Really? The first time or two DJ had the ball, I seem to remember him looking down field, seeing two or three Alabama players coming at him, then lowering the shoulder and trying to get a yard. My first impression was that he was acting fearlessly when he had the ball in his hands and his head up, but then he seemed to cower a bit when preparing to catch.
I clicked on this thread, and this is pretty much what I got out of it:

Let's not forget that we have youngsters on special teams. With the influx of veteran leadership and talent we're about to get, the special teams will improve immediately. Had we had this in place for Alabama, which, despite injury risk, I think we should have had, we would have had a much better performance. With the way our defense was playing, it may have made the difference between the score we saw and the close game the defense gave us.
I'm glad Beamer is still coaching special teams and I do think he's still a good coach at it (clearly I mean did you see Hughe's punts?!) but I do think special teams as far as coverage is mostly an intensity and energy thing; (and their is naturally some strategy, but I dont think Beamer is to blame for that at all) I'm not saying the Frankanator doesnt have some intensity to him however I do think that Shane could add some...spunk so to speak... and I wouldn't mind him lending a hand either, I'm also pretty excited that little beamer will still be able to handle special teams once big beamer heads off into retirement (or preferably the AD position)
DJ was tentative all game vs Alabama starting from the very first time he touched the ball on the pitch. 100% or not, it'll take him some time before he fully trusts his knee enough to initiate contact.
Joel Caleb plays angry (does anyone remember his showing in the T-Time drill), is explosive, and will enjoy delivering the blow from the running back position. I'm looking forward to seeing him out there.
Professor Carroll is spearheading the new program (he's an AWESOME guy who I will be working with on forecasting until I get my feet under me a little bit better)
I think that this is a great idea! Please keep the weather reports coming. And, the very best to you in your studies.
The dinosaurs were not killed when an meteorite impacted the Earth. It was Sam Rogers' arrival in his intergalactic pod.
I completely agree. College ball is a big difference. And Coles has been timid in attacking contact which is surprising given his size and usual physicality. With only one game under his belt this season, I'd chalk it up to being nervous about his knee and how it holds up. Hopefully he settles in though and gets back to his old style of playing. I don't think DJ should be taking handoffs and running up the gut, but pitches and screens taken from the LOS like an H-Back isn't a bad fit for him. While I like the idea of having Caleb back there and DJ still out wide to put more strength on the field, I'm not against DJ having that role as a RB/H-Back.
Well aware the old man is the coach. Tired of him looking like an old man with alzheimer's on the sideline. When was the last time we blocked a punt? Over the last two years (aside from the the criminal Jarrell) we have been punked in special teams. Everybody now uses the "swinging gate". But not us. Game has evolved. He hasn't. Let someone else run special teams
I don't know or really care, so I'll pick the Catholics over the Demons

I'm taking Tha-Dux, but BCO, I wouldn't bet on an absence of smugness, after all the university is on the west coast.

Noted, but playing RB in high school and playing RB in college are two completely different things.
When it's 1st and 10, you need a ball carrier who's willing to attack a defender in order to gain an extra 2-3 yards. This will keep the offense ahead of the chains; 2nd and 6 is a lot different from 2nd and 10. Coles may be capable of running with the ball in his hands, but he hasn't shown the every down toughness that's required of an option back.
Joel Caleb definitely has in the scrimmages. In my opinion.
I got you, +1 for balance

This week I am drinking some delicious

This is a good one but also one I've seen with Chuck Norris. (same for ones above) Original Sam Rogers Facts are more my cup of tea.
For example, did you know that David Wilson didn't actually catch that rabbit? Nope. It was running away from Sam Rogers.
or that,
Sam Rogers is never offsides. The line of scrimmage is too afraid of him and keeps moving.
they're maybe not as "good" as a near-Sam-Rogers experience, but like Christmas presents it's the thought that counts.
Coles is a fine athlete and has been very productive for Frank Beamer in the past, but acting as a runningback is not him at his best. His lack of experience in running towards contact, instead of away from it, caused him to needlessly stretch out both runs and get tackled for minimum gain. Someone with experience acting as a running back (like Caleb) would have been more comfortable cutting up field and picking up what yardage is available rather than always looking to hit the home run.
No offense to any of the writers here, but DJ did play RB in high school. While he was only in Division A, he was still an all-state RB. I realize he's been out of that game for a while, but in my opinion, he still has the traits of a RB. He operates well in space. He may not be fast, but he used to be pretty shifty for a big guy and could lay some lumber on tacklers. His struggles may just be a result of gaining weight and a lack of exposure to the position for 4 years, but he does have history at the position.
Sorry, fat fingered on my phone
Only if Sam Rogers allowed it to...

I remember in 1995 (my junior year), we opened the season with two losses. The first to Boston College, the game was close, but I remember watching stone handed receivers drop a bunch of balls, including some critical ones at the end that kept us out of scoring positions. Final score was 14-20. Then we lost a hangover game 0-16 to Cincinnati (that game sucked so bad...one of the only times I've left early...just couldn't watch the garbage on the field that was VT football that day).
Then, we beat the Miami Hurricanes for the first time in the next game (I still wonder where the hell did that come from?) The thing is...those prior losses, the D played good. For the Miami game, we got enough offense together (and sort of special teams...the holder was messing up and we missed something like 4 or 5 FG's against Miami that day).
Seeing us against 'Bama, it's all stuff that's correctable that went wrong. We've got games against a couple of opponents that should be overmatched. So...by the time we're back in Atlanta for the game vs. GT, I'm actually very optimistic that our team will be better, and I'm looking forward to the season.
Last year, it wasn't that our team was losing that bothered me. It was that the issues didn't look easily correctable. The game breakdowns on here, and elsewhere, it was obvious that there was something wrong at the foundation of the team. Bad coaching on offense, etc. We hadn't seen it that bad before (and come on, if we could eek out 10 win seasons with Sean Glennon behind those awful lines he had...Stiney had to have been doing something half right despite his faults). It was truely demoralizing. This year, so far, despite the loss, we see solid fundamentals behind the team. It's very encouraging.

If you're going to bash on a player the least you can do is spell their name right.
