I think there can still be success in the offense we currently run, but the way we call plays is baffling & certainly needs to change in the offseason. I'm not against us switching to a completely new system, I just don't want to have another down year because we are installing a brand new offensive scheme.

My guess is since he isn't practicing against an ACC quality big man (no offense JVZ), he just came out a little rusty... After the end of last season though I'm not too worried, he will pick it back up

When we got to first down on the 14, our group said the same thing: "Don't let LT pass it." We've seen at least two brain dead interceptions in this area, the Cincy ball that bounced off the TE's hands and the "I didn't see either of those two LB'ers who could have picked it off" pass in the flat against Miami.

Also, at that point, our defense was all over Manuel. You have to give yourself worst case scenario: kick a FG and let Foster win it for you. And we had EJM on the ropes, 3rd and 10 before he gained 9 yards on a great pass over the blitzing Bruce Taylor.

Back to the offense: The first play was a 5 yard gain to JCC. He hit the hole hard and if Via had extended on the backside LB'er, JCC scores on that play. The second play, Bjoern Werner made a great play to keep JCC from bouncing it outside where he would have scored. Werner is an all american, he kept his outside leverage on Painter and pushed JCC inside.

Then, the final 3rd down play. We all knew it was coming because it was by far the play that gave us the best chance at a first down. FSU saw it coming, and defended it poorly. It was open, but Benedict on the pull ran right by Williams. Maybe Williams was shielded behind the OT/DE action, it's hard to see. To make matters worse, Benedict missed the primary block then stood by instead of hitting Hunter, his secondary option. It was Hunter who hit LT while he's held up by Williams and kept LT for falling for the FD.

It's so easy to see any set of plays as the gamechanger in a close loss. But we put ourselves in position to win by going to our best play and our best short yardage runner. It was a play we scored on easily in the 3rd QTR, but if the pulling guard doesn't block anyone, it won't work.

Greenbergs teams have always struggled against any zone play. While i didnt catch the game, i am not shocked by the editor's thoughts above about playing better against the zone. Some of this has been coaching (just swinging the ball around the paremeter constantly which only really works in the high school level) and other has been the lack of a caliber point guard that can penetrate and kick, and in sequence knock down the open shot. Last year i felt we were pretty decent against teams that played us man. Then anytime they went to a zone we were done. I questioned why didnt teams just play zone all game verse us and some eventually did (with the exception of excellent man/help defenses like Duke and UNC).

I hope JJ uses these out of conference games as conditioning tests. I feel we can beat almost anyone we have on our out of conference slate, but once we get into ACC we could lose just about every game because of our lack of depth. I feel this team will put in the work to be in good shape come ACC play and we need to rally behind and support their efforts.

I felt like he had a couple looks but from what I noticed he couldn't finish with his left hand. I saw 2 or 3 shots that he missed with his left and I know he can make with his right. It's just one of those things that he really needs to work hard at, it's only gonna come with practice.

I'm pretty sure Michigan is the favorite for now. Have to give them credit, they have been killing the recruiting game as of late.

I also don't buy the "too many backs" excuse. Michigan had 3 backs in the 2012 class, and at least one four star RB in each class since 2007 (Austin White just missed the cut in 2010). I know there are those who don't buy into the Rivals star ratings, and it is definitely not an exact science, but clearly he isn't shying away from the competition.

Best of luck to him, he will most likely be a great back wherever he goes.

Or even a clever caption, but WTF is up with the bundle of cables duct taped to the wall behind O'Cain?!?

That's VT's offensive philosophy in a nutshell: a bunch of loose wires slapped together haphazardly and hoping it all works.

I guess Stiney went in the booth this year because he has a chair there to catch a nap and can't do that standing on the sidelines. We know he don't have one of those big laminated sheets to cover his face with because that would require more than the 5 plays he has.

O'Cain kind of looks like one of those old Imperial Generals in the Star Wars movies that Darth Vader chokes out. If only he had the green uniform on.

I hate to see what has become of ETSU's program after being a top 25 team during my formative years. Guys like Mister Jennings, Calvin Talford, Greg Dennis, Rodney English, Trazel Silvers, and Jason Nibblet lead them to 5 or 6 NCAA tournaments in a row and a top 10 ranking and coverage by Sports Illustrated (the Scott Norwood field goal Super Bowl Preview.) The move from the Southern Conference, required because of the decision to drop football, and into the Atlantic Sun (where they have no regional rivals) has decimated a program that routinely put 6000-10000 people in the Minidome during the early 90's. Sad indeed.

We definitely need to beat those stupid hoos. But I really want us to make it to a bowl, I don't care which one. Not making a bowl would be down right embarrassing. Finishing 6-6 and in the Sun Bowl is a complete failure by any respectable standard. I don't think ending up 6-6 instead of 5-7 saves the head(s) of some of the coaching staff.

Logically, it has to be Michigan, right? Of his finalists, it's the only school that won't go through a coaching transition, and Borges wil give him the carries he needs to be on a national stage.

I was really expecting big things from Cadarian Raines this year, figured if he could stay healthy he might be a bit of a surprise on a team that was lacking scoring inside. The offense seemed to be trying to get him involved (he had more touches down low than I remember our de facto center ever getting last year) but seemed lost when he got the ball. His shooting line was 3-9 but by my count at the game (which I would have to go back and watch replay to confirm) there were 4 shots that he seemed to just throw the ball up because he was close without getting anything that looked like a high quality attempt. If I remember correctly, he made one of these but they seemed like very low percentage shots despite him being deep in the paint.

Our back court looked very good, but the front court concerns me a little bit. The rebounding margin in particular is a cause for concern, but that is something that comes down to effort a lot, so hopefully playing hard can atone some for the size differences we will face this year. I noticed that the guys are more decisive when they shoot. Some were bad decisions, but more often than not the shots taken were good ones. And pushing the pace definitely helped us wear them down in the long run.
Overall I was pleased and excited to see the new era. We will definitely need Rankin to play well to facilitate when Green takes a breather.

I cant help but think of what could've been, after seeing this game. Finally, it seemed like the defense played at the level we expected for this season. Particularly up front.
