OT: Justin Bibbs and Jarell Eddie - Lakers Need Some 3-Point Specialists

The Lakers are going to need some cheap shooters to finish their monstrosity of a roster.

This weekend Hokie alum Justin Bibbs will suit up for the Celtics and get his chance to show that he can be a consistent 3-point sharpshooter for an NBA team this season.

Fellow alum Jarell Eddie will also get another shot with the Celtics this weekend. Since 2014 he's played for multiple NBA teams on 10-day contracts, while also playing on multiple rosters in the D-League and the current G-League. Per Wikipedia, Jarell won the D-League 3 Point Contest during their All-Star Weekend in 2015.

Looking at you Magic, Pelinka, Lebron, and the rest of you Lakers!

Let's hope they get some good minutes and make their shots. GO HOKIES!!!

Link to the Celtics roster and schedule.

The Celtics tip-off their summer action with three preliminary games in the MGM Resorts Summer League beginning on

Friday, July 6 at 7:30 p.m. E.T. against the Philadelphia 76ers

Saturday, July 7 at 11:00 p.m. E.T. against the Denver Nuggets

Monday, July 9 at 7:00 p.m. E.T. against the Charlotte Hornets

Each team in the MGM Resorts Summer League will play a minimum of five games with three games scheduled between July 6-10 before being seeded in a tournament that starts on July 11 and concludes with the Championship Game on Tuesday, July 17.

I hope they both stay in Boston. With Lebron out west, the Celtics have the conference on lock for the next 3-5 years. 76ers might challenge, but I have little faith in their front office to keep them competitive.

Come to Blacksburg and see what the Hokie Pokie is really all about

What about Delaney? Did he re-sign with ATL?

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

he did not and is a FA right now. hope he links on somewhere. hes coming off a season where he missed a lot of time due to injuries.

Semi-related: The Dudest of Dudes (Zach Leday) signed with Atlanta's summer league. I'm sure John Collins is not hype about going up against ZLD every day in practice.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

Good for him! I thought I recognized LeDay on the sidelines as Trae Young built a mansion's worth of bricks.

Justin Bibbs finished the first Celtics summer league game 1-2 from the field and 2-2 from the line for 5 points. He probably had like 5 touches of the ball all game though so pretty good. Jarrell Eddie was 2-5 from the field for 6 points.

Justin Bibbs

Started at SG 1st game, at SF 2nd game, and came off the bench 3rd game.
46 total mins across all 3 games
10 total points (5, 2, 3)
30% field goals (3 for 10)
50% 3 pointers (2 for 4)
100% free throws (2 for 2)
6 rebounds (1 offensive, 5 defensive)
2 assists
4 turnovers
No Steals
No Blocks
3 personal fouls
+7 1st game, -7 2nd game, +1 3rd game

yeah ive been watching the Cs summer league games and because they don't really run an offense its mostly pick and roll and iso basketball I don't feel either of those are really justins strengths. he kind just stands at the 3 point line and hope someone kicks it to him which really limits his touches and shot attempts. most guys are out there trying to get buckets when they touch it so they can impress teams with #s. this game does not suit JB well at all.

also in the first summer league game he jammed his finger which kept him on the bench for most of the 2nd half of that one and he hasn't really looked comfortable with the ball since. he started out the game last night with 2 fingers tapped together his middle and ring finger on his shooting hand but it looked like he took the tape of by the 2nd time he was inserted into the ball game. I don't know how much effect this has really had since hes not touching the ball much anyways but hopefully he can find his nitch somewhere as a shooter and get some run this year. unfortunately after watching the Cs and knowing what their roster is going to look like for the most part I don't think he has a chance in boston.

Great info, thanks for posting

Jarell Eddie

Came off bench all 3 games
41 total minutes
13 total points (6, 7, 0)
35.7% field goals (5 for 14)
37.5% 3 pointers (3 for 8)
0 Free throws attempted
9 rebounds (1 offensive, 8 defensive)
1 assist
3 turnovers
1 steal
1 Block
3 personal fouls
-6 1st game, -4 2nd game, +4 3rd game

Not to hate on Bibbs because I love him and think he will find an NBA home if he plays with a bit more confidence, but Svi is a much better player. I know you're just comparing stats, but Svi is a very solid player in every aspect of the game.

agreed, Justin just plays with the flow of the game. never forces the issue. hes good enough that he can attack every now and then but he rarely does it and I haven't seen him do it at all in the summer league games.

Svi plays like a more NBA ready player, that's why I am surprised how similar their college stats are

I hope Bibbs can adapt and find a spot somewhere over the next few years

Dammit we have enough problems with the queen diva on board for 4 years, don't wish that evil on us!

