agreed. At UNC it has only been once with one fan. I just laughed because of his outfit. Other than that UNC fans have been amicable.
One word...Karma.
Just as soon as they announce that they are going to protect Jarrett by not having him return punts, he'll slip in a puddle of Gatorade on the sideline and break a bone.
If he is the best option, he needs to be out there. This team doesn't have enough hole cards to be holding back. Guns need to be blazin' from 60:00 to 0:00.
could end up being newsome
I wouldn't mind seeing JC back there. He is quick and shifty. Last year I wanted Jarrett back there but with the lack of depth in the secondary I am for not having a DB back there. If parker can catch it, put him back there or Mangus or Newsome. Someone that can make a play but will catch the ball first.
Me too! I can't believe ECU folks didn't get more play on here. My mom got her masters from ECU and my best friend is getting his masters from there currently. Hence, I've seen the Hokies play the Pirates live quite a few times.
Last time I was there in person for the absurdly hot, painfully boring 14-7 Hokie victory in Dowdy-Ficklen. Every time our backup QBs take ONE STEP on the field to signal in offensive plays, their fans would boo and scream, "HEY GET OFF THE FIELD, MAN! HEY REF, THESE GUYS ARE ALSO TRYING TO PLAY! THROW THE FLAG!" I'm not kidding you, I'm pretty sure 10,000+ people were chanting the same thing. I was so perplexed and still am to this day. Our backups, who are not wearing helmets and are obviously there to ONLY send in offensive plays, took one step on the field to signal in the offensive play and everyone wearing purple and gold began to absolutely lose their shit in unison.
After we won, I was walking out of the stadium and had people talk shit to me the entire way to the car. We even had someone chuck a beer bottle at our car from inside a house on our way out of Greenvegas.
I've truly never been so confused in my life...
Also, fuck Clemson. I keep reading on here how some of you encountered great fans there, but I've apparently never been so lucky. It's often the students that give the elders a bad name; however, that's not the case for my experience with Clemson people. There's always some 55 year old guy in stupid pants giving me the third degree for being a "jokie" fan. Did I mention fuck Clemson? If not, fuck Clemson.
Nebraska's got some great people. And, I don't share everyone's hatred for UNC, but whatevs. I've gotten lucky there I guess.
Hall got better as the year went along and absolutely put a clinic on during the last game of the season vs. the Cowboys. He can be good when he wants to. The Redskins cut him with the intention of resigning because he was due a large amount of money and the Redskins are still working with the collusion-salary cap penalties. Plus, if you know much about the Redskins, the secondary was the weak point and was addressed in the draft (because they had no money for free-agency) and they need any half-way-decent person back there. Hall scares me because he likes to make the big play, but he came back and cheapened his contract.
I'll probably go catch a game or two at Massaponax to watch Mihota. I'd go to the Chancellor/Massaponax game to watch Mihota against Steven Moss, but I'll be heading down to Blacksburg that weekend. I'll check in with what I see though. Unfortunately, there aren't that many prospects on our board in this district.
My vote goes to Carlis Parker and Mangus if they can show reliable hands. Realize that is somewhat opposite of French's advice, but I love the idea of having true threats back there (so long as they aren't irreplaceable elsewhere as is the case with Jarret). Without having seen either ever catch punts, which is admittedly a bit of an art that takes more than just athelticism, I think they would by far be our two best open field threats.
Would also have no problem with JC Coleman or Donovan Riley if we wanted to be a touch more conservative depending on game situation. Sounds like Caleb has bad hands so he would seem to be out.
Looking at this list I can see why my Dolphins aren't doing so great...No Hokies!
Bama mistakes were the only thing that kept us in the '09 game - botched punt coverage and throwing the INT deep in their territory gave us 10 easy points.
Sustained drives aren't our forte so if Bama eliminates opening game errors we are in for a long day.
I thought the Giants signed Marcus Davis?
