Logan Thomas - Senior Bowl Summary

He was tabbed as someone to watch coming into this week by the Huff Post:

Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas: The 6-5, 256-pounder has very good mobility for his size and was able to take care of his body during his up-and-down career with the Hokies. He has a big arm and would have likely put up big numbers on the stat sheet with better surrounding talent. However, a quarterback will always be judged by wins and losses, so Thomas has a lot to prove leading up to the draft. He is not very mechanically sound in the pocket and has forced too many throws during his time in Blacksburg. He has a chance for a fresh start this week, though, while working in a pro scheme with good surrounding talent.

First day of practice went pretty well from all accounts:

Thomas has driven scouts crazy with his erratic play over the past two seasons, but its possible that he might have enjoyed the best day of any quarterback on either roster [the first day of Senior Bowl practice]. He delivered the ball with excellent velocity and zip in drills and looked like a confident passer from the pocket. Additionally, Thomas flashed timing and anticipation on a handful of throws in 7-on-7 that showcased his potential as a passer in a pro-style offense. Now, the impressive showing will not erase the two seasons of bad film put up by Thomas, but it could entice a team in need of a developmental prospect to take a chance on a 6-6, 254-pound athlete with intriguing physical tools.

Another good mention here on NFL.com for Thomas

Apparently day two of practice didn't go so well:

For the North squad, the quarterbacks Tajh Boyd, Stephen Morris and Logan Thomas struggled. While the wind was whipping hard all day, all three quarterbacks had issues placing the ball. Morris looked the best of the bunch, but that's not saying a lot. Boyd has mechanical issues and had issues getting the ball to the outside. Thomas threw wobblers or was just generally off target. After practices, Thomas told me that he's raw as a quarterback, despite being a multi-year starter at Virginia Tech. Thomas is working with quarterback coach George Whitfield to improve his front leg in hopes that it boosts his accuracy.

Overall, the news was fairly good regarding his willingness to improve on issues and his overall ability to play the position from the standpoint of the four days of practice:

Logan didn't have the performance in the game that he would have liked, which fortunately most of the pro staffs don't actually stay for, more choosing to stay just for the practices during the week prior. He went 4 for 5 for only 18 yards, but took five sacks on the game. At least two of those were pure line breakdowns (although on one Logan probably should have adjusted the blocking as it was obvious the guy was blitzing). He looked haphazard at best running the offense, but the South side defense had some pretty incredible talent and gave the entire North team fits all day. The South won the game 20-10 with Logan having little effect one way or the other unfortunately. I was really hoping he would be able to have a break out game or have at least enough impact to get mentioned in the post game write-ups as someone to watch.

He wasn't highlighted as a Faller in this writeup on Yahoo, (unlike two other ACC QB's Boyd/Morris) but he didn't get himself mentioned in the Risers either:

This interview though is what I hope the scouts and team coaches took most of their cue's from as far as who Logan is:

How did you feel you threw the ball today?
"I could have done a lot better today. I wish I could have a couple throws back, obviously. It was a good day overall. I'm still learning. Learning a lot, and the more you learn the better you are."

What were some of the points you got from coaches on some of those throws you are talking about?
"Just throw a checkdown. Something like that, but for me, I just have to take my time and make sure I'm on my P's and Q's and get it done right."

This is an important week for you to answer some questions. Is that a lot of pressure on yourself?
"No, I've had the pressure on my shoulders for awhile. I understand and know it. I don't let pressure get to me at all. I'm always kind of like this, even keel, with a smile on my face; whether things are going good or bad, I'm in the middle."

What do you feel you need to show scouts?
"Just that I can be accurate and make good decisions. Take care of the football. Show that I have command of an offense and that I can be a great leader."

Who are some of the teams you've met with?
"I met with everybody except the Giants, Colts, Redskins and Broncos."

You always seem calm and composed.
"That is one of my biggest traits. That is what I've been taught all my life. The vocal part I worked on, and my coaches told me that it's okay to jump on somebody and tell them we need to get going. You can't be on them bad all the time; you have to be encouraging and being out here is tons of fun."

Overall I think he probably helped his stock as far as getting drafted but he didn't do anything to really change the conversations already being had on whether he could go anywhere from a second to fifth round pick. Lets hope Senior Day and the Combine show some steady improvement for him as he works with George Whitfield and he ends up in the higher picks.
