I honestly don't think we'll see either of them, and kind of took the quotes about each as confirmation of that. That's what surprised me about your comment of adding a fourth back to the rotation. Not that it would be unheard of, but that we just don't really have anybody left to add. I might be reading too far between the lines though.
Wait and see. It would shock me if they clear him to play, though. I think he's far from being game ready, even if the knee is cleared.
You're starting to make me wish this place had an ignore option.
Didn't the comment that Marshawn "will still require additional recovery time" indicate a pending redshirt for him? I thought that was pretty evident.

Since Bud has been or defensive coordinator for the entirety of this most recent series with ECU, I'm going back to 2010, Ruffin McNeil's first year as head coach of the Pirates. Note that we did not play ECU in 2012. That was the only redeeming quality of that season.

And in conclusion...

Where do you get that we're adding a running back to the rotation? With the news that Shai is expected to apply for a medical hardship waiver, who would be the fourth back?
Yeah, Motley carried the team Saturday, no doubt. The running backs could not get it going.
Thus far, Saturday marks the aberration to the typical running back performance this season. Whether it was a hiccup or the signal of a coming trend remains to be seen. Our performance against Pitt's 15th ranked rushing defense will tell us a lot about where the running backs are, and the ground game in general.
I...
But...
Because of an injury status report?
Mook and Adonis could wreck some shit.
I hate you for reminding me we play ECU as frequently as a division opponent.
Just kidding. You know I love you baby.
Okay, here it is, year by year total and scoring offense production against ECU under Loeffler:

I totally get frustration. But in general, we still blow the fuck up after a loss. I really hate to say this, but we simply cannot be surprised at this point, can we?
281 passing yards. Admittedly, mostly after the downpour passed over. But still. Damn, Motley.
Well, there's two ways to interpret this:
- If we lose again, I'm saying fuck this team.
- If we lose again, I'm admitting I can't take the stress and stepping away a bit.
I'll admit I did the latter in 2012. It got to the point where it was too much, felt like Frank was going to try every little wrinkle with assignment of duties he could to get out of staff shakeup. Felt like more of the same, and would continue to be more of the same until Beamer was forced out a la Bobby Bowden. Still a Hokie thorugh and through, but had to reassess my emotional investment and the negative impact poor performance of the team was having on my life. Stepping away was healthy for me.
Based on some conversations I've had in the last 48 hours here, I think some people really, really need to do the same. So if he means it that way, good on him.
To play to the average of the opponent when we had right around 160 or so yards at the half is good. It showed second half adjustment. Lefty and Motley put together one of the better halves of football we've played, but dropsies and a pick prevented it from being enough.
a guy who can carry the rock 20-25 times a game
Right now there are 19 running backs who are averaging 20+ carries per game, across 130 different FBS programs. That just really isn't the offensive model people are using today. It would be more realistic to hope for one back to get 15-20 carries per game, another back to get the bulk of the rest, and then some garbage time carries for third-plus stringers.
I don't get the angst over the three back rotation this season, except that maybe it's just been ingrained as a talking point among the fan base. Up until JCC shit the bed against ECU, all three backs in our rotation were posting good numbers. If JCC has another game like he did against ECU, you'll get a two back rotation.
Ed Sheeran has gone full creeper in this gif.
I don't see it, man. There are comments both in support of Beamer and critical of him. You seem to be obsessing over the supportive ones.
The defense is bad this year. Not down, bad. And I don't see people making many excuses. There are people pointing out WHY the defense is bad (LB depth, poor play by the young backup corners) but explaining the cause of poor performance doesn't excuse it.
The offense is improved this year. Big improvements in yards and point. Not a national powerhouse, but top 40 in yardage and scoring. I think people who are criticizing the offense are throwing the baby out with the bathwater. There's reason to be optimistic that what Loeffler is doing is finally paying dividends.
In general, we're 2-2 and pissed off about a quote that sounds like our head coach doesn't care. The quote's awful. I still want to hear it in context, for the same reason I want to know why JCC only averaged 1.8 YPC against ECU. Knowing that won't excuse the poor performance, but it will let me know if it was a blocking problem, a RB vision problem, or both, and tell me what to look for against Pitt. Knowing the full context of the "exhibition/preseason" comment won't excuse how awful of a quote it is, but it will tell me whether Frank has a view on non-conference games that's about 30 years outdated, or if he's trying to hit the reset button for his discouraged players and refocus on that goals are still attainable.
Also, if the mere expression of ideas you disagree with drives you to your recent behavior in the comments, it might be a good idea to do some soul-searching.
If I could make a somewhat off-topic meta suggestion, I think it might be time for TKP to institute some way to differentiate editorial posts from articles. A lot of the discord in these comments stems from the accusation of lazy reporting, but this isn't really reporting at all. It's editorializing.
The stated goal of TKP is to become the best source of information and journalism on Virginia Tech football and basketball. News sources need both articles and editorials. Both add value. Right now, the editorials are presented in the same format as the articles. I know your tag says "EDITOR," Joe, but I think TKP might further benefit from having a more immediately appreciable way to distinguish which type of piece the reader is being presented with. Your hot takes initial game reactions (see edit in my comment below and mea culpa for being unintentionally insulting), Pierson's "Slept On It" feature, Foe'rensics could all be tagged as editorials, while Mason and French's analysis and Joel's "By the Numbers" could carry the article tag. I think reader perception and reaction will be properly adjusted if they know going in whether they're reading something that's being presented as a journalistic article or an opinion piece.
All right, man. Just a suggestion.
ALSO... I just now realized the term "hot take" is considered derisive, and I apologize about that. I have always used that term interchangeably with "knee jerk" or "initial impression," and just now Googled it and realized it's considered a criticism. This was NOT my intent, and I now realize why that probably pissed you off. I won't ever get those terms confused again.
Our place in mediocrity is pretty well cemented, I just think some people are still in denial about it.
The first step is admitting you have a problem...
Sorry, bad wording on my part. I was just listing off the various pieces that are regulars on this site and dividing them into editorial vs article categories. You do hot takes. This wasn't one. A lot of the times you'll drop a knee-jerk reaction onto the site immediately following a game. You did it for Purdue. This was a way better formulated piece than those, but my point still stands.
On the tailback situation...
That first clip, my God, Gallo just gets blown the hell up. Was that happening all day? It seemed like Gallo held his block fine in the second clip, so I was wondering if the center getting blown off the snap was a theme on the day.
The second clip makes me want to punch something. Rogers is having a hard time kicking the defender out, but JC runs right into the middle of the block. The hole was razor thin, but JCC being as small as he is should have been able to hit the hole between the left tackle (was it McGlock or Nijman here?) and Rogers. Or if he's going to bounce it, at least bounce it all the way around the fullback block instead of directly into it. This could have been a 4 or 5 yard gain at the worst if JC just hits the right hole. It makes me wonder if JC getting over his fear of running into contact has now diminished his vision and patience as a runner because he thinks he'll just power through contact. He's still running with attitude and authority. He's still not posted a run for a loss. He just needs to find the hole he wants to hit.
Vision, man. Trey and JC are not showing the vision of upperclassmen, and it's been going on all season.
DESPITE this, though... Our running back game is okay. McMillian at 8.0 YPC is the leading running back playing for a team not running the triple option. With Trey's struggles, he's still averaging a respectable 4.2 YPC. JCC's numbers took a big hit this week, and now he's only averaging 3.7. For all the perceived struggles, this was the first game where one of the backs has looked demonstrably bad on every snap. Overall, the running backs continue to outperform the 2014 backs through an equivalent number of games, by a pretty wide margin.
I need to see if JCC's craptastic performance against ECU was an aberration, or a signal of an impending slump. And I'm guessing the coaches do, too. If Coleman has another day like today, look for our three man rotation to get whittled down to two. And that would really, really suck for a guy who has worked on his game to the extend JC has.
BC last year comes to mind.
Let's be honest, the penalized action was attempting to interfere with ECU winning the game.

I also pointed out to someone else today, in all of FBS football, there are currently 19 running backs averaging 20+ carries per game. A defined #1 back is an increasingly rarity in the college game. We pretend we're the only program that does this, when in fact it's becoming the norm.
