Legend.

God damn, I'm so happy for him. Anyone here who isn't is a liar and a sad person.

What a game. Shows what good coaching, scheme, buy in, and recruiting can look like. Knocking off Bama! Wow

VB born, class of '14

Look at the 2020 starting 11 on offense. Almost all of them are NFL-caliber players.

What a waste by Corn and Fuente.

Go get it Hooker. You deserve it.

If you feel the leather in your hand let it rip.

Go get it son!

We should all be cheering for Hendon!

From the 2018 VT-uva game-"This is when LEGENDS are made!"

Thank you!

He's always throwing accurate,
Like he wants to score.
And every wide out that he meets,
catches one pass more.

(There he throws again)
When he's passing
'Neath the yellow stands
He'll score some points
(There he throws again)
When he's throwing

I kinda like the way,
I like the way he scores

'Cause He's the Tennessee guy, oh
He's the Tennessee guy

But he used to be ours

He throws scores

Congrats, Hendon!

Fuente was at TCU game apparently.

And Fuente was trending on Twitter. I genuinely hope Hendon brings home the Heisman. Very happy for him. Really bad (new) stigma for Pry to try and recruit with.

So here's the cool thing about this...we still support Hendon, and he still supports VT. That's the brotherhood and the family connection that keeps Blacksburg building #Groundup

btw, about Twitter trends:

Trends are determined by an algorithm and, by default, are tailored for you based on who you follow, your interests, and your location.

So Fuente's name showed up for you because of relevance to you, not necessarily everyone in the country/world.

An all time talent to go with an all time name

Here lies It's a Stroman Jersey I Swear, surpassed in life by no one because he intercepted it.

No, Justin and Brad look way worse than that now.

So I guess Fuente could recruit Heisman QB candidates.

...and run their career into the ground.

If you play it, they will win.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used." -The BoD

Doesn't seem to have worked this way on Hooker.

I mean Fuente literally benched him lol

I just sit on my couch and b*tch. - HokieChemE2016

TBF, Fuente tried to run his career into the ground,. He pulled Hooker back from the portal once. Kept trying to make Hooker 2nd string to less talented QBs. And also bad mouthed him in the press.

But, luckily Hooker was able to escape and find himself at a P5 school with an offensive HC looking for a QB to run his offense.

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

That's a little bit revisionist. Hooker went to UT and didn't win the starting job until QB1 got hurt last year. Granted he took every advantage of the opportunity and the UT staff has developed and utilized him well. Doesn't hurt that he also has some really skill position players to support him.

what did I say was revisionist? Everything I said is accurate. Everything you said is accurate too, except the revisionist part.

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

Implying that Hooker was the QB that Heupel was looking for, he brought in Milton from Michigan to run his offense. Milton sucked it up and Hooker took over after he got injured.

But yes, everything you said was technically correct, the best kind of correct.

Yes, I am technically correct but the opposite is asinine. Why would Huepel bring in Hooker if he didnt think he could run his offense?

Huepel brought in multiple QBs that he thought could run his offense. Hooker was one of them. He didn't win the starting job right away but to suggest that Heupel brought in Hooker thinking he was not going to run his offense is so backwards.

Huepel internal thoughts about Hooker: "I want to offer Hooker a scholarship, not because I think he can run my offense or be successful in my offense, but because I need a warm body to sit next to the QB that I think can run my offense." OK. Sure.

Edit: Pruitt, not Huepel... And further Huepel retained Hooker when it was clear it would be easy to move in a different direction, so just change "bring in" to "retain" and it's still pretty accurate. Thanks for the correction!

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

Pruitt actually brought Hooker in, not Huepel.

OK. That's fair. I inadvertently revised the history on which coach brought him in, but it is still true that he was brought in to run the Tennessee offense and then further retained by Huepel.

My point was that he was good enough that an SEC school brought him in to run an SEC offense after Fuente ran him out. Fuente squandered his ability when other major P5 schools could see that he could be a major contributor.

