Tech... There's only one.

If he can replicate that play a few times this season, I'm all for it. But I would also like him to be a bigger factor in the passing game because if he goes down with an injury on special teams, we have to cycle receivers in the depth chart and perhaps end up playing a true freshman.

Granted, the true freshman in question is Josh Stanford who has really made an impression in camp, so I'm not OVERLY worried about Dyrell getting injured, but I would rather see a tried and tested vet out there running routes than the new kid on the block. Also, #11 has been plagued by injuries his whole career at Tech and I just hope that he has the ability to make it through an entire season for a change.

from the bottom of my heart for a valid excuse to take a break from my studies of tort law...

South Carolina - The campus fully expects the win. And a huge one too. Spurrier was talking a big game earlier this week too.
NC State - I just can't bring myself to pick UT for anything. Just don't have it in me.
Boise State - Boise State always finds a way to sneak their way into BCS talk early on. No exception this year. They'll win it, then we'll have to listen to ESPN extoll the virtues of Southwick and the blue turf for the rest of the season.
Clemson - On principle, I'm picking the ACC.
Alabama - Bama will hammer Denard. Then during the broadcast the whole Danny Coale thing will come up and we'll all be sad.
VT - I do believe it'll be close. Especially since we'll be wearing those terrible orange uniforms.

Also, random aside... UVA opens against Richmond in Scott Stadium this Saturday. I've always been disappointed with my Spiders because they'll hang with UVA for the first half, then come back out looking completely deflated. It's pathetic, because they are capable of beating UVA... But I keep the faith. This is the year we deliver a debilitating blow to the 'hoos and embarrass them in Scott. I feel it.

Hello friends -

What does everyone think about Dyrell returning kicks this year? Is there worry about injury? Other concerns?

I'll just say I'm all for it:

As I enter my 10th season as a hokie fan I find myself feeling residuals from the Sugar bowl. It may the result of espn hyping up the Michigan/Alabama game or maybe the idea that America's reckoning of VT losing the big game has become so firmly entrenched that it's bordering the definition of a "curse." Don't get me wrong--I'm excited about GT, Logan and the defense, etc, but I think the only thing that will satisfy me is beating a top 10 team or beating a legitimate BCS opponent. No longer do I talk with my friends about winning a national title, something I did every year since 02 until 2010. It's almost silly to have a serious conversation with another fan about that these days. Whats eating at me now is how close we've come in most of the big time games. I was at Fed Ex in 04 and witnessed the bad penalty in the 3rd quarter. I was at the Sugar bowl in 05 when a dropped pass in the endzone cost us a 4 point victory against Auburn. I was outside Lane stadium in 05 when Marcus had the worse game of his short career. I vividly recall Matt Ryan throwing a touchdown in the final seconds in 07, the same year Tyrod started his first game in Baton Rouge and we suffered the worst defeat by a top team. I was there watching Sean Glennon flounder in the second half in the Georgia Dome, and later watched Alabama pull away in the fourth quarter a couple years later in the same stadium. More recently, I lost sleep for two nights after Kellen Moore moved his team down the field in the final two minutes of the Boise game and luckily watched from home as Stanford whipped VT in the second half. I was the only one to stay at home of my core group of fellow season ticket holders who traveled to New Orleans for Michigan. A half a bottle of bourbon is the only thing that put me to sleep after watching the reversed Danny Coale TD...I didn't even watch after that call and went straight to bed. I know I'm probably missing a few games, but most of the top 10 opponents we play---we play them hard, we are in a position to win, and we come up short...which reminds me of Nick Saban and the "4th quarter" mentality they have. I wonder why Frank doesn't instill some sort of new mantra for the team this year. We are missing an identity this year. I can't remember getting so little coverage before a season---nobody is talking about the hokies. Maybe I prefer we're off the radar and maybe I don't know about something the coaches are preaching to our players, but i hope its something refreshing. We need a new story--something to look back on years later and decide to put in the 2012 season dvd before we turn to 04, or Ryan Williams highlight reels of 2009. I don't know what the story will be, but I hope its not 11 wins and a BCS loss. I would rather have 8 or 9 wins and remember one of the greatest victories in Lane against a top 3 Florida State team...or even losing the ACC and whipping a respected top 10 team in a lower tier bowl. I realize that may sound ridiculous, but after all the big defeats I am so hungry for a HUGE win. It means more than an acc title or an appearance in the BCS. Our program has become boring to America its time we do something to really shock and awe the football world. I'm optimistic that could be Logan-throwing for 4000 yards in our new offense and running for 700-or a defense that sets a record for sacks, tds and turnovers. If we can't get to a title game, then by God go out there and make a name for ourselves even if we lose to UNC or Clemson. I realize this has become sort of a cynical rant, but I needed to get it off my chest. Heres to this Monday night hokie nation--I'll be in the east stands for the start of what could be a very special season. LETS GO HOKIES!!!!

