A couple of quick thoughts on comparing '13 to '04:
1. It's worth noting that even as a senior, Randall didn't become the BR we remember until the GT game. Remember that pick-6 he threw against WVU? Abysmal. He used to do that stuff all the time. But, then, he stopped and closed out his senior year in legendary fashion.
2. The ACC competition in '04 stunk. Brock Berlin was the best QB we faced all year in conference. We drew as easy of ACC schedule as possible this year, but still, the QB play is markedly improved.
3. We can be a lot better this year offensively as we were that year. Better RB's, better OL, better coaches.
ESPN, stay with broadcasting and stay out of manipulating the "playing field"! How much are they paying players to attend top tier schools so that they can hype big game match-ups?
Good Lord, I did terribly...
Wake Forest
Miami (I want them ranked when we steal their lunch)
Oregon by far
Georgia (we need some sunshine here)
Oklahoma because I never pick WVU for anything
Michigan (even though Danny Coale caught the ball, at least Michigan's LBs don't make up their girlfriends)
Sam Rogers wasn't born. His parents went to the hardware store one Saturday to buy a sledgehammer, and the rest is history.
And when I say "history" I mean the most epic tale of glory known to mankind.
Agreed, trying to make smoke where there is no smoke. It sounds completely made up, but if it had any element of truth, VT (FB) would never admit to something like that. He didn't even name the team that was proposed to replace AL.
Talk about scrounging for a controversy. lame!
I can understand why ESPN would want a different team in that game. Just look at the pregame build up. Nobody was giving us a chance so most people were just saying Bama was gonna win and probably didn't watch the game. Bad ratings means less money.
ESPN is a business, they're not in the business of making us happy they're in the business of making money. I hate the way they broadcast sports and I don't think they're that good at it, but they're a damn good business that was doing what they had to do in order to get bigger ratings.
Let's Go!
Did Daryll Tapp also knock down some passes?
I actually do not mind that ESPN is trying to get the most out of each game. If we want to be a part of that, we need to win. Pure and simple.
What really angers me is this: http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/9175735/louisville-cardin...
The Cardinals also had an outside shot to open the season against reigning champion Alabama in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta.
Alabama will play Virginia Tech, but the Hokies considered withdrawing from the game if quarterback Logan Thomas left early for the NFL draft. Louisville would have replaced Virginia Tech, but Thomas returned for his senior season.
That's an ESPN insider trying to make it look like VT is thinking about backing out when ESPN was the one who initiated the entire thing.

Amen!!! I HATE reading the comments on TSL, I'd like to revoke their fandom and let them go become WVU fans where they would fit in.
For me, my displeasure with special teams began in 2008 when ECU blocked our punt, which cost us the game. I was there, sitting with ECU fans, and barely escaped with my life. Beamerball should be returning this week with veterans.
I got screwed on this deal too. I made reservations at a hotel for all the home game weekends just after the schedule came out. It was at regular rates and did not require a deposit. Their web site had not been updated yet for screw you rates and deposit requirements. I planned to stay two nights anyway, but at the time of booking there was no requirement. When I got my credit card bill a couple weeks later it showed charges for the first night of all my reservations. I called to complain and they wouldn't refund the deposits. I couldn't afford to spring for the rooms when the games were still 6 months away. Ended up having to cancel reservations for all but one weekend, for which they "graciously" decided to refund my deposit. I understand the financials of their situation. There are way too many rooms around for normal weekends and too few for football/graduation weekends. Just wished they would honor their terms and not change them retroactively.
Great point! - why does a student have to sit out a year for switching programs, but a TV network can switch up a game (that can take years of planning in some cases) and everything's OK. Double standard for sure! GO HOKIES!
That's more than all our FBs had the last two seasons combined (Joey Phillips had 2 yds on 3 carries in '11).
Great preview as always fellas.
I've been reviewing consultant reports all day, so forgive me...Grammar Police:
Foster believes in his Whip position and prefers to leave them on the field, but the past couple years he has had to be more practical than pragmatic.
Practical and Pragmatic are synonymous. I would suggest "idealistic" instead of pragmatic.

The two-night minimum and expensive hotel prices are often mentioned as an impediment to attending games. The reality is that one can stay 60 to 90 minutes away and avoid both of these pitfalls. It is obviously more fun to stay in the burg, but if youre driving 6 8 hours, a stop-over in Hillsville, Wytheville, Roanoke, etc, puts you in a position to be able to get to your tailgate at a reasonable hour and save significant cash.
I am fortunate enough to be less than 3 hours away and have family less than 90 minutes away, but I would definitely go the stay nearby route before dropping $400+ on a hotel for two nights.

downvote me! my giggle was worth it!
me too, i find weather fascinating. i told my wife when we retire i'm gonna be a weather watcher for whatever local news is near where we live. she told me i was a dork.
This kind of bothered me the first time I saw it too. First, ESPN should be in the business of broadcasting games, not deciding who plays in them. Second, the smugness of ESPN is horrible. Some executive in Bristol (who has probably never watched a VT game) probably saw that we were 7-6 last year and decided that he would help out poor little VT who obviously has no chance of competing with Alabama. They even had another opponent already picked out for us. I'm sure that rematch with Bowling Green on ESPN3 would have been great!
You're right though, ESPN wanted a bigger team to go against the "unbeatable" Alabama to draw in more viewers. I really hope that one day NBC Sports or Fox Sports 1 can get their act together to seriously compete with ESPN.
I very much applaud Coach Beamer for keeping Bama on our schedule.
Who is responsible for scheduling games? ESPN or the colleges? Need some balance between schools and commercial interests. We are going down a path towards for-profit schools. In that scenario the athletes lose. NCAA? Who's that?

Oh, Brandon Pace...
