People will be analyzing what Cignetti managed to do for a long time. There are some key elements of it that VT is certainly well-positioned to execute.
We'll definitely give it the old college try.
I agree, but not this year.
I think the days of burying 5 star depth on all the sec teams are ending and those "bench" players are being spread out for the time being.... Makes everyone more exposed to injury luck but more parity across those willing to pay
I'm also wondering if the NIL and transfer portal era aren't significantly loosening the SEC's chokehold on the sport. Now three years in a row the Big Ten has won the CFP. And the SEC hasn't had a team in the national championship game for three years straight now. Obviously their "brands" are still big and they bring in top TV revenue, along with the Big Ten. But I think the new landscape is proving that, as long as your school can still find a way to make the financial commitment, and you hire the right coach, you can insert yourself in as a national contender fairly quickly.
Miami making it to the title game has me wondering if Franklin and VT can't do the very same thing. Obviously big picture, ACC leadership is still terrible and we have too many low or no brand football teams. But I am seriously starting to wonder if the P2 talk of them taking CFB and running away with it may be a bit premature.
First year in and taking the W... thank you gents! Becker Brothers aka The Law wants you to know I'll be back next year to defend. Could this win it all in Year 1 thing be contagious? Go Hokies!
When's the "cautiously optimistic that we're going to be an improved team but not much better than a 6-6 7-5 team in 2026 train" board?
"Because Virginia Tech" is all the write up I require.
I don't know that might have just been the supply for the game.

Because we are cursed and cant have nice things
Miami WOULD have won had they leaned on that running game (an early 3 and out after three pass plays would set the game up for what we ended up seeing), specifically that OZ to the right side. That has been money the entire playoff. Trust what got you there. The Miami staff seemed to get worried that the game would get out of hand so they didn't really lean on their RBs the way they needed to.
I get it, but I'd just say you ain't seen nothin' like this at Virginia Tech before. Screw "cautious optimism" this year. I'm all in.
2007 clears for me. I have not been particularly enthused during either of the 12 team playoffs in terms of excitement around the games. I forgot the game was yesterday until about halfway through my morning, which never happened before the last two seasons. The NIL/portal stuff has created a generally lower quality of football played at the top, and I simply haven't been impressed with the top end teams' football for several years now. I'd say 2022 was the last time I was really impressed by the quality of football on display from the top tier of teams.
It was, however, a great game, and I agree that Indiana winning was a great narrative and achievement. When I see people suggest that Indiana is one of the "best" teams of all time though... I think there were 6 teams in 2019 alone that would run them out of the building.
We just saw:
- The first team with a Bluechip ratio <50% win a title (I know... a little misleading, but STILL)
- The first first-time national champion in LITERALLY 3 decades
- A final four that didn't feature a single blueblood school
or SEC school
This was probably the most exciting season top to bottom in a quarter century. 2007 is the only other season in contention with a more exciting regular season, but a less exciting post season.
What a season.
Sorry, but that seat has been taken since the 70s when the train was nearly empty and I have not given it up yet. At my age, you don't have to wait too long for my seat, and believe me when I tell you, it can be a bumpy ride, but hey, it's my school! and I love 'em win or lose.
From what I saw, Mendoza had turned into a blocker and they didn't see that hit as being on the QB per se, but it was a brutal hit and certainly could have been called.
Beg to differ on the tripping call. Watched it several times and the IU defender didn't even see the running back as he was taken to the ground by the blocker and was rolling over to try to regain his feet. Good no call from my take.
Just last year I figured there was a 0% chance we win a natty in my lifetime. Outside forces and a seemingly significant financial commitment from the school has me thinking its no longer 0.

- Money
- Elite Scouting
- Great in game coaching
Cig was Saban's Recruiting Coordinator for 5 years. There's youtube clips of him talking about how he evaluates a dude's knees. The money is obviously a requirement, but I think the real secret sauce is Cig's scouting.
Bruce Pearl on Line 3.....
He'll be ok...
Bobby Petrino would also like a word...
Classes start today for spring semester, so we will know soon enough if all the transfers showed up. I understand most got their student IDs last Friday.
Athletes are the only entity in this sport who are judged on their motivations. No other entity in the sport is expected to make decisions for anything other than financial reasons.
Lane Kiffin says hi
Was anybody laughing when they talked about it being Beck's last game? What are the chances he actually makes it in the NFL? He has a reputation of folding under pressure and the spotlight.

The $ECs loss is all of our gain.
