ok, ignore the comment about individual players ordered by class... don't know what I was thinking there. They only seem to be doing that where there's no clearer ordering, which makes more sense.

I can picture someone in the media office laughing at our attempts to filter through contradictory clues (aka mistakes) in this guide...

I think you're reading the guide wrong. The individual player descriptions seem to be ordered by class, not by the 2-deep, which only seems to be represented on the first page. Holmes is listed as the starter in the 2-deep, with JC Coleman as the backup along with Scales, not as a costarter. Via is not listed as the 3rd Center, nor are Bruce or Hop listed in the 2-deep (JGW is, which seems to be a mistake... it says later that he's still out for the spring as expected and that Tweedy is the spring starter).

That's a lot of weight on Hop. Hope he's in good playing shape come the fall.

corey is gonna get a look at def end/def tackle, but that means harley or others need to step and play dt for a lot of burn.

If the Hokies retain the offensive philosophy they used last fall, you will see Martin and Malleck in two tight end sets. Everyone talks about Randall Dunn in the passing game, but he didn't produce last year, and it is a disadvantage for the offense when a guy runs on the field and every guy on defense knows it is a passing play. Dunn stinks in blocking, so Malleck is going to be the passing threat from tight end.

I watched film of Nick Dew in high school yesterday on a whim. If he gets on the field, he should be used as a blitzer. The kid has an explosive first step when blitzing, but becomes very pedestrian going sideline to sideline.. I think the injuries and Clark's dismisal take away the opportunity for the Hokies to experiment with Edwards at whip, Taylor at backer, and Tyler at mike, which is something I strongly supported. The list of whips now is very uninspiring.

Becton is too heavy. He isn't 6'6, and to weigh in at 330 when his primary problem has been snap count explosiveness is not a good sign. If Benedict and Painter play really well, I am predicting that they consider playing Via at left tackle. Beamer has really talked highly about Painter this spring, which is suprising given that most insiders have written him off as a lost cause.

George George is listed with Duan Perez-Means as the 3rd string TE behind 1. Eric Martin, 2a. Randall Dunn and 2b. Ryan Malleck.

Whip looks like this at the start of spring ball:

1. G-W
2a. Alonzo Tweedy
2b. Ronny Vandyke
3. Nick Dew

Even French replied to me regarding similarity to Ore with more compact strides. He, or no one soon for that matter, will replace David Wilson. Like Ore though, having a guy dependable on third and short versus LT will pay dividends. Some of the problem going into the first Clemson matchup was having a battered Thomas after he took a hit in the Marshall game that stymied his productivity. Again, Wilson's dynacism is unmatched. Having a smart running back take his place however can keep that offensive tempo we've grown accustomed to going. We drain the clock and tire the defense taking sustained drives. A 4YPC kind of guy will fit in with that.

Regarding his skill set, Holmes is a jack of all trades and a master or none, or so it seems. He won't dazzle with his speed, cut on a dime, or run a guy over with regularity, but he'll consistently gain yards. David Wilson was a special talent, but the offense really missed that reliable back that took what was there, even if it was only a couple yards, and made the smart play. I hope Holmes can do that, be an all-purpose back, and help stabilize the offense.

Bud Foster mentioned that Holmes was weighing in around 212 lbs now, so hopefully he's a little more "game ready" in terms of sheer size

Circa '05 the Stache gained accompaniment by the rest of the Goatee. This was also the last time we had arguably our best defense. Does Bud only show tha Butt-Chin when we have a top 5 D?

Shaka aint comin, he's already rejected NC State and Illinois in recent years.

He either loves VCU or he's waiting for an elite bball school. A lot of people are saying he's waiting for UCLA to fire their coach next year.

Shane said in the interview that it was Dyrell who didnt wanna do it anymore. He had 2 straight season ending injuries on KO returns so who can blame him?

I believe Knowles and possibly Jarret will be the returners come spring.

We should show him the door. That said, he's shown himself to be a coach who can turn a poor team into a decent one, but can't turn a decent team into a really good one. Also, Greenberg coached at UVa?! Who knew?

Take the money, Seth. Take it.

I agree with everything you said. I think you can make the case for him both staying and leaving. Me personally, if he does leave I'd like to see us go after Shaka Smart or Norfolk State's hc.
