I don't believe those calling for Frank to hang it up after next season understand the state of the program. We are on a precipice right now, and are approaching Mack Brown levels of fucking a program over post-coaching change. VT football might already be beyond quick repair, and Whit has to realize it.

Oy. One year of coaching experience ten years ago? No thank you. I had to look for ten minutes to even find confirmation that happened. I'd rather have someone who has never played a down for VT but knows how to coach their position at the P5 level.

Hold up.

Let me clarify my statement. I believe Frank is gone after this season either way. I also believe he should be gone either way. It's time.

I was responding to the comment that it has already come to the point that Whit will have to force Frank out. I believe that stepping down might be Frank's idea if he fails to keep the bowl streak alive. If we make a bowl (no sure bet, and I agree with your sentiments about what that implies about us as a program) then I think Frank will lobby to get another season.

At no point was I saying what I think should happen. As to that, Frank needs to go.

This. People said Chris Petersen was a Boise State lifer, and I get way less a sense of permanence from Harsin that I did from Petersen.

Yeah, that's exactly where I'd put them. If anything, they were the Oregon of college basketball: dangerous as all hell without ever actually winning the big one.

Was Marquette really top level? One conference championship and one elite eight appearance under Buzz. I think that translates more to an established "on the doorstep" coach, which could be either aa midmajor who is tearing it up or a P5 who is doing well in their conference but would be a dark horse for the playoffs.

I agree with you that it will be an established, winning head coach. Whit isn't gambling on a coordinator, I don't think. To be honest, I think Richt and RichRod fit my description a little better than yours, actually. Always a step below the highest level. Kelly having so much BCS experience plus NFL experience puts him at the top of the totem pole. And it still wouldn't surprise me if Whit landed him.

I'm not 100% sold on that. If we make a bowl, I think Frank tries to make a play for another season. But if we put up our first losing season since '92, I think Frank might willingly step aside of his own accord.

To all of the above who pointed this out, good point. I wasn't really thinking about how infrequently we play Atlantic opponents. Morris would face Clemson more as the head coach of Notre Dame than of VT.

Yeah, but... Arkansas. I mean, Arkansas is on its way to becoming Vanderbilt Redux under Bielema. This was supposed to be a gimme win for Jones.

And as for turnover and difficult coaching searches, rationally I agree with you 100%. But there is no overestimating Dave Hart's ineptitude. It would not surprise me to see him pull the trigger on a losing season.

I don't know if he would coach against Clemson. Everything I have heard about Morris paints him as a very loyal guy. Would be like Bud taking an ACC head job.

I honestly believe Whit will force him out and make it look like a mutual decision. Frank might think he still has leverage over the AD, but Weaver Whit ain't. I don't think Whit will hesitate one second to fire a hall of fame coach to protect VT athletics' bottom line.

The reality is, Beamer is a master at circling the wagons, deflecting criticism and doing a little revisionist history at the end of the season. Allow that to happen again and we look forward to more of this next season.

Maintaining a loud and persistent criticism, including tough questions during interviews ans demanding answers through the coachspeak prevents Frank from dictating the narrative as he's done multiple times in the past to gloss over a bad performance.

Right now what this program needs is for the seat under Frank's ass to be red hot. Accountability at the top is lacking, and a vocal criticism of this staff's failures will make it more likely to happen.

All the people saying Butch Jones is safe, I'm not sure you understand how irrational the Tennessee fanbase can be when they're losing. Butch Jones has yet to get a signature win for the Vols, despite having a 4th quarter lead in several potential ones. I'm not saying he's done, but a losing season this year and I doubt he's retained. Plus the AD at Tennessee is an idiot, so don't think some rational thought like a bottom line would prevent his firing. Bristol could very possibly be two brand new coaching staffs on the sidelines.

Absolutely agree. He was jeopardizing Motley's health, not just his playing career. God only knows what condition that shoulder is in.
