Dallan Wright Commits to Virginia Tech

The Hokies picked up a verbal commitment from 2020 WR Dallan Wright. Wright took an official visit to Virginia Tech this weekend.

Glad that he is a Hokie, but frustrated with Fuente that the staff has to scramble to fill spots for the 2020 class when attrition was predictable, and perhaps more resources or time could have been invested earlier on, rather than leaning on "it's gonna be a small class".

Also, would like to see Tech get out of the habit of being the only P5 offer for their commits.

Not sure why you were downvoted. Its a reasonable thought process.

Congrats to Dallan! I'm happy when any student athlete decides that VT is where they want to be!

Is coronavirus over yet?

Watch his film. Kid looks like a great late class pickup. Not sure why the lack of offers but definitely looks like he could be a player for us.
Senior Highlights

Tape definitely looks better than his offer list. Not sure about the quality of his competition but he looked like he was always the fastest on the field and rarely had to run that hard. Has a sneaky good stiff arm. Hard to tackle because of a blend of speed elusiveness and some power. Sometimes was just wide open on simple routes, makes me question competition. If those were all senior season he had a ton of TDs last year.

Honestly was also very impressed by his body control and ability to adjust to throws and make some difficult catches.

Crazy athlete with top-end speed and good size. Has some Tre Turner in him.

Not a polished route runner yet - but may not have the coaching.

"Dick to Hyman? DICK TO HYMAN!" - Guy in Lane Stadium crowd when Richard Johnson hit Josh Hyman on reverse pass in 2004.

I get the frustration with the 2020 class because it appears that strategic mistakes were made. Seriously. We. All. Get. It.

That said, actually I don't think it's at all abnormal to have a spot or two open for late offers. LSU took Dwight McGlothern (sp?) in January and UGA is making a push for DJ Lundy. Additionally, I believe the number of P5 offers for our signees had been increasing since Fuente took over until the 2020 class (at least based on the graphics OXVT tweets out- though that can quickly venture into the whole increasing number of offers across the board and commitable offers discussion).

Ultimately there are two perspectives you can take on the 2020 class: 1) it was mostly an anomaly resulting from some combination of the toxic locker room in 2018, poor performance in 2018, Foster's impending retirement, underperforming staff who were let go, etc. OR 2) it's indicative of a larger downward trend under Fuente and will continue until he is fired.

Ultimately there are two perspectives you can take on the 2020 class Fuente's past two seasons at VT: 1) it was mostly an anomaly resulting from some combination of the toxic locker room in 2018, poor performance in 2018, Foster's impending retirement, underperforming staff who were let go, etc. OR 2) it's indicative of a larger downward trend under Fuente and will continue until he is fired.

No one knows if 2018/early 2019 was the start of a trend or an inflection point. It's going to be an interesting few seasons, whatever happens.

Twitter me

It's not like they were sitting down doing nothing. I presume they had targets that just haven't panned out.

I haven't looked at the 2020 class, but in 2018 and 2019 it looked like there were only four guys for whom that no P5 offer was true, and one of them was Christian Darrisaw. I don't think it's as much an issue as people tend to make it out to be.

Offer lists are way overrated these days. Many schools are making 10x the offers than they can actually sign. Some more - even substantially more. Offers are like 50 pt gains or drops in the stock now...mostly inconsequential. Honestly I don't know why folks even bother to pay any attention to the vast majority of them.

Yet for all of that, there are still the occasional quality players that don't have many P5 offers who are "diamond in the rough" types who - for whatever reason - have been largely off the grid. This is where coaching/recruiting staffs can really earn their money. Anybody can make offers and put up twitter artwork for every 4* this side of the Mississippi. But find a future starter whom nobody else has picked up on, that's gold.

Well like most data points regarding recruiting, You will find that Clemson and Bama have more players on their teams with legit high P5 offers from peer schools than VT does. VT has more guys on our roster with legit P5 offers than Marshall does. When using large data sets, it is a huge indicator of more talented teams. Sure, there are small examples here and there.

I think people confuse talent with development. Clemson and Bama are good because they bring in more talent and therefore have more opportunity to find the players that develop into starters and game changers. VT is kind of at the other end, they take more risk on talent in hopes that they can find a player that develops into a starter or game changer. The point is, there's a lot more "talent waste" for VT to churn through then a Clemson or Bama. I think it's also why I don't get my panties in an uproar over the transfer portal.

I'm not sure what this has to do with offer lists or anything I wrote, but...ok.