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

Tennessee had him slated as a backup. Fuente had him slated as having to compete for the job.

So your comment does have a healthy dose of hindsight.

Fuente wasn't exactly a salesman, which is a basic requirement to be a college head football coach.

The news accounts says Hooker was brought in by Pruitt to compete. Heupel then brought in his own recruit Milton to compete during Spring Practice and competed with Hooker until being named the starter before game 1. Obviously the history of Heupel knowing Milton and the way he was brought in suggested Heupel would go with Milton, but to suggest Hooker was brought in as a backup is not accurate.

Hooker adds experience to a Tennessee quarterback competition that is open entering spring practice.

A 15-game career starter at Virginia Tech, Hooker will compete with Harrison Bailey, who started the final three games of his true freshman season in 2020, along with four-star signee Kaidon Salter and Brian Maurer, who started four games in 2019 before sliding down the depth chart this season.

Knox News

Then-Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt and his staff went hard after Hendon. It helped that there was a bit of familiarity. Hendon couldn't visit anywhere in person, but he'd seen Knoxville on a recruiting visit back in 2015. He liked the idea of playing for Tennessee quarterbacks coach Chris Weinke, who won the 2000 Heisman Trophy. Most of all, he liked the wide-open nature of the Vols QB room.
....
The new staff was led by Josh Heupel. And the former UCF head coach chose to bring in his own guy. Tennessee added Michigan quarterback transfer Joe Milton midway through spring practice.

Hooker, again, had a battle on his hands. And he lost.

Milton won the starting job exiting fall camp. Hooker, a fifth-year senior, would sit once again.

247 Sports

In any regard, we're losing the view of the forest by focusing in on the trees. Fuente drove him away. Tennessee brought him in to run the Pruitt/Weinke offense. Heupel brought in his own QB to compete with Hooker to run his offense.

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

Hooker committed to Jeremy Pruitt two weeks before he was fired. Heupel decided to honor the offer. Who knows if it's because he thought he'd fit or he was just trying to hold onto players since he was hired in January.

"That move was slicker than a peeled onion in a bowl of snot." -Mike Burnop

Thanks. I had not remembered the timeline and appreciate the correction.

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

Fuente still thinks Ryan Willis and Braxton Burmeister are better QBs than Hendon Hooker.

EDIT: Honestly, this should be in every "Hatin' On" ever. [X] coach thinks ^^that^^. It's embarrassing enough for anyone.

Fuente was unable to gauge talent and unable to develop talent. It was his downfall

And now we watch Wells...............fuck!

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

If Wells would stop staring down recievers he'd be a lot better ... also maybe take a bit off the short throws

If he could consistently get to a 2nd or 3rd read, we'd probably have at least 2 more TDs every game. The amount of times he didn't see a guy running wide tf open against Liberty on Saturday were numerous. And I'm saying wide open without a defender within 5-10 yards of him with plenty of time to throw, and it wasn't the first time this year I've noticed him just not seeing the open guy.

This is my school
This is home

Also, get rid of the ball fast if you're in the end zone.

Pretend you're in outer space. Get it out of there. You CANNOT get caught back there, even if you have no line at all.

That safety was on the playcall. Wells had no time to throw and if he just chucked it away to avoid the safety it would have probably been grounding, which would have still been a safety. And if it wasn't a safety, it had no chance of gaining any yards, which is basically a wasted down.

The way Liberty was able to rush Wells, he needed to be rolled out of the pocket to give him an extra couple of seconds and/or put him in position to throw it away. I would have rather seen another run play that deep in our end, tbh. If we are going to waste a down, waste it with a chance of something positive happening and eliminate the chance of something very negative (safety, pick 6, strip sack in the endzone) from happening.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to watch the replay. Will have a look later.

