The Winds of Change

Dear Leaders of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University,

I don’t’ wanna go on a rant here….but do you ever actually watch your football games?  How far does this thing have to go before any real changes are made?  Watching Virginia Tech play football is like watching Jersey Shore.  It’s entertaining for a while, but you’re really only watching because you know a disaster is coming.  This school has established itself as a top tier football program.  They are consistently in the top 25, and more often than not (because of weak schedules), find themselves in the top 10.  The quality of recruits seems to be getting better and better, so can someone tell me why they can’t find a way to win the big games?

How many times has a Virginia Tech fan had to do that awkward laugh when someone brings out the name “Chokies?” We fans know how it feels to try and laugh it off, but deep down inside, you know they’re right.  Well guess what?  The Chokies are alive and well my friends, and I’m so sick of it.  We know the outcome of the games before we even play them.  It’s a shock to the system when Tech wins a big one because we all expect them to give the game away.  Sooner or later we fans are going to have to come to the realization that this all comes right down on Frank (the tank) Beamer. Hey, I know how you feel Tech, I love my old Uncle Joe, and we all go along with what he says because we don’t want to upset the guy, but it would be a cold day in hell when I let him drive me anywhere.

Keeping Frank Beamer as the head coach is the same thing.  We love the old guy to death.  We think he’s the face of Virginia Tech, and he should probably be buried under the 50 yard line.  But the guy is old.  He’s old, and has lost touch with the game.  This is just like when Joe Gibbs came back to the Redskins.  We gave him the benefit of being the old Joe who took the Skins to the promised land.  Then we realized he had no idea what he was doing anymore.

Virginia Tech football is a good ol' boys network.  Why else have people been on the coaching staff for 20+ years?  Frank gives his buddies (and kids) a job, and then just turns a blind eye to their performance.  Don’t believe me?  How else do you explain Bryan Stinespring?  Just typing that name makes me nauseous.  He might be the most hated man in Blacksburg even if he's not physically calling the plays anymore.  Every single year, Tech puts together a top level defense that will shut down powerhouses for majority of the game.  Then they sit back and watch their offense full of stars put up a plethora of field goals.  Guess what fellas, THAT DOESN’T WIN BALL GAMES.  Field goals are for losers.  Every time I see a “3” go up on the scoreboard I feel like we just lost that round.  It takes touchdowns to win ball games, so when you continuously put up three points at a time; we all know what’s going to happen.  Eventually tech will let up a big play, and now the opposition is right back in it.

WAY too many talented guys have come through this offense year after year, and yet Tech is still considered a mid-level program.  There’s a reason they don’t win the big one, and it’s because of the offense.  Defense is always on point, you know I’m right. So why am I still seeing the same garbage every week on my TV?  WHY IS BRYAN STINESPRING STILL ALLOWED INTO THE LOCKER ROOM?  How have the good citizens of Blacksburg not ran him out of town yet?  And why hasn’t someone above Frank Beamer stepped in to put an end to this?  Frank my friend, it’s time to go.  You’re a race horse with a broken leg…time to put you down.  You had a great run and you will always be considered as the king of the burg.  But it’s time to hang em up.  Bud Foster….congratulations, you’re the new top dog.

Mr. Foster, you have the patience of a saint, my friend.  For years you have sat there and watched your defense keep your team in games, only to have Bryan Stinespring wobble his goofy ass into a headset and throw up all over a play sheet.  It’s getting hard to watch these games knowing that the offense is only good for about 10 points a game.  And it’s even worse when I’m watching the game with a buddy and I call the plays before they’re run.  Guess what Bryan, running on first down is not a law you are required to follow, maybe try mixing it up a bit.

Actually, never mind Bryan, we’re beyond that.  Bud Foster, it’s time you took a stand.  You need to demand control of this team or else you’re bringing your talents to South Beach (or anywhere else).  After you get the head coach nod, you need to gut the whole coaching staff and bring in some people who actually have something on their resume besides “friend of Frank Beamer”.

Maybe I’m being a little too outspoken here.  Maybe I’m just overreacting after lasts nights’ botchfest that made me realize I knew the outcome before the game began.  I tried to convince myself that we deserved to be in the Sugar Bowl.  We didn’t.  We had no business being there.  Some will try to convince you otherwise, but numbers don’t lie people.  The Hokies are a “dominating” 8-45 against Top 10 schools, and 48-75 against the top 25.  Add to that the fact that they are 1-5 in BCS bowl games, and that’s a winning margin of a magnificent 37.9% against schools ranked in the top 25.

“One percent of people think Bryan Stinespring is a legitimate offensive coordinator…..I am the 99%.”