Agreed. Offer Lists are the end all be all when arguing recruiting is "improved", until they are not.

Dallan had 1500 yards and 25 TD catches his senior year en route to Saluda winning state in South Carolina 2A ball.

This is an interesting commit. His athletic ability with balance, speed and ball skills look high level. He didn't have to run efficient routes at that level and will clearly be something for him to work on, but if he wants to he clearly has the feet to do it.

I like basketball players as receivers in today's game due to the usual great balance and ball skills that results from playing basketball. This might be a sneaky good late commit.

I am still trying to dig up the backstory here and find out what level of competition he faces, but he looks like a big time athlete on film. He has some bad habits that will need to be coached out (MOVING EARLY BEFORE THE SNAP) but he has some big time athleticism.

Being around the program that wins a national championship automatically makes everyone in the region better.

I mean, isn't that how Clemson winning titles was good for VT?

Looks like Isaiah Ford type athlete to me - combo of balance and ball skills.

Apparently a lot of the backstory was that he wanted to play basketball before really buying into football later in high school.

SC 2A isn't the best competition, but there are some established 2A programs are pretty consistently good and Saluda beat a lot of them.

Eye test is what I am all about. Sometimes I am right (Teller, Baron) and sometimes I am wrong (Nijman, John Harris.)

I always feel better when I can watch a whole game instead of just highlights. That paints a much better picture.

I don't think you were wrong about Nijman. He was largely derailed by injuries IMO - and you can't really predict injuries.

Yeah, I wouldn't count Nijman as a bad eval for anyone who predicted he would be great. He was a multi-year starter in spite of all the injuries and has bounced around the NFL for awhile as well.

I wouldn't really say he's bounced around the NFL for 'awhile'. He's only been in the league for a season and has been consistently on the Packers' Practice Squad before being called up to their Active Roster before being placed on IR due to injury.

Vroom Vroom

Yeah that wasn't a good description of his time in the NFL in my post above. My point was he's collecting checks from the NFL right now, and maybe will collect them for awhile longer. For some reason I thought he had graduated in 2017 and had been the in NFL for two years.

I was wrong. I didn't think he would ever play at VT. One of the worst films I have watched. At best, I thought he would be a project. In a few months he took a huge leap. Darrisaw did the same thing but I thought he had a much better chance than Nijman.

My apologies for saying you were right...(kidding).

I was projecting and assuming you saw what I saw.

Now I thought he had a 0.0% chance of being a DE for having no twitch (among other things and took heat for saying so) but had the right type of athleticism that he could be a very good OT. And I still think he could have been if not for some pretty bad injuries.

I still remember Stiney at a recruiting night saying he kept showing Nijman pictures of Duane Brown...

Re: Level of competition. James Mitchell played 2A in Va (Union High School). Would say SC 2A is at least that level (if not better).

When I was in high school, Giles dominated. They even won a state championship. Now they're losing to Narrows. What happened to them?

Toxic locker room culture. Upperclassmen getting recruited over. Transfer portal. Not enough PHS offers. Coaches playing kids who hurt the team more than help for too long, even though the fans were all convinced those players were dark horse Heisman candidates.

Stuff like that.

You forgot they need more money too

"You don't stare into a rearview mirror"

Maybe people got wise to the 1890s offense they hang their hat on.

Single wing! James Monroe right across the border in WV actually followed the same blueprint back when they were really good. It even helped them beat Bluefield once or twice who is regularly the class of AA in WV. For it to work, though, you need 10 bulldozers and one kid who is really fast.

Blasphemer!!!

Them's fightin' words.

There are many different reasons Giles hasn't enjoyed the same success recently. None of which are the single wing.

If you play it, they will win.

Our 1890s offence has won us 4 state championships so it ain't the wing that's causing the problem

Cut and divide it all right in two

I hated playing Giles. To set our defense the scout O practiced without a football. If you defended it weekly it wasn't too bad but to see it once every year or two made it tough.

I feel for all our past players that had to face chinballs every year.

It's a thing of beauty run correctly. That's a good way to practice against because half the time you won't know where the ball is until it's too late.

If you play it, they will win.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used." -The BoD

Best approach: tackle anyone who can have the ball. Which means, just tackle everyone.

There are worse ideas.

And seriously EVERYONE. I caught a pass and ran for about 15 yards as OL running single wing. They never expected it. And neither did I.

If you play it, they will win.

Really like him. Got in a fight last year that caused him to be suspended for half of a season and that scared a lot of teams away. Didn't do any major camps and as others mentioned, was really only focusing on basketball up until his senior year.