South Carolina
NCSU - FEAR THE GLENNON
Michigan State - I'm pretty interested to see a Kellen-less Bronco team
Auburn - I'm guessing they drop 40+ on CU
Bama - If Kyle Fuller can shut down Robinson, I'm pretty sure they can too.
VT - I can't not do it.

All of These:

South Carolina wins and covers - As my wife, a USC-East Grad, the ONLY "Carolina."

NC-State wins and covers - I really like this NCSU team this year to sneak into the ACCCG

Michigan State & the points - This won't be the same BSU

Auburn to curb-stomp the other Kittens - Clumpson takes a step back this year

Michigan to cover the 7 - Michigan might even win this game

Virginia Tech - If I picked anything other than a complete beatdown in Lane Stadium on Monday Night, what kind of Hokie would I be?

South Carolina -7: Vandy isn't moving the ball on that D

Vols -3: If I am wrong, Dooley will get canned and they will hire The Sweater Vest at the end of the year.

Boise State +7: Boise's staff is too good with a year to prep for their "Super Bowl." MSU has a new QB too.

Clemson -3: Auburn plays the same system, and Clemson beat them last year. Tajh's gut could turn things the other way.

Alabama -13: No way that Michigan team that the Hokies knocked around beats Bama's defense. Denard won't make it to halftime

Hokies -7.5 Big number, but all the BS chatter about GT "adding wrinkles" makes me think perhaps the talent gap is too great.

gift from Chazz ...

with a friend. awesome.

If I remember correctly, I had a respectable showing last year, but there is always room for improvement...

1. Going with the Ol' Ball Coach
2. Wolfpack - I will never pick Tennessee in anything
3. Spartans
4. Tigers (the SEC variety)
5. Tide Rolls
6. H-O-K-I-E-S HOKIES!!

Beer - I will be partying with Jimmy Buffett on Saturday, so I'm thinking maybe Corona. I actually get to have a Sunday Funday for the first time in a month, and I'm not sure what I will be enjoying on Monday yet, but I do know that you can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning.

South Crackalacka

I think the discussion is good, but the statistics were kinda pointless. This is what I left with them last week. BTW love the site. Keep up the good work.

"Good discussion, but the statistical work done here is just proving “conventional wisdom”. Your offense gets less yards when you play better defense. I would hope you would find statistical correlation in that.

The question isn’t just does any team benefit from having extra time to prepare for the triple-option. I would assume that any team benefits from having extra preparation time against any other team. The question you’d have to answer is does a team benefit from extra time to prepare for the TO more or less than in comparison to other offensive schemes."

They need to do something different, with them ugly ass Russell uniforms they wear.... Russell smh

I hate Boise! So mich st.
Auburn
Bama
Hokies

USCe -- two words, Lattimore and defense

NC State -- Glennon will impress I think and NCS secondary will expose Bray

Sparty -- Sparty's dline will have Boise's new QB crying to his mama

Auburn -- as much as I hate to admit it .. I don't like Clemson but I want the ACC to look good, Auburn seems to show up against the ACC. They'll win a close one

Bama -- Michigan is way fucking overrated and them being a preseason top 10 team is laughable.

VT -- I think they'll get up early with some big plays and then we know what happens to GT. CPJ will shit a brick, throw headsets, and wonder how it is that Frank Beamer annually owns his ass.