Yeah Wells gets a lot of flack for holding the ball too long (and he absolutely does) but by the time the wide open guy was in a position to have the ball thrown (the few times it happened), Wells was already surrounded by blue.

We need to improve his awareness, his protection and his receivers. All of them need serious work.

I can only think of one where there was a guy wide open and he had time to throw and he threw to the underneath receiver for a short gain instead of the huge one. That one hurt to watch.

But it's so fun

uva - the taint of the ACC

I'll take a fifteen yard penalty for piling on.
Another lifetime achievement award for Fuente - sending a Heisman candidate into the portal twice. Don't think that will duplicated in the next fifty years.
And let's not gloss over that Fuente recruited another superb QB in Jerrod Evans and yep, ran him off after one year.
Oh yeah, it is so fun

The LewDew, Professional Golf Bum

From the time period, I heard Evans didn't focus on school and knew he was going to be a one and done from academics.

Another lifetime achievement award for Fuente - sending a Heisman candidate into the portal twice

If anything was a nail in Fuente's coffin as a future coach, what Hendon is doing now is it. If you can't take even 25% advantage of this kids talent, you should not coach. Period.

Pain is Temporary, Chicks Dig Scars
Glory is Forever, Let's Go Hokies!!

The lid on the coffin was sticking with Cornelsen. I really believe that if Fuente had parted ways with Corny after 2018 and hired a competent OC he could have saved his career. But not being able or willing to make those moves is ultimately what makes him a bad HC.

Onward and upward

This right here. If he was able to part ways with Corn a couple years ago he probably would still be coaching. But that's what happens when you hire your best friend and bestman to be your OC.

If you don't want to recruit clowns, don't run a clown show.

"I want to punch people from UVA right in the neck." - Colin Cowherd

This is partly true, but if you can't make the hard (or in this case, obvious) choices in life, you don't get to stay a big whistle.

Loyalty is important, but winning is ultimately king.

Also, what profiteth a man to recruit blue chips, and then lose them to the portal? The test of Fuente was keeping the talent he recruited, and he failed miserably at that.

this brings up another interesting point - a lot of people really hammer on Fuente for his inability to recruit. I don't really follow recruiting that closely but it seemed like Fuente was able to get some guys in the door, he just couldn't keep them in the fold. I imagine that has much more to do with his coaching staff than with him. I'd be curious to see Fuente coaching somewhere else with a new, competent, coaching staff who can recruit and coach. But, again, I think his biggest failure was the inability (or unwillingness) to surround himself with competent coaches and ultimately that is what separates the good coaches from the bad ones.

To be fair, neither Hendon Hooker nor Jalen Hyatt would be the players they are today if they had stayed/had come to VT.

If HH stayed, he probably would have been QB2 last year, for... reasons. Had he gotten on, we'd maybe get 1 more win, which maybe would be enough to keep Fu this year.

If HH stayed again and started at VT this year, and we still had CornFu, we maybe get 6 or 7 wins, HH goes undrafted and is out of football by fall '23.

I'm thrilled for him; am a temporary, 1 year Vols fan; and am loving watching him reach his potential.

Also, fuck Justin Fuente and Brad Cornelsen. Everyday, to infinity and beyond, fuck those two motherfuckers.

Spot on. Makes you wonder how many QB's missed an NFL shot because of their coaches and how many mediocre who shouldn't be playing in the league because of it.

Hokies fan since 1998

Had Hooker stayed, I think he'd have been QB1.

May have even saved Fuente's career at VT, or at least prolonged it.

But Hooker wouldn't have beaten Alabama.

No way. The writing was on the wall after the Clemson game and I doubt he would have stayed. He already went to the TP once and backed away for reasons, no way he would have stuck around a 2nd time.

Yeah, he was outta there. I'm saying if Fuente hadn't stepped on his wang and failed to keep Hendon on board.

Pride really fucked with Fuente.

That's pride fucking with you. Fuck pride. Pride only hurts. It never helps. You fight through that shit.

