I agree with all of French's points, but the glory days of Beamer Ball was when guys like Lee Suggs and Andre Davis were in on the punt block/return teams. Putting your best athletes in the best positions is what changes games, as seen in the return game by Jayron Hosley, Eddie Royal, and Macho Harris. It is certainly a huge risk in which the coaches have to decide how much they value the return game in regards to Jarrett's health, but I think we're a better team with him returning punts.

I don't recall the Skins having a bad perception, but I know that there are certain players who need to adjust their on-field attitude. If you ask me, D-Hall is starting to realize this because he is getting old and just got cut and resigned for a cheap price. I, too, cringe at the way Hall plays but as I said before. With the cap space, rookies on D, and the existing personnel...there isn't much else we can do. That being said, I don't think Hall is awful, just needs more discipline. The last half of last season is a testament to the secondary meshing and becoming better(not great, just better).

Don't worry about it man, I'm sure 99% of the people above have made errors before on the interwebs. When they do happen, it can become a cruel cruel world. Ask anyone that's misused your/you're before. Don't be discouraged from posting, I've learned A LOT on this site.

P.S. It is possible to edit posts

During the game it is difficult since the O-line has to set before a play. Also there is something to be said for developing chemistry. If O-line men constantly change positions, it can lead to insecurities.

I was thinking it was Grimes himself who said at the end of Spring practice that the starting 5 were pretty much known and we would spend August getting reps together.

I distinctly remember him saying he knew who the starting five were after Spring but wasn't announcing it. That's been the cause of my concern, that I remembered him saying we were further along than we appear to be today.

But it does make me feel a lot better knowing that Grimes is in charge and not Curt Newsome's cat.

When's the last time we had a notable injury from a punt returner returning a punt? I can't really think of any, or for that matter remember any in any type of football.

Having said that, I failed to read your last point in your first comment. I wouldn't mind subbing him against "less" competition. My argument was based on the fact that a punt return for a touchdown could change our entire season if it led to a win against Alabama.

yah look, I get what you're saying. But flip it around and look at it as if you had neither.

If you take Jarrett out of both positions Punt Returner and Safety, which is the greater unknown? It may take us a week or two to find a replacement for him to return punts, but there are plenty of playmakers with potential to do so. (magnus, parker, knowles, caleb, etc)

But take him out of safety and we have untested players commanding our entire secondary. That something that could kill us all season.

My family and I have a tradition of doing shots of American Honey whenever the Hokies score a TD. I got a handle of it for my Birthday, so our offense better get it together. Otherwise I'll just have to drink it to ease the pain...

Not sure if srs

I guess I was just pointing out the whole argument of getting hurt is based on ifs..

We have a known commodity in Kyshoen. If no one bests him in practice, i would play him.

Wait until this season before you judge McCarron. The dude had 10 seconds and a perfect pocket to throw from just about every time. ANY D1 quarterback can do what he did.

Can O-linemen be moved around based on match ups or different defensive schemes? I mean, I know they can but does it happen often? If so at least we'll be well prepared!

I live in NC and plan on going to some high school games this next year, I will keep you all posted for local prospects here, I saw Elijah wood (5 Star ND commit) play last year. I plan on getting a big VT flag and flying it at any local HS football game I go too( like the WSU flag at all the ESPN gamedays)

Michigan was one of the best red zone defenses that year but I think we still should have scored at least one more TD.

I would be glad to help out but I am a student at Tech and live in Radford so there aren't that many real prospects around here.

Risk vs Reward
Reward first. Maybe, maybe, he returns 3 or 4 in the season. Hopefully one in a big game that turns the momentum and seals a win.

Risk. He goes down with an injury and we have no captain in our backfield. Our thin depth at this position and corner mean Gray needs to do some serious shuffling to move someone more experienced in this position. Kyle Fuller perhaps gets moved and we are playing with possibility of two true freshman at corner. The secondary gets slashed and burned in a bend but not break game plan that we've seen before and loathe to return again. And things like the FSU game winning drive happens over and over.

No. I definitely would prefer someone else take punts. We have enough athletes for a star to emerge other than someone named Jarrett.

Adding to this, it is the preseason. Still plenty of time to get ready for the opening kickoff.

I think everyone has summed it up defensively...pressure, pressure, pressure. If McCarron has time to make all his reads and get the ball to their playmakers, we will be hurting (I'm sure everyone would say duh). Offensively, I just hope we 1) never give up on the run unless time is against us to keep them honest (under 2 min/4th quarter & down) 2)have our gameplan for taking what defense gives (underneath routes just getting 4 to 6 yards even) in a way that would lull their defense to sleep and then have a few big plays/play actions over the top ready. The Logan of last year wouldn't do this. He would force things thinking it was always time to make a big play. I think he'll be ready this time around. And of course limited turnovers, win or come close to winning the T.O.P. battle, and no big penalties.
