This means a bunch of things:
1. Barksdale and Eddie's minutes are going to soar, regardless of play.
2. We will see a whole lot more 3 guard play (Green, Rankin and Brown), but still no Johnston. I think it's safe to say that we've still seen the last of white lightning getting any major minutes.
3. The rebounding assignments are going to change, meaning Green and Brown will have to crash the boards, limiting the fast break as a result.
4. It's not a huge loss in terms of production, but the 7 man rotation is going to kill the guys in terms of energy.
5. Biggest question of all: What does this mean for Kid 'n Play's comeback tour?
LT has a lot to lose if he stays, but I hope he does, and I hope he plays like he did in 2011 under better coaching.
100% on Newsome? I sure hope you're right, but how can you be so confident?
Will Johnston isn't good enough on defense to earn the start.
McFarling basically highlighted the big problems we have pointed out on thekeyplay.com for the last two years. Stinespring (and O'Cain) are both copycats, not innovators. Copycats have two general faults. Either they lack conviction and jump on the latest new trend without ever fully implementing their first system, or, they hold stedfast to their first ideology without fully understanding or implementing that ideaology. The Hokies don't need an innovator, but they do need someone who will implement a system, recruit to it, and make sure it compliments Bud Foster's defense. I think that requires being the bully, controlling the clock, and complimenting it with vertical passing. Hokie football.
At the same time, Stinespring can not be fired. 2014 is a critical recruiting year in the Commonwealth. In the Norfolk/Hampton/Virginia Beach area alone, 2014 features the type of defensive line class that most SEC schools dream about. Andrew Brown (five star DT from Oscar Smith), Derrick Nnadi (high four star DT from Ocean Lakes), Ricky Walker (four star DT from Bethel), Jayln Holmes (high four star DE from Lake Taylor), Quinn Blanding (five star safety from Bayside), and WR Jamil Kamara (four star WR from Catholic-VA Beach) are all from the 757. With Vincent Mihota already locked in, and D'Shawn Hand a possibility, winning the war on three of these recruits would make for one hell of a foundation for future success.
Stinespring has leverage. I am 100% sure that Curt Newsome will not be back, and I have a feeling that we will see a new offensive staff with the exception of Shane Beamer. Newsome and Stinespring are the only 757 recruiters on staff, and Newsome only has responsiblity on Walker. Stinespring has built those relationships, and no other Hokie coach has a well established relationships in the Tidewater while Shane Beamer and Bud Foster have Richmond and northern VA on lockdown. Stinespring is critical, unless...
With all the coaching hires taking place I have been looking all over the place of the logical fit. There is no way Newsome and O'Cain are coming back. It just isn't plausible. Staff connections (Tony Franklin with Foster) have not panned out. Ricky Bustle, Fridge, and Kevin Rogers are out there, but I just don't buy that those hires, which we expect, are the correct path. I think the hire will suprise all of it, and with the 757 in play (and the new found relationship with ODU) I really think Beamer will go sniffing around the ODU offensive staff. Again, no insider information, no rumors, no papertrail, but my gut tells me that this approach makes sense and fits a perceived notion that I have that Beamer wants less responsibility and turning it over to a team that knows how to work together and recruit to the system makes sense to me.
I also think BS needs to be retained in some form, but I highly doubt he is. Way too many ill informed fans are out for his head at this point that keeping BS on the staff would cause an outrage. I personally would like to see Stinespring take over a role similar to Cav, and see O'cain, Sherman, and Newsome get the boot.
I'm very interested to see what changes are made if any, and I hope I don't have to wait too long into the off season to see them happen.
Robert Brown had flu-like symptoms and Will Johnston still doesn't start. It's our own fault #StartWillJohnston
Wow. Well, it's time for Will Johnston to really step up. It's his time to shine. I wouldn't be surprised to see JVZ playing a little at the 4 now too.
About reaching the NCAA's this year, but it looks like our team has come back down to earth with this loss. Losing at home to a team as bad as Georgia Southern is a serious eye-opener. The team has some major short-comings, especially in the paint, that cannot be disguised. They are still fun to watch, and show good effort, and have one the best players in the country. Truly hope they regroup and start winning again, but the last 3 games have shown a lot weaknesses. Maybe its just the flu bug... GO HOKIES!
i've thought about this quite a bit ... and think that if logan is projected to be a 1st or 2nd rounder in the draft (which i think he will be), he's gone .. too many what-if's and risks to staying.
If a new OC runs the offense as well as Bud does the defense, Beamer will have no problem letting him run the offense. BS didn't run the offense well, so it's no wonder Frank stepped in.