Marsellus Wallace

Pretty sure keeping Fuente directly led to HH leaving. He hit the portal 2 days after that bizarre press conference to announce that we were making no changes.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

I'm not sure if this is completely true. Hendon never had a WR with Hyatt's skillset. We had a solid TE, RB, and possession WR. Just think about the total offensive package: Tre, Jalin, Khalil, James, Raheem and the OLINE was really good. CornFu probably wastes all this talent with jetsweeps and QB powers but the potential was definitely there....😭

Having listened to that goddamned rocky top bullshit for 4 3 (I was excited for a hot second) I'm solidly on the Hook for Heisman and rooting for another natty in knoxville.

What a fucking waste. I hope cornfu realizes what fuckups they are.

EDIT: Just saw this on the four-letter website in the College football Week 7 highlights article:

Heisman Five
1. Tennessee QB Hendon Hooker

Late in 2020, Hooker was benched at Virginia Tech and essentially shown the door. Since then, he's blossomed into one of the most prolific QBs in the country, throwing for 385 yards and five touchdowns on Saturday, and is now deserving of his spot atop the Heisman rankings. And what's happened to Virginia Tech, you ask? Well, rumor has it the program folded, all records of its existence have been erased by the government, and Frank Beamer and Bud Foster now travel the country in a van solving mysteries.

this completely exemplifies why the Portal is so critical for players. Get out of a place where you don't fit or can't get a chance at and into places where you can.

uva - the taint of the ACC

I've been a big fan of Hooker since the Miami game, I thought he was the clear best QB on our roster and I was pissed that he got treated so poorly season after season. I'm so happy that he's finding success and showing out the past two seasons.

I've been telling anyone who will listen that I'm a die-hard Tennessee fan this year because of HH. I put on my most Tennessee orange shirt last Saturday and was blasting Rocky Top in my apartment. I've watched almost as many Vols games all the way through as Hokie games. I'm a Hendon fan forever. I was planning on taking him 50-1 for Heisman preseason when I moved to Illinois, and I was telling other people to jump on that as well. But the move got delayed and I got it at 11-1. It's now +480 or so.

Should we go do read receipts on the people who were claiming Burmeister was better than Hooker before 2021? I had been off of TKP for a couple months, then came back and I felt like I was taking crazy pills.

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

Should we go do read receipts on the people who were claiming Burmeister was better than Hooker before 2021?

For real, there was a lot of cope on TKP when HH left. I didn't predict that retrospect would make it THIS obvious, but it WAS pretty obvious to me that HH was the better qb, and drove me nuts when people would try to say they were relatively the same in the aftermath of him declaring to the portal.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

At least for me, it wasn't clear to me if HH was going to be cleared medically for the 2021 season. Made it an easy decision to go with BB if that was the case.

But that wasn't the primary argument most people were making. They were saying BB was a straight up better QB than HH. It was absolutely ridiculous.

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

I don't think most people were making that argument. If anything, it was split. But it seems more people thought Hooker was better:
Hooker enters portal 2020
HOOKER KEEPS HIS STARTING JOB
BB Transfers to VT

Analyzing Burmeister

This had the most comments about BB being better than Hooker, but was an article suggesting BB was a top 100 athlete in CFB:
BRAXTON BURMEISTER #93 ON BRUCE FELDMAN'S FREAK'S LIST

A lot of people thought QP was the better QB though:
HH enters portal 2019

And if you do go through the comments, you'll see TKP's French routinely said Hooker was the best QB on the team. So, TKP staff was on record suggesting that Hooker had the most upside, was the best passer, etc.

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

....phew nothing super incriminating from Past Beard there. That's a relief. I would not have remembered my takes from around that time period.

