My Favorite Dad Story

With both of my parents being Hokies, I have a ton of Tech sports related memories of my dad and I, but I think this is probably my absolute favorite one:

In 1998 we got tickets to watch Tech play Temple. Our seats were about one or two rows from the top of the East stands, so it took forever to get up there on the account that my parents had to make sure their 8 and 4-year-olds made it up there without doing anything dumb and/or getting lost.

Shai Mckenzie

Shai, a 4-star RB out of Pennsylvania, recently tweeted his top 5. Looks like there is some bright news in a day of gloomy weather--we made the cut. We're up against mostly ACC schools, GT, PITT, FSU, and the token SEC program, Arkansas. I like our chances. This kid reminds me of a Darren Evans; big, bruising, punishing back with decent top-end speed. I'd guess our stiffest competition will come from PITT, his hometown program. Keep the faith Hokie Nation, we'll get ours.

#IwasatVTbefore there was a Chipotle in Blacksburg
#IwasatVTbefore there was a stoplight on West Campus Drive

I've noticed that the threads that let us relive our wonder years in Blacksburg are always fun and popular. I started it off, let's see how many we can get. Comments from the older (no offense) Hokies will be really interesting to see.

New recruiting has come to town

This is more of a public service announcement.

The recruiting strategy in Backsburg has changed, we as fans do not understand it at first, but we need to trust it.

We have 3 former SEC recruiters now on staff (Loeffler, Grimes, and Shane) and Stiney running the recruiting operations. We are going to be involved with kids that previously may have not looked at us, that being said, we are going to have more moments like yesterday when everyone stops work and listens in on the radio to hear what college a 17 year old chooses. But you know what, schools like Bama, USC, TX, LSU have been experiencing this for years. We are just now entering the arena.

Pandora's Lunch Pail (A Continuation of the Mythical Beast D)

It all began with the Exumtaur.
The infamous combination was the first instance of netherworld identities attached to this group of defenders that arguably are some of the most charismatic players we’ve seen take the field in the orange and maroon. I was thinking about various other ways to brand the defense this year, when it hit me: what are the other mythological creatures within Bud Foster’s lunch pail Pandora’s Box? I did some half-assed research on a sketchy website, and with help from www.gods-and-monsters.com (created by a guy named Mike who I’m willing to bet has an affinity for dreamcatchers) I came up with a few new mythological associations.

Mason Rudolph

http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=9159319

3* QB Mason Rudolph from SC is announcing tomorrow at noon between VT, LSU, and OK State. He visited Blacksburg this past weekend. It's also worth noting that David Cornwell and Jacob Park visited Alabama this past weekend to try and earn "commitable offers" from Nick Saban.

I believe that Mason will pick the Hokies tomorrow. Although he doesn't have the "star" power that Cornwell and Park might have, he certainly is a very good prospect - - check out his junior highlights above.

Tyrod Taylor worthy?

I really just needed to know if Im the only one that feels Tyrod Taylor deserves to have his name and number on one of those flags above the student section honoring past Hokie greats.

Film Vault: The Untouchables

I stumbled on this GameDay segment on The Untouchables while sifting through HokieTapes' massive film collection.

0:00 - Remember when we called him "Baby Face" Fowler? No?

0:15 - "Kindred programs..." I can't tell you how many emails I received from Texas A&M fans who wanted Virginia Tech to come to the SEC with them, and be their divisional rival. After Maryland left for the Big Ten, one followed up with me to say, "you missed your chance."

0:39 - R. C. Slocum. That's all.

Marcus Davis Moves Across the Street

He was released by the Giants and signed by the Jets....what a downgrade. Im pretty sure former Tech receiver David Clowney played for the Jets.

VT Coaching Staff as 24 Characters

Well folks, it looks like 24 is coming back for a limited run season. I am freakin pumped, I need some Jack Bauer back in my life. Naturally, the question everybody is wondering is if the VT coaching staff was cast for 24, who would they play? I offer my humble suggestions below. Feel free to let me know what you think.

Adding fuel to the fire

Dr.Saturday, a popular college football blog, released the Vegas odds on week one match-ups. How'd we stack up to Bama? According to the experts, we're 22 point underdogs. If that doesn't motivate the boys, I don't know what will. In the popular words of Rodney Dangerfield, "I\We get no respect!" The national perception of our program (at the moment) should add fuel to the fire...let's go get 'em birds!

Spring Risers and Fallers

We all know about Jonathan McG and Brandon Facyson. But who else impressed you this spring? On the other hand, who were the biggest disappointments?

Riser: Devin VanDyke. He made plays all spring. He had a few highlights in the spring game, including stuffing Trey Edmunds in a goal line situation, and later blowing up Michael Holmes behind the line of scrimmag in the 2nd half. He has that ability to knife through the A-gap - - a common characteristics of our best Mikes including Vince Hall and Jack Tyler. Although they are not the fastest guys on the field, they all had a very quick first step, could diagnose the play in a hurry, and spent alot of time behind the line of scrimmage.

Offseason Boredom - picture ideas??

Spring football is over. We'll spend the rest of this week obsessing over the details of the spring game and practice...but then what? NBA playoffs? Baseball? Golf? ...seriously...we all know those aren't drinking sports.

How about a series of doctored photos showing The Frankinator with different hair styles (like we did with the coaching hair mash-ups a while back). Here's a few examples: Frank with Bieber's "old" do. Frank with Donald Trump's signature do. Frank with Ace Ventura's...etc.

Just the idea guy (i.e. have no knowledge of photoshop or whatever you guys use on your internet machines).

Your ACC Football/Game of Thrones Mashup

Editor's Note: Bumped to the front because I love this show (haven't read the books) and it's an amazing effort by Wartooh.

Season Three of Game of Thrones is well underway and the Virginia Tech Spring Game is this Saturday. Let's stretch some analogies! As the ACC expands its ranks to 14 teams this season, we find more than a few parallels.

House Targaryen - Virginia Tech

24/7 Recruiting Predictions

JC Shurburtt over at 24/7 posted his predictions (free article) for a lot of the top talent, and here's how it played out:

VT - Dashawn Hand (89% of staff there agrees!!), Jalyn Holmes, Jacob Park, Travon McMillian, Raymon Minor, CJ Reavis, Ricky Walker

UVA - Andrew Brown, Derrick Nnadi, Jeremiah Clarke, JJ Jackson, Jamil Kamara,

Others of note:

Elijah Hood to UNC
Dominque Booth to Tenn
Damian Prince to FSU
Kentavius Street to UGA
David Cornwell to Alabama

These are just educated guesses (had Caleb Henderson going to Mich State, whoops), but still neat to see guys in "the recruiting know" make these picks.
