OL Numbers Comparison

I took a look at our OL numbers and those of four other universities, Alabama (the "gold" standard by which all other teams are measured), Clemson (the standard bearer for the ACC the last few years), Miami (the biggest challenge to winning the Coastal), and our Labor Day opponents in FSU.

Overall Linemen on Rosters (Counting Walk-ons):
VT: 24 (At least 15 scholarships), 3 Seniors, 6 Juniors, 4 Sophomores, 5 redshirt Freshmen, 6 true Freshmen
Bama: 18 (16 scholarships) 3 Seniors, 4 Juniors, 5 Sophomores, 2 redshirt Freshmen, 4 true Freshmen
Clemson: 15 (All 15 scholarships) 2 Seniors, 6 Juniors, 2 Sophomores, 3 redshirt Freshmen, 2 true Freshmen
Miami: 20 (18 scholarships) 3 Seniors, 4 Juniors, 3 Sophomores, 3 redshirt Freshmen, 5 true freshmen
FSU: 15 (All 15 scholarships) 3 Seniors, 3 Juniors, 4 Sophomores, 1 redshirt Freshman, 4 true freshmen

Hilgartification
14 Hokie O-Linemen weigh in at 300 lbs or more, 4 more are in the 290s.
13 Tide are in the 300s, 3 in the 290s
9 Tigers are in the 300s, 5 in the 290s
16 Canes are in the 300s, 1 in the 290s
9 Noles are in the 300s, 3 in the 290s

Coaching Turnover
Virginia Tech OL coach Vance Vice enters his 3rd year with the program
Alabama OL coach Brent Key is entering his 3rd year with the program
Clemson OL coach Robbie Caldwell is entering his 8th year with the program
Miami OL coach Stacy Searles is entering his 3rd year with the program
FSU OL coach Greg Frey is in his 1st season with the program

Recruiting
Virginia Tech has secured 3 commitments for 2019 at this point
Alabama has secured 3
Clemson has secured 1
Florida State has secured 2
Miami has secured 2

Thoughts
It comes as a serious surprise to me at least that the Hokies have more overall OL, and comparable scholarship OL, more upper-class experience, and greater numbers in the pipeline, than Alabama, Clemson, Miami, and Florida State.

It also surprises me that the Hokies' OL has more players north of 290 than those same teams. I think I saw one guy with either Bama or Clemson in the 250s.

Having the same guy coach you your entire career will benefit the 13 Clemson players. 9 Hokies will have their full careers at this point coached by Vice. 7 Tide have been coached by Key their whole careers. 6 Canes have been coached only by Searles. Not a single FSU OL has been coached by Greg Frey in a game before Labor Day

Granted, my numbers may not be entirely accurate. I don't know the scholarship status of Austin Cannon, nor do I know if any of the 3 Bama players or 5 Miami players not listed on the team recruiting pages on 247 were transfers.

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"
