someone else hates New Orleans. I've got three visits under my belt (one in HS plus two Sugars, all pre-Katrina), and every time it became clearer that the locals see themselves as carnies, us as marks, and their city as a fairground that someone else will clean up one day. If I'm going to spend $250/night on a hotel room (or even $160 out by the airport), I'll spend it somewhere where the locals give a damn about their city. Montreal is my favorite city in the world basically because it's what New Orleans could be if anyone there cared.
The market-flooding issue (especially from bundling tickets with the BCSCG) is a big problem for the schools, and one the bowls don't give a crap about. Schools and conferences need to figure out how to jam the guarantee system back down the bowls' throats.
I agree...it's not ticket prices it getting there. $850 round trip from Richmond is insane. $500 for the train which takes 20 plus hours each way...no better. Or, 2,000 miles round trip in a rental car. hmm.
After going to Lane 6 times, down to North Carolina for the Wake game and ACC championship game I am having trouble justifying $1,500 for flight and hotel even if the game tickets were free.
Blame the Airlines for price gauging!!!
A newborn is keeping us from New Orleans this year, but in our stead, I offer you this:

I wish I could. The issue isn't the ticket prices. It is the cost of airfare, coupled with the purchase of the new car, coupled with the fact that I absolutely detest New Orleans. It doesn't help that the BCS system has completely devalued all the bowl games except for the Rose Bowl and the National Championship game for all established football powers. The game is, in essence, a high profile (and expensive) exhibition (hence my argument for giving younger backups practice snaps leading up to the game.) It meant much more in 1995 when the Hokies were attempting to break on to the national scene.
Anticipate a post on my plan for replacing the BCS. Trust me, you won't like it.
My brother and his GF are going, and my old roommate couldn't swing it either to at least split hotel costs. I also swore off New Orleans again unless it was a national championship game; Michigan's damn tempting, but flying solo on this one just isn't practical.
I did two Sugars and an Orange pre-mortgage. Time for other folks to step up.
I really don't get some people. No idea why this "journalist" would write such garbage. I think you wrote a fantastic response here, and to be honest I really hope you send this to the editor at the Daily Press since i think it covers all points and reflects well on our community/alumni. I can only imagine what other upset people have written to them that is not as well articulated.
Lockhart decommitted already? crazy after spending year at hargrave. why come all way to va to post grad school if you are going back to miami
already
Just saw lockhart visited miami this weekend, might lose him too.. Just can't count on these commitments til signing day anymore.
visited pitt today.
the staff was aware.
no clue what it means right now.
Woo ... I'm not the only one who's going to be there for New Year's Eve. (I'm going from 12/31 until 1/5.)
Sounds like there should be Hokie meet-up to ring in the 2012.
I would call that an apology but rather a quick sweep of the broom while lifting the rug. This rebuttal does nothing to honestly be sorry for the tone or weight the original held, while still basically saying we meant it, but should have chosen some different words. Cheap attempt.
of the hokie family. Just over $50,000 at 6pm today.
I enjoyed the read. As a former student and employee of the University myself, having been in school that terrible day in April '07 I found her article personally demeaning and irresponsible. Frankly, it was just short of making me cry.... The words you have written here reminds me quickly of what a great community Virginia Tech truly is and how quickly we can respond to an attack on one, or all of us.
has issued an apology. You may read it here:
http://www.dailypress.com/news/dp-edt-vatechcolumn-1210-20111210,0,74444...
"Virginia Tech remains the place where you're most likely to get shot"
If you think this story was bad, you should read her other "articles."
She also wrote an article making light of a child rape, using the rapist's sense of humor as the angle to further her mindless drivel.
She also tried to act like the decapitation was random even though there are readily available sources mentioning how the attacker was listed as the victim's emergency contact...
That story is gone from the DP website now. Hoping they fired her.
Brian Cook, proprietor of mgoblog pointed this out and I think its of interest to students of the game.
I want to focus on what happened in the fourth quarter[of the Ohio game]. After the punt disaster Michigan gets the ball back on their own 20 up three points. Their drive goes like so:
QB sweep for 3
Waggle action rollout to deep, uncovered Hemingway for 20
Zone stretch for 11
QB draw for 10
I-Form power for 5 on second and inches
Zone read keeper for 3
Inverted veer keeper for 6
Waggle TE corner for 4 yards and a TDThese are all different; OSU had not seen plays 2, 3, 5, or 8.
found at http://mgoblog.com/content/upon-further-review-2011-offense-vs-osu
OC Al Borges has been around a long time. Expect much of the same for the bowl game. Being physical and quick is the best defense against this attack.
Next insight . . .
The inverted veer is a favorite play. It basically has all the advantages of a zone read plus you get another guy free to block (so 11 offensive players against 9 defensive players (both DE's are taken out of the play - the far side is unblocked and so far away from the action he won't get to it and the playside DE who gets suckered on the zone read). Its a great play and is discussed here:

I think we are more physical this year than we were under RichRod. Other than the MSU game we have played fairly well in conference. I think offensively we are very physical with several skill players who are excellent blockers and a pulling guard who likes to blow up linebackers and push them into the safeties. Defensively Martin has out-matched nearly every offensive lineman who has had the misfortune of having to go up against him 1x1. Mattison preaches that each play on the defensive line begins with a blow to the opponent, so yes they have been trained to be physical. Whether or not they have lived up to that in every game is open for debate. There is a big difference between being physical and being dirty and I have only seen one or two deliberately nasty penalties this year by the defense so I don't really think that part of the game is a concern.
I think Gardner was recruited to run the spread but he's no Denard. Its going to be difficult for many of Michigan fans to go back to a pocket semi-mobile passer after four years of dilithium. As far as the future, after Gardner, we have Bellomy, another mobile type but no Denard. Our 2013 class already has in-state Shane Morris, a 5* committed. I believe he is on the top of the 2013 position rankings. He is mobile, but not a spread-read type of player and recruited to be more or less a statue. So yes, pocket passers are in our future.
I'm really enjoying this dialog and I hope you guys are too.
But I'm going to do some scouting this weekend so I don't ask the obvious ones.
1) I don't think he uses email. This isn't a joke although it should be.
2) If Beamer tapped the Ball Coach on the shoulder for a little help against Dabo it certainly didn't work. I know our guys, especially Foster was close with the old Ohio State staff, and actually they've worked with Meyer's staff, but at this point I think all the film is out there. The game will be won by whichever team is hungrier.
Offensive scheme not withstanding, do you guys consider yourself a physical football team? Was getting beat up against Sparty an outlier on the season, or the trend? I know Iowa manhandled what everyone thought was a tough GT team in 2009, and Stanford has us screaming, "Uncle," by the end of the game. I think it's fair to say Tech has struggled with bigger, more athletic teams that get after us.
This is not really relevant to our game, but I am interested in what you think anyways. Is that the future once Denard has graduated, or do you think the hybrid will stay around with Gardner waiting in the wings?
There's a lot of time until the Sugar Bowl. If you guys have anything specific you want to know about Tech please post it too. If it's a simple someone will reply in the comments, otherwise I can turn it into a post.

I'd love to, but i'll be in Krakow for new years.
Cheering the Hokies on from across the way!
I did the Auburn Sugar Bowl and new years in NO, it was outstanding.
HIGHLY recommend everyone to go.
bonus is that weather was in the 70s and sunny so we could do shorts in the day time
Bourbon street is pretty outstanding as well.
just do it!
