He was benched during Spring Game. He threw 3 interceptions including 2 pick 6's. Leal looked so much better. So the coaches benched Logan.

Maybe it was the receivers that made Logan look good.
So Leal, working with the same receivers Logan's working with now, will be better? People want to point to last game where that stat sheet read 5-26, but few people actually look into those attempts to see what happened. Luckily, members of TKP community have and saw that Logan had 5-6 throwaways, and 9-11 dropped passes depending on how you look at it. That leaves us with between 4 and 7 passes that could be considered "bad." Is it Logan's fault DJ gave up on his route? Is it his fault that Knowles couldn't catch a pass that hits him in the hands, knees, waist, numbers, or facemask? He isn't continuing to "throw passes into the dirt." He hit receivers. He stood tall in the pocket and took hits so he could make a better throw instead of losing form to avoid a hit. How would Leal put up better stats in those circumstances?
I cannot remember Logan being benched at all when a game was still in doubt. Beamer & Co. have had plenty of chances to put Leal in there if they thought he would be a better starting QB....
But they haven't and that should be enough to tell anyone that Logan is the guy for the rest of this year.
Because too many Hokie fans give far too much credit to organizations like ESPN who have "expert analysts" who are "credible" sources and say things like "Logan Thomas really struggled against Alabama completing only 5-26 passes" when they don't actually watch the game to see that a majority of those missed passes were dropped by the receivers. Anybody who has half a sense about what's going on in football game and ACTUALLY WATCHED that game would recognize that Thomas, for the most part, actually looked a lot better than last year, but his stat sheet was pretty poor as a result of receivers not stepping up. Too many Hokie fans think HD/The Neck knows what she's talking about.
I think Teller is a left tackle and McLaughlin will move to right tackle. Mitchell, Petit, and Taylor will get looks inside.
Ekanem will be playing opposite of Dadi Nicolas. Ekanem is a stud end. Nicolas plays the defensive end position.
Xavier Burke (and hopefully Ryan Izzo) will be in the tight end pipeline.
If Jefferson qualifies, there is no way they redshirt him next year. They don't have enough depth at corner.
Fisher will be a rover.
I am still hoping to see Nnadi and Walker at DT. As impressed as I was in Settle, I think he goes to Alabama (he plays a true 3-4 end and doesn't really do the kind of things that Bud Foster requires his tackles to do.)
100% guarentee that Phillips and Harrison play wide receiver, and I would not be shocked to see both beat out Knowles and Stanford. Phillips is outstanding at route running and getting seperation, while Harrison is an explosive breakaway threat (catch a 7 yard pass and break it) that they have lacked for a long time.
Funny, most people would see a player's stat line drop precipitously like that and be concerned.
That same argument could have been made in 2007 to keep playing Glennon and stick Tyrod on the bench, since Glennon played in 2006. We have no idea if Leal is good enough to win games. However Logan hasn't been good enough since Coale and Boykin left town. Maybe it was the receivers that made Logan look good. Maybe the hype from Kiper affected him. Maybe he's so preoccupied with proving he is a pocket passer that it is disrupting everything else. Maybe Whitfield wrecked his mechanics. Maybe O'CainSpring wrecked him beyond repair. I don't know the specific cause, only the effects.
Leal's going to be the heir apparent next season. If Logan continues to throw passes into the dirt at what point do we accept that it's time to make a change? This is especially true if the defense continues to be a car shredder. It's unfair to continue to saddle the defense with an offense consisting of punts, 3 yard runs and sadness. Hopefully it gets sorted out quickly.
Sorry if I'm not clear, first time publicly doing the Pick 6
Deacs cover but lose (close game down to the wire)
Canes hold on to their backness for a bit longer
The Ducks are mystified when London ices their kicker with 2 TO's with UVA down 30
Uga munches on some chicken and covers like that ice bag
_VU get the points but OU takes their W
Michigan over ND and covers
I don't hold the UGA bowl game result against Glennon. He was a freshman starting against a very good D-line with a coach that admitted to being clueless in that game. AND we had two starting O-linemen go down for good with injuries. Stiney admitted he had no idea what to do or what to call after that. If the coach didn't have a clue...how would a freshman QB who was having rushers on him after taking 2 steps back?
And we lost that ECU game because the whole team let down. Pass D couldn't stop anything, and the special teams let that block happen at the end. It was a lot more than just Glennon that went wrong that day.
59.8% completion, 19 TD, 10 INT...That was his stat line in 2011. What's your point? Leal has 2 TD on his stat sheet. What has he proven? Again, what makes anybody think that Leal is better than LT?
Lol and turkey leg for #BEATWCU signature
"I'm seeing a lot of Hokie fans call for Leal over Thomas. I completely understand there reasoning for it. But why?"
51.3% completion, 18 TD, 16 INT. That was Logan's stat line last year. He threw a bunch of INTs in the spring game, struggled in fall practices that were open to the public, then went 5-26. That's why.
Let them complain. Logan will never be benched.
He is the most talented QB we have on the roster.
Backup qbs are always the most popular player
Exhibit A: Alex Moran
'nuff said.
Wyatt Teller will be starting at RT.
Trey Edmunds will probably be in the NFL.
Love the post! People will miss Logan next year. I will admit I was sticking with Glennon even after the Georgia game (which he singlehandedly lost) until 2008 where on his first pass of the year for the second straight year he threw an interception to East Carolina and we lost - I was done with him then and I'm still done with him.
The Glennon exception aside, I have never given up on a player up to and including Marcus Vick.
I was serious, it still should have been caught but if you watch the video, Knowles has a step on the closest defender at Tech's 42, but 10 yards later at Bama's 47, Knowles has his weight back as he is slowing down and the defender has caught up with him. Here are the screen caps that I took for when I was making the same assertion in another post.
Knowles with a step on the defender:

Knowles slowing down so the ball can catch up to him:

As i said, Knowles should have made the catch, but didn't have good body position, because he had to slow down and wait for the ball. My thought is that he would have been better off turning around and trying to meet the ball at its highest point, instead of trying to catch it like it was out in front of him on a deep route. I had this incompletion as 50/50 between Logan and Knowles.
My comment to Mike Barber is that VT turning down a shot at Alabama would have resulted in open rebellion from the Hokie fans and donors. That would never stand, to the point that even suggesting it would be ludicrous (yes even for Jim Weaver). So clearly the idea wasn't VT's.
His story in the Times Dispatch seemed to indicate that the initial question was presented by CFA as a courtesy to Tech. If you read that one way it sounds like "hey, ESPN is pushing CFA for this other option but the CFA Bowl feels it's obligated to let VT make the decision." Which would mean that ESPN thought its better match-up was a fait accompli but they got slapped down by the CFA Bowl organizers doing the right thing.
That explains ESPN floating the story that VT was thinking of pulling out if Logan left, something that VT denies.
I've been developing the opinion that ESPN has grown too big for its britches, ever since they were balls deep in the conference re-alignment mess over the past few years. A "news" organization creating controversy and then reporting on it is too much for me to take. Throw in the Mike Leach nonsense with Craig "Totally could have killed five hookers in Houston" James, the Le Bron "Decision" show, anything Skip Bayless does, etc and I'm so over that network. I'm hoping that FS1 can really make a go at giving them a stalking horse to try and keep them honest.
Yes, totally a threat if Lefty uses him like that. I love the idea.
I agree.
From a recent 247 Sports Article discussing the variation in rankings between different recruiting services:
ESPN analysis: When you consider Harrison's size, you really gain an appreciation for his agility, speed and overall movement skills. Has great height and good bulk with very good playing strength and competitive speed. He possesses explosive reactions and quickness, especially for a tall, young athlete. Plays as a safety/corner hybrid and wide receiver, where he has more experience and a natural feel for the offensive side of the ball. Tough, hard-nosed competitor on both sides of the ball.
Last Thurs, FB was asked how he thought VT would fare against Goliath, Alabama ... he said 'we will be a better football team on Sunday' ~ 2 things: wise Frank couldn't have been more right and Big Bad Bama don't seem so Big and Bad anymore, do they? GO HOKIES
Also i think Javon Harrison will be at WR and not CB
Backup qbs are always the most popular player
Except tyrods years. I didnt know anyone who was calling for glennon or juju over him
When it comes down to it, I think that there are a lot of Hokie fans (and really, football fans of any team) who just don't understand the complexities of the game of football. The community here at TKP is a pretty obvious exception.
But IMO, that's why we see these knee-jerk reactions - most casual fans only see & comprehend a small percentage of what's happening on the field. I certainly fall into that category at times considering I've never played organized football, but I've always been an observant sports fan and tend not to overreact like many do. The point is, when you have a large majority of your fanbase that isn't versed in a nuanced sport like football, you get outlandish reactions.
Thanks to the staff here, I can say that I'm a much more informed football fan and enjoy the game a lot more than I did before I found the site.
Those meddling sons a bitches. I'm glad Frank told them thanks but no thanks. Our team will be better for playing Bama.

+1 for 'we all lose'. BCO, recommend giving Leonard a pass here if WF pulls it out...
