UNC Players Opt-Out, Tech Roster News

Fuente is giving a first day of practice press conference and there is news from other ACC schools also.

First UNC has players opting out.

Second Tech roster news.

Beck going track only is least surprising but having several players out for any length of time with no spring practice is going to be interesting.

If you are not injured, and you don't play at all in the 4 free games redshirts get now, that is a huge indicator of not ever cracking the 2 deep and/or transferring out. It's literally 4 free games to play snaps in. Saw this a mile away with Beck.

Well slap that on your resume and go get yourself a college coaching job!

Nah... would be nice for the "Beck is Percy Harvin- just injured" crowd to pipe down a bit now though.

I implore you to find where someone actually said this.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

I was being a bit facetious- as you of course know.

Facetious, strawman

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Whatever. It will be nice to move forward without the 84 plus 1 football scholarship model though.

Thank you for your service.

Beck aside... when the next "beast" doesn't see free action against Liberty or Rhode Island, you'll know the deal.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Was wondering how long it'd take you to have your victory lap.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Not long. Thanks for monitoring it.

I monitored it from the time I read "C. Beck" to when I scrolled down one comment.

Agreeing with Wilson. He was always a track guy. Based on the film I saw on Beck (playing against an Abingdon team which didn't have anyone close to DI much less P5 talent), he looked pedestrian. I am glad he has a calling in track. He wasn't a DI football player.

Yep, when I saw his film, I thought his ceiling was a kick returner.

Garbutt hurts.

Prayers to his situation and that everything is okay

Garbutt hurts

Big opportunities for Fuga, all the DE's, and the young corners/Brion Murray. Assuming we play.

Big oof on Bryce Watts. Don't think that move turned out quite as nicely as he would have liked.

How so? He got a degree guaranteed from "the nation's first public university" just by showing up. Sounds like it worked out okay for him. It's not like being at Tech and actually having to work for the degree. /s

Take the over if we actually play UNC this year

I'm just going to assume by default moving forward that no transfer is going to get the eligibility waiver at VT.

Oh we'll have some approved this year all right... with the caveat that if the season doesn't go, they still have burned the year of eligibility...

The transfer flow chart:

Are you transferring to VT -> No ->you've been granted immediate eligibility

Are you transferring to VT -> Yes -> *insert 4354 more steps* -> you have been denied eligibility

Yep. It's absurd

Are you transferring to VT -> Yes -> *no response until days before the first game* -> you have been denied eligibility

Ouch on Garbutt...

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

The strength of the team was going to be returning starters, and they are already down four with Keene, McClease, Farley and Garbutt.

I hear you, but in the case of Keene, we can't always assume every single player stays 4-5 years. In fact we want guys turning pro early if they get drafted where Keene was.

It seems to me that if you're a top 10 team these days you've got to assume a 3 and out model for most of your starters/contributors and just consider it a bonus when one stays longer.

Unless you're Clemson.

Can I just assume that it's now Clem$on when they get so many players to forgo the NFL $?

Don't forget Hazelton and Grimsley/Patterson probably add up to one

Grimsley and Patterson weren't starters. Depth guys, but not starters. Robinson and passes Grimsley and Patterson never really did much.

That's why I said the two combined count as a starter. Robinson wasn't playing near the amount Hazelton and Turner were

Farley and Garbutt are definitely a blow, Keene was great but I think Gallo will fill in nicely with Mitchell being more of a weapon flexed out. McClease came on strong at the end of last year, but King flashed way more upside even as a freshman. Excited to see him and some of the new faces have a bigger role. If one of the downhill power backs can seize some reps and complement King as the slasher, we might really have something in the run game. We've needed a dominant downhill running back for a while.

Are you the resident "I'm still complaining about stuff I complained about six months ago" guy or did you just find out McClease and Keane left?

I think he's just tallying up the attrition since the end of last season when we were all looking ahead to 2020 and getting hype for a team loaded with returning talent.

We literally won't know what the 2 deep will look like until game week and will likely change every week for as long as the season lasts. Only good thing (if you want to call it that) is every team will have that problem.

It'll be chicken salad for as long as the season lasts. A real test of depth and coaching for every program for sure.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

The 2 deep won't mean much this year unfortunately... because there will be VT players that test positive and they won't all be 3rd stringers. Some starters and backups - possibly many- will be missing 10 days after a positive test. Setting up to be a huge shitshow. Might be like the MLB playoffs- whoever has the lefty set up man you've never heard of, wins... could be the best 3rd string team, best use of redshirts, etc. wins this year.