I prefer to make my entire evaluation of a recruit in the 10 seconds it takes me to find out their stars and offer list, and you just ruined that for me.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

If he gets LA's stamp of approval, that's all I need

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

This is exactly what I read in an article a couple weeks ago. He seemed more interested in basketball his junior year when it's big school football recruiting season but killed it his senior year in football. He got a huge bump late in the recruiting cycle and would have been even more of a bump if he did the camps.

He got five games for fighting? My high school got into a bench clearing brawl that the cops had to get involved with, and only four players were suspended for one game.

I can't remember which teams (maybe Lebanon and George Wythe) got into a huge brawl during the post game handshake during my SO year of HS. When we played Chilhowie, we were told that we were not allowed to have a post game handshake because it had been banned by the Hogohegee District. It was surreal.

there's really a Hogohegee distrct?

Wait im wrong there's still a hogoheegee its just
totally different now
High schools included are
Chilhowie
Patrick Henrey (Glad Spring)
Holston
Northwood
Rural Retreat

Cut and divide it all right in two

They realigned the district a couple years ago the 3 river district was Giles Radford Glenvar Floyd East Mont and Auburn now its Giles Radford Glenvar Floyd James River Alleghany and Carroll County

Cut and divide it all right in two

George Wythe is now in the mountain empire district along with.
Grayson😃
Fort Chiswell
Bland
Galaxy
Auburn

Cut and divide it all right in two

Back then it was Patrick Henry-Glade Spring, Holston, Chilhowie, Northwood, (Saltville), Rural Retreat, and George Wythe. Lebanon would bounce back and forth between the Highlands District (AA back then) and the Hogo all the time.

The Highlands back then was Abingdon, Virginia High, Lee, Gate City, and Marion after John Battle left. The Southwest District was Graham, Grundy, Tazewell, Richlands, and Carroll County. I only played against Carroll County and Tazewell from the Southwest. In the early 80s, Abingdon, Virginia High, Battle, Gate City, Marion, Patrick Henry, Graham, Grundy, Richlands, and Tazewell were all AA schools and formed the old Southwest District. I believe Lee County consolidating broke that up. Now, every school but Abingdon is either big school A or little school A level. For regionals, Abingdon has to play teams from Roanoke, Danville/Martinsville, and the NRV.

Now the southwest is
Graham
Richlands
Tazewell
Virginia High
Lebanon
Marion

The mountain 7 is probably the best district in SWVA. It has
Abingdon
Lee County
John Battle
Gate City
Union
Central Wise
Ridgeview

As long as he makes all the wright catches I am good with this him regardless of how many recruiticorn stars he has...

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:

I am happy we are able to build a relationship with a recruit in less than 5-6 years. Glad we are catching up to every other team in this regard.

That sir, is one coffee-spitting, guffaw-inducing, deeply dunked donut of sarcasm you just posted. Thank you for producing my first eye-rolling belly laugh of the day. Never change my HT amigo.

Really excited about this guy. He looks like a great athlete on film. His path to playing time, however, will be determined by his ability to block on the outside. That's processed out a lot of WR's under Fuente and it will continue to do so.

Without getting Obi Obialo (grad transfer from Marshall, went to Oklahoma), I think there's an experience void at WR. Young guys gotta grow up and develop quick if Hooker, or whoever's throwing, is gonna be able to be successful. The talent is all there.

I am really excited to see Bowick this spring. I liked his HS film, and he looked like a monster during spring game warm ups. Seriously, he looked bigger than Mitchell. He could give them a thumper outside.

Not sure he'll be ready in time. Pretty major knee injury back in the early fall

Damn I had no idea about this.

Ready for Fall????

Should be. Happened in late September if I remember correctly and it was something ligament related, so shouldn't be a full year recovery

Knee injury? What?

Bowick was an early enrollee, too. He should be pretty well versed in the offense. Hopefully he can build some confidence with Hooker and become a solid option.

I think once they switched to Hooker, you saw a drop off in the production from Robinson and Smith. Hooker clearly wasn't as comfortable with them, which is understandable. Can't rely on two guys and a TE this year though.

If someone commits to VT I say great and wish them the best. I hope they reach their highest potential and play their best. I don't covet other school's recruits. I just hope we kick their a$$.

I just got around to seeing this guys highlights. He's got a smooth acceleration and the ability to stay on his feet. I feel like he may get a look at RB with his break-out abilities (though he is taller thant he average RB).