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

Not sure I understand what you mean, but I legged you anyway just for posting

LeBron joining the Lakers.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

I get that part, but the rest?

It would be wishing evil on us (Hokies?) to have Bibbs or Eddie play with the greatest NBA player in the game?

Or it would be wishing evil on the Lakers to have Bibbs or Eddie play for them?

The final stats for Bibbs, Eddie and Lakers 2nd round pick Svi Mykhailiuk for comparison

(sorry, don't have time to learn to embed correctly, these stats are all per game averages except for Field Goals Made and Attempts which is total for the 6 games)

GP - MPG - PTS/G - FGM - FGA - FG% - RBG - APG - SPG - BPG

Justin Bibbs 6games - 17.8mins/g - 5pts/g - 12 for 27 - 44% - 1.7rebs - 1assists - 0.2steals -0.2blocks

Jarell Eddie 6 - 16mins/g - 3.5pts/g - 8 for 27 - 30% - 2 - 0.7 - 0.5 - 0.2

Svi Mykhailiuk 6 - 25mins/g - 17.7pts/g - 39 for 77 - 51% - 4.2 - 2.2 - 0.5 - 0.3

Aside from the great post above that details how Bibbs was playing with an injured finger for at least a couple of games and other factors, I think the stats also show that the summer league is really about showcasing the draft picks and giving them the most minutes, touches and shots, and guys like Bibbs and Eddie have to make due.

Also from the stats it looked like Bibbs played point, shooting guard and small forward in different games.

Good luck to them and all the Hokies with NBA dreams out there!

That is a disappointing stat line for Eddie as he has been in the D-league for a number of years. Bibbs doesn't look too bad, but you forgot the most important stat line (and the proposal of the post) what were each of their 3 PT %?

Come to Blacksburg and see what the Hokie Pokie is really all about

Eddie was coming off the bench mostly and even played Center, so I don't think he was there to show them what he could do, he was there to fill spots and give the draft picks support so they could show what they could do. Same with Bibbs probably.

3 Pointers:

Bibbs - 4 for 14 - 28.6% (1-2, 0-3, 1-2, 1-3, 0-1, 1-3)

Eddie - 5 for 17 - 29.4% (2-3, 1-4, 0-1, 0-3, 0-2, 2-4)

Mykhailiuk - 18 for 42 - 42.9% (4-8, 2-6, 3-9, 1-3, 2-5, 6-11)

Bibbs and Eddie just didn't get to take enough shots to get into a rhythm. If they were in the 70% range they might have opened some eyes, but they were on the other end of it so they'll have to keep working, not Laker ready unfortunately.

Svi took a lot of shots and had a lot of minutes to get into a groove, and he showed why he's a second rounder.

yeah eddie has signed multiple 10 contracts with teams, and has been pretty consistent in the D league I think teams know what they can get with him and really weren't looking for him to do more during the summer. maybe bibbs takes the Malcolm Delaney route and goes and plays overseas for a bit before trying to get back into the league. make some money young man.

as for Malcolm he hasn't been picked up by anyone yet but I am hopeful that someone signs him. injuries really set him back in ATL, that and he seems to be playing much much more conservative than he did at tech and even overseas. Hes been asked to play a lot of PG and so it seems as if he thinks or was told that the role of a PG is to run the offense and get the ball to the guys they want to get it too. I always thought of him as a score first guy when he was at tech. he has lost his swagger and aggressiveness. I hope he can find it and showcase it on another NBA team.

As an addendum to this thread to show how difficult it is for guys to make it in the NBA:

High profile Kansas guard Malik Newman was not drafted, was signed and then waived by the Lakers in July, but he seems to have landed in Miami.

Also, the undrafted Joel Barry II who led UNC to a national championship in 2017 was signed by the Lakers and still has hopes of making the team.

We'll be rooting for you Justin Bibbs, Jarell Eddie, Malcolm Delaney (playing in China), Erick Green, and all the other Hokies in the professional basketball ranks.

Back to football...

Looks like Justin Bibbs will be staying with the Celtics organization after they signed him to a training camp deal with an Exhibit 10 clause which means if he doesn't make their roster but continues with their G-League team for at least 60 days, he receives at minimum a $50,000.00 bonus plus salary.

There is also an option for the Celtics to turn any Exhibit 10 contract into a Two Way Contract, which would lock in a higher salary and give the Celtics flexibility in terms of bringing him on and off the roster. He could also decide to opt out and head to Europe.

and with jabari bird likely NOT going to be on the Celtics roster when the season begins that is an opportunity for a 2 guard to get on the team and fill that hole. not the same type of player as bibbs at all is bird but still opens up a roster spot.

Great news!

It's a foot in the door

Bibbs is reportedly signing a 10 day contract with the Clippers

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.