EDIT: It looks like the Jets resigned him and placed him on the IR
A big key for us will be our red zone offense. I rewatched the Sugar Bowl against Michigan last night and we only converted one red zone touchdown all night. We DOMINATED Michigan in between the 20s, but once we got inside the 20, we came to an abrupt halt every time. Our clicking offense had to settle for field goals which lead to us getting beat by a couple of lucky jump balls that Denard Robinson (pathetic excuse for a quarterback IMO) connected on. If we are going to beat Alabama we have to convert those red zone possessions into touchdowns because Alabama WILL put up points on us. I know this will be the best defense we have had in recent memory but Alabama's physicality will be something we are not used to.
Maybe I'm an awful person for saying this so sorry in advance if this hurts anyone's feelings.
I think D-Hall is awful, I don't know why the Skins resigned him. He has the talent for sure and his career as a Hokie was phenomenal!!! But he just seems to have gotten way to cocky as of late and does nothing but hurt the Skins in key situations because he can't keep his mouth shut. I don't know how many times I yell "SHUT UP DEANGELO!!" during a game.
On a positive note, I hope Wilson has a great year and becomes a premier NFL back, he is so close and he definitely has the talent and the market to shine.
I didn't realize so many Hokies were fighting for not only roster spots, but active roles as well. Great read, Brian!
Yeah of course. They cant let the ENTIRE state of new jersey in, can they?
Tapp at OLB is odd. As much as I loved Deangelo that guy exemplifies risky CB play. He either gets a pick or is burned for 30 yards. Normally the latter. Worilds looked good in the first preseason game from what I saw. The Steelers never get a lot of pressure in the preseason since Lebeau doesn't really come up with his crazy blitzes yet.
So, I live in East Alabama. I'm having a pool (Above ground) put in this week. When I got off work yesterday I was wearing a basic Maroon shirt with "Virginia Tech" in orange letters across the chest. I go outside to check on the progress and the first thing I hear is "Man, you're going to be upset in a few weeks" I'm not a quick guy when it comes to come backs but I spit out "Nah, but we might upset ya'll" Feeling rather proud of myself all he did was snicker. He was a knowlegeable fan and we talked for some time. He gave us great respect and said even though our season last year ended the way it did he's not going in to this game thinking Bama has already won. He said if we haven't played in recent history then maybe but the 2009 game scared the shit out of alot of their fans and they've watched us ever since...like I do with Nebraska now. So, not all Bama fans are homers and I just figured I'd share this with ya'll. Perhaps it should be in the evaluations of other fanbases thread but here it is. #BEATBAMA
The Giants signed him immediately after the draft, but waived him. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/05/15/jets-claim-marcus-davis-...
You could probably just leave it at "knock him out."
OK, I confess. I was one of the people last year saying "Where is Jarrett?" because there was such a drop-off with Holmes. And you make a good argument here. I am inclined to agree with you and say, "Let's see what these other kids can do." But with that said, if and when there comes a point in time when we NEED a good return, then I still say put in Jarrett. See Gio Bernard vs NCSU in 2012.
Don't we all?
Giggty Goo!
Darn.....I guess we'll just have to go back to blocking punts!
No return men.....just put all of our best blockers 2 deep and release hell.
(One of the many examples of why I am not a football coach.)
I don't think Caleb is really the guy to have returning punts. While Caleb is a very dynamic athlete, he isn't the shifty speedster you'd like to see back there. IMO I think the job goes to either Mangus, Der'Woune, or possibly JC (Deon Newsome and David Prince will also be in the running if they don't red-shirt).
i guess some folks dont wanna admit that not all hokies are saints
That, the Chocolate Boch and the Holiday Porter.
Man do I love their Winter Seasonal pack

I went to several of Bucky's games last season and did a semi-live tweet session. I'm already planning on going to some Ocean Lakes and Oscar Smith games. Ill make sure to take notes