I'm sure frank will still step in and say things like "time to kill the clock" or "go for this 4th down" or "stop running up the score," but if we get an accomplished/effective OC, I don't think we'll see Frank having that much influence on the offense.
Kinda off topic, but I was a little disappointed with the article. Could've been a lot longer, with more stats, details, quotes, etc.
and his recruiting successes have been well documented, but we really need a paradigm shift on the offensive side of the ball. If Stiney is allowed to stay on the staff, it's a sign that Beamer just doesn't understand what we need. As far as I'm concerned, everyone save for Shane on the O-staff needs a pink slip.
Recruiting may take a hit this year (see Jim Reid) but I doubt it. If our offensive recruits see that we're genuinely dedicated to fixing the past wrongs and to start scoring some goddamn points, they'll stay.

You're right. I did my math wrong.
Didn't get to watch today (un?)fortunately... Thanks for the recap, Mike. Doesn't look like I missed a whole lot.
Unless either ESPN.com's stats page (for stats before today), or my math adding in today's results, is wrong, he now has a 24.8 ppg average, and C.J. McCollum has 24.9.
Two bad losses and everyone melts down and points out every flaw in this team. So we had two bad games. JJ will get these guys back on track. We'll be fine. Go Hokies!
It looked like JJ was just angry at Raines for his lack of rebounding. He missed a defensive rebound in the beginning of the game and immediately was benched.
Erick Green might be the best player in the country. Everyone else on our team was flat out awful today, but he was sensational again. I know he probably won't win POY, but he deserves it so far this year.
Makes sense. Just coincidental today I guess. It really seemed like any time we got anything going there was an official timeout that gave GASO a chance to recover without burning one of their timeouts.
It might be a very long year in the ACC if Tech can't get any form of post scoring from either Raines, JvZ, Barksdale, etc. Not one time today did any of the bigs get the ball on the block and go score...and the few times they did actually have a chance to showcase their post moves they missed badly. Defenses will (and have) start really pushing out on the guards because they know they don't have to worry about any inside presence. The bigs (and the guards) also have to rebound way better on the defensive glass to compete in the ACC- Georgia Southern showed how easy it is to get 3's off kickouts directly after offensive rebounds.
Erick Green had another amazing game today and should be in serious consideration for All-American recognition if he keeps plaing like he is right now...
1) Rebounds - I feel like Georgia Southern got soooo many offensive rebounds, and soooo many second chance points. Sometimes they got 3 straight possessions, each with a full shot clock. Very Frustrating to watch.
2) Shooting - Shots just weren't falling for us today.
3) Defensive Stops - Kinda ties in to rebounding, but I just felt like every time we went on a run, they scored.
These three things together prevented any major momentum swinging runs.
Like I say, haven't listened to any post game talk, haven't looked at the box score, just my observations from watching the game live.
Official time outs are every 4 minutes I believe? They occur at the closest stopping point (foul for example) to that 4 minute mark. So if there's a foul committed at 15.30 left in the first half, that's the first official time out. The next official time out occurs at the first stopping point after the 12 minute mark. Make sense?
I know I'm really tired and apathetic because I've been studying like crazy, and it looked like that's how the team felt today. I just got the sense that the Hokies were the more talented team, and knew it. We kept on letting them go on runs, but the team seemed to have no sense of urgency whatsoever until about 5 or 6 minutes left in the game. As soon as they started to seem worried about the possibility of getting upset at home, they were practically dominant. This was a frustrating game to watch. The team looked like they expected to win and felt as if there was no need to panic, even down by double digits late in the game.
Sorry to make such a long post, but I also have three questions. 1) Why did JJ sub so often in the first half? It seemed like there was a different set of guys out there every other possession. 2) Does anyone understand the late game clock management? At WVU, JJ wanted Robert Brown's prayer. Someone asked him about that at the chalk talk, and he said he called for that play. It makes me wonder if he wanted the quick three from Green late in the game today, and if so, why? 3) Does anyone have any idea what the rules for official timeouts are? It seemed like every time we got any kind of momentum going today, there would be an official timeout, but my friend and I started to notice that there was basically never an official timeout called when GASO started to get momentum going. I'm not saying the job of the referee is to stop momentum with official timeouts all the time, but it seemed like that was happening a lot today. Again, sorry for the long post, but today's game left me with a lot of questions.
these are the games we must win in order to have a shot and not be the bubble team to not make the tournament again. with the way the first 7 games looked, I thought that dropping games like this may be a thing of the past. i know we cant win every game but these are must wins, just hope this doesn't come back to bite us in a few months

See I thought the high top had powers to protect him from injury...