I thought it was pretty apparent all along what a very solid QB HH is. All the throwing, running, leadership and field awareness traits. A couple on field glimpses of BB, QP and RW definitely confirmed HH standing. The only thing that perplexed me about HH was that surprisingly very cold night game with Clemson when he couldn't function and play. I admittedly overreacted to that incident, as did many others, I think (CJF) Good for HH, he did what was best for him, proved the doubters wrong, and BEAT BAMA. Good for you HH, go get all you can. I don't remember who, but I seem to recall a spirited debate between a few TKPers about whether you could convert Burmeister to WR. With that backdrop, this made me chuckle.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

One decision severely damaged the program, the other just didn't elevate it

Curry is haunting because of what he became, but nobody was recruiting him. He was such a low rated recruit that Dell wanted to pay for him to walk on instead of going to a small program on scholarship.

Hendon was a 4* who came to campus, showed how talented he was, and then was continually passed over for clearly less talented players before being run out of town. Doing what he's doing now, possibly winning the Heisman, and maybe making the playoffs at a rival school while we flounder, we still don't have a Heisman, and we've never made the playoffs is definitely more haunting.

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

Yeah the greatest player's kid in your schools history should be offered a scholly. I'm so glad that I'm not a VT bball fan🀣

Hooker would not have become what he is now if he stayed at tech. Completely different system and level of talent around him.

More than likely Curry would have still become Curry. There's also the added factor that his dad is Dell. Steph not coming here in my mind is the equivalent of if Vick had decided to go elsewhere and we'd all be sitting here saying "what if?"

Gobble Till You Wobble

Curry was just an unfortunate recruiting decision that is amplified because Nigel Munson busted. People forget that he was a very highly regarded recruit when we signed him, and it just didn't work out. That kind of shit happens all the time.

Hooker was a highly sought after recruit who showed he could play while he was here and our coaches pushed him out because they wanted to go with a guy who couldn't hack it at Oregon and was almost immediately converted to WR at San Diego State.

One was unfortunate. The other was a microcosm of a myriad of issues surrounding a terrible talent evaluation system at a program in free fall. Yeah, the Fuente fuckup will haunt us for a very long time.

This is my school
This is home

100% dead dead horse, but not offering Steph Curry a hoops scholarship at the time can be defended on raw basketball principles- yes. He was not a 4-5 star recruit, he was not as highly rated as Munson. Sure. The issue I have always had is that we were dickish to his Mom, and did not approach the bigger picture of offering a kid that was the son of the best player ever here. I'm sure there were better prospects than Alston Smith, but Beamer "gets it" which is why he is in the hall of fame. For those who say "basketball scholly's are limited" sure they are. Lynn Kidd is going on year 3 on scholly here- so I guess that's not a show stopper? Look at the big picture and we would have an NBA first ballot HOF nba player recruiting for us.

If he had any success, his brother would have come here too. Could have greatly accelerated the arc of the basketball program, and continued the family narrative at VT. He's an icon now, one of the most recognizable celebrities on the planet and would have made a phenomenal ambassador. Single handedly could have fixed VT's PR issues across all sports (we're just not cool). All said and done - could have done for us what Jordan did for UNC, or what Vick could have done for VT had his pro career not been derailed.

Yep- and he could have brokered an under armor deal for VT worth 20X what our Nike deal is.

Bit of beating a dead horse but this article was interesting to read. In particular, I thought the part from the UT QB coach about letting Hooker make line calls was interesting. Trust and coaching vs. "expected outcomes".

Edited 10/25: The second article on NC State's (?) 24/7 page is wild. Explains a lot. Frustrating as hell to hear how VT coaching staff treated him. Thrilled he is getting the opportunity where is is now.

24-7 Article on Hooker's full career

Of course he is. This is tantamount to me officially not being a Heisman candidate.

After careful consideration with my wife and family, I have come to the difficult decision that, if offered the position of Heisman candidate, I would respectfully decline.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

If anyone has addresses for FuCorn I'll be happy to mail glossies of HH to them.

