth chart
If he doesn't get there it is an incompletion, that ball was overthrown
Hopefully culminating with a big win in Charlotte, over the Clemson Tigers!
Let's be honest: We haven't done anything.
That's not that big of a deal. I thought this season would go like it has, lose to Bama but find some good things then disappear from the spotlight for a few weeks only to reappear on a Thursday night in Atlanta. It's fine, we need to get better.
Be patient. We'll be heard from before this season is up.
Yeah, I can't really blame him for benching David Wilson last night. But I really hope he protects the ball better, and lives up to his potential.

The more I watch Miami play, the more I just don't know what to expect for when we play them. If we were to play tomorrow, we would be matched strength on strength with our D vs their O and their horrid D vs our less than refined O. My gut says that we would win that matchup because of our running game because UF shut Miami down while Driskel handed the game to the Canes. With this game being in November, I sure as hell hope our offense is clicking by then and their defense is still struggling.