The answer you're looking for is Clemson.

I was hoping this post would say that all of UNC's players were opting out.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

News on the street was that the incoming freshmen were such studs, most on the team were going to be demoted to 2nd team anyway.

\s of course

"If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?"

Their 2021 class is so good they don't even need to field a team this year

Or go to class

yeah but that's every year...

The sheer volume of players opting out is the next big domino, and the initial spike 2-3 weeks after school starts will be what finally does the season in.

The SEC probably still plays though

Wouldn't most of those opting out start doing so now? It's a month from the start of the season and when does practice start (if not already)?

Well Chancellor Woodson from State said at the ACC meeting if they send the freshmen home and classes go 100% online they'll cancel football too. So I was referring more to that being what finally decides it.

But I do think every new player that opts out will make others consider it. And when the lack of safety becomes clear with everyone back on campus even more probably will.

So why is there a link to Maryland football on the Tech 247 page? They're Maryland. Who gives a crap? Maryland doesn't.

Meanwhile little Tua got approved for immediate eligibility, predictably.

Am I the only one who saw the headline and immediately thought, 'Does this mean the UNC players are opting out of attending classes?'

That's standard operating procedure, not news worthy.

Not sure why this is marked sarcastic

Blackshear should just hold up the news story of the outbreak at Rutgers....just saying "this is why I transferred".

We put the K in Kwality

Living in the state of NJ should be reason enough to transfer and get a waiver.

Having spent more than half of my life living in NJ, I totally support this sentiment.

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

I have been to NJ twice. All I can say was the local pizza I got was good and the Red Roof at the Meadowlands was not bad.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

You went to NJ for... pizza?

Lenny's' at the shore is second to none.

Vroom Vroom

But New York is... right there

Correct, which is why there is great New York style pizza in new Jersey.

But they stopped in NJ when they could have continued an extra few miles and been in NYC instead. I don't understand this decision.

NJ pizza is better than Manhattan pizza don't @ me

Ok, fine, but only because this isn't Twitter.

My dad grew up in Ridgewood and he took me to the local pizza place he frequented growing up and it was the best pizza I've ever had to this day.

Nj guy here. I can confirm this. Same with bagels.

It can also take an hour or more to get the last 5 or 10 miles from Northern NJ into NYC. Then it can take you 20 minutes to find a parking place that charges $20 for the first 30 minutes.

It does have some positive features. Pine Barrens, Wildwood Crest, Cape May, Delaware Water Gap ... And a good location for well paying jobs. But the expenses, crowds, political corruption, taxes, [I'll stop here because the next 2 things I have would probably violate community guidelines] make it a place that I cannot wait to get out of. Once our daughter finishes high school, I hope to be living in another state within a year.

By the time football is played again the rosters everywhere will look completely different

Well I guess the 2020 recruiting class will be making waves (one way or another) sooner than we anticipated.

Is coronavirus over yet?

As soon as the season is cancelled, I expect most of the projected high draft guys like Farley to move on the the NFL for next season. Pointless to lose a year; NFL player careers are short already, can't afford to lose a season's salary.

Go Hokies!!

Which mean a lot of guys will go lower than projected due to a larger draft class.

Wait, why? It doesn't change the rules for draft eligibility and in fact the highest projected guys will benefit the most because there won't be additional tape to significantly change the projections.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

At this stage there are about 5 or 6 rounds worth of "projected 3rd or 4th round 2021 draft picks" Many of which would stay in college for the 2021 season after having a so-so 2020 season in college,

if there is no 2020 college season, many of those guys may just roll the dice on actually being drafted in 2021 to get started on a professional career. especially if COVID uncertainty is still strong in the winter/spring.

What's his story again?

Stopped playing for new coach Dana (Ernie McCracken) Holgerson and grad transferred to Miami to be the new program OB1, their only hope

Probably the best thing UVA ever did from my POV.

Houston's QB when Dana Holgerson took the job and left WVU. After 4 games Holgerson had his best players take a redshirt year, including King, so they could tank and be good this year.

Once the season ended he decided to Grad Transfer to Miami.

Doubt they miss him, since Houston will be undefeated this year without him anyways /s