During tonight's Tennessee Kentucky game the announcer said "The best way to keep Hooker from scoring is to keep him on the sideline" and I immediately thought the only coach who's been able to do that is Justin Fuente.

Fuente started the Tennessee like death spiral we're in now and likely won't be out of for 30+ years. I just hope we make a resurgence like they are now

I laugh/cry that my Twitter feed blows up with Fuente references whenever Tennessee and Hooker go off.

Yes,that's the Hokie Bird riding a camel. Why'd you ask?

Not just your Twitter feed, it looks like ESPN is gung ho about bringing up VT whenever Hendon does something good, as-yet-again shown in their Week 9 Highlights and Takeaways

Heisman Five
1. Tennessee QB Hendon Hooker

Four more touchdowns. No turnovers. Hooker just continues to dominate in Josh Heupel's offense, and you have to wonder if Justin Fuente just sits in a dimly lit room staring at a framed photo of Hooker and thinking, "Where did we go so wrong?"

Honestly he probably doesn't even care. I bet he hasn't watched any football at all this fall and is living comfortably and being a dad.

He was spotted at a TCU home game, so he's watched at least one

Just to really enforce the pain, yesterday ESPN was covering how Hendon is now the betting favorite to win the Heisman. Even if he loses out to CJ Stroud (Ohio State QB), they said he will be one of the statistically best non-Heisman winners of all time.

Looking back at this thread is something

I am not sure what to do with my hands now

Most of what i see in there and remember is a lot of well wishes

Most of it, but there is the small contingent of Hooker isn't that good with an overlap into Burmeister is better. Those comments were bad then, they're ridiculous now.

Meh, I stand by everything I said in there.

Also, HokieEnginerd said then it was the most disgusting timeline.

If we only knew how much more disgusting this timeline would get...

I'm surprised I didn't have a single post in that thread TBH

And Hendon has Tennessee at #1 in this season's first CFB playoff rankings

Been reading this thread for almost 3 weeks now and just realized the word Heisman in the title is misspelled. My brain has just been rearranging the letters every time and only noticed it because I was distracted.

My god, I had to scroll up to confirm the misspelling after reading your comment. I, too, hadn't noticed.

Ha! I didn't notice either.

OT: People out there have researched this - called typoglycemia. The brain only really needs the first and last letters to be correct and everything in between can be jumbled.

The brain is amazing-autocorrect is a pale imitation. I didn't notice this one either though I usually have things like that jump out at me (annoyingly so at times). It may be because it's on a message board-same with text; what is really glaring is when it's on an official news site or a corporate communication- internal OR external, In those cases it reeks of lack of professionalism and/or attention to detail. For this reason, my dad -in the days of typewriters- would read every document his secretary typed before signing it with his name-if there were ANY typos it was sent back to be retyped.

Ugh, he tore his ACL against SCar and is done for the year.

This is my school
This is home

That sucks plus they lost the game. That probably ends his Heisman campaign, unfortunately.

Couldn't be too upset bc it was Shane. He's gonna try and build something there and I bet stays there as long as SCAR allows him.

Probably was still okay in the running. He had a great game. Rattler was better (and Tennessee's defense was putrid). I injury closes the door on his campaign.

We put the K in Kwality

Yup they absolutely did not lose due to how the offense and Hooker played. That defense was embarrassing.

Fuckity fuck fuck fuck.

I feared this a lot through out the year. I was rooting so hard for hendon and hearing the news about his ACL made my stomach turn. I feel awful for him.

Really sorry to see Hendon get hurt while having such an awesome year. Prayers for a full and quick recovery. Hoping it doesn't hurt his draft stock too much. Great kid and great talent.

I am still amazed Hooker's banana-shaped leg in the UNC game a year or two ago was nothing serious and he was back in action a week or two later.

This sucks for Hooker. I was really hoping to see him have a shot at the Heisman and then get paid in the NFL.

Looks like I'm back on the Team Chaos bus!
