<shamelessplug>That's why I thought it would be neat to track offensive stats this year compared to last year.</shamelessplug>
Well, I was honestly just trying to have a bit of banter with someone who was referencing our conversation from the other thread, acknowledging I got the joke. It was more a nudge and a wink at the reference, rather than a jab at you. Sorry if you interpreted it this way.
Honestly, thanks for the explanation. I think you were trying to say this exact same thing over on that thread, but it kept cutting you off after you typed "Motley." I noticed it happened twice. Weirdness.
I knew all along you were tossing the sample size because it was so small, which is honestly understandable. I just wanted some clarification on why you said the other QBs were "clearly" better than Brewer and Motley. You've provided that. But I do disagree with using previous seasons to carry over claims about this season. Performance fluctuates year over year. See: Jones, Cardale. And it's doubly difficult to make firm statements about Motley's ranking in the ACC, because this is his first season of significant starting time. Sure, the argument that gets thrown around on here is that Brewer was clearly the better QB in the spring, and that's true. But there are some players who flourish in live game situations, and Motley might be one of those.
But again, thanks for clarifying your position. I know get where you're coming from, even if I don't see eye to eye with you on it.
Thanks, Joe. It's unfortunate but understandable.
FWIW, I'll say the only part I don't completely agree with is this:
- After I thought about it for a day, I emailed Andy and said it doesn't make sense for him to share his work on TKP. From a business standpoint, that's not a relationship to have with the competition.
I'm not sold on the idea that cross-promotion between journalists and blogs (which is what I would still consider TKP until a full-time beat writer is hired) is a bad business decision, even if you both mutually view each other as competitors. I've seen Andy credit TKP in his articles (including direct links to TKP content), and he would generate page views through posting his articles on the forum. I would think both parties benefited under the arrangement. If the sentiment above is a part of the TKP business model, as a donor with an emotional investment in this site (if not a vested interest), I question it.
And this this...
- Andy followed up and explained he was fine with our partnership until TKP started sending two people (Kevin and Joey) to every media availability. He articulated that they (Kevin and Joey) don't contribute to the discussion with the coaches and players. They essentially just record all the quotes off what the newspaper writers ask, and transcribe it for TKP. He was complimentary of TKP's film reviews, but TKP's latest work didn't sit well with him.
...just seems trifling. Transcriptions of media events are part of the business. If TKP was trying to pass off a reporter's question as their own content, then there would be an issue. But saying TKP's work doesn't sit well with him (assuming that's a direct quote and not paraphrasing) just seems like a rehash of print journalists' attitude about bloggers in general. I'll give Andy the benefit of the doubt that by the end of the exchange, perhaps tempers were flaring a little bit.
1 yard.
I can't believe I've the first person to do this.
Clearly that's not the case. /s
Our defense statistically being...not good.
This has actually happened quite a few times over Bud's tenure, when an early bad game or two tanked us out of the gate while we're still getting new personnel adjusted to game speed and situations. The trend is for a steady climb in the defensive rankings over the course of the season as the new players gel in their positions. I look for that to happen this season as well.
This would help if I had any idea what the hell my picks were.
Imagine for a moment that you're out and about and this family of four, two small kids, is nearby. One of the kids runs up to you and says, "My daddy has a flying train that goes through time. Mom mommy was born in the wild west!"
Your reaction would most likely be, "That's awesome, kid," and you'd go about your day as normal. Kids have a built in buffer to disrupting the timeline, because no one pays attention to the shit they say. They wouldn't be a liability so long as Doc knew the major historical events to keep them away from.
So, again, why begin any statement as "clearly?" You're making a definitive statement, but admittedly believe the sample size through 25% of the season is insufficient to draw strong conclusions. So why do you insist that other conference QBs are "clearly" better than Brewer and Motley?
Clearly not as good
...and that's where you lost me.
All of the above have small sample sizes. So it's hard to draw any firm conclusions about any QB so far this season. But with what we have to work with we know that:
Motley:
- Has a better passer rating than Golson, Williams, Kaaya and Thomas
- Has a better YPA than Watson, Brisset, Golson, Williams, Kaaya and Thomas
- Has a better TD:INT ratio than Watson and Williams, and is tied with Kaaya
Brewer:
- Has only two and a half quarters of sample size, but it came against the defending national champions
- Is statistically beating the everloving shit out of every other ACC quarterback
There is no clear picture that Motley is inferior to any other ACC QB with the possible exception of Brisset, who is setting the world on fire thus far. If the Brewer we saw against OSU is really who Brewer is as a QB, he's ACC POY material.
I'm in total agreement with you that Marty was an idiot when it came to time travel, so Doc telling Marty to destroy the time machine might have just been Doc's final acceptance that Marty was too dangerous to be allowed to continue time traveling. Like you said, Doc kept time traveling himself, and it was possibly because he could do it without completely fucking everything up.
As for needing enriched plutonium, the 1985 Delorian used that as a power source. But 1955 Doc also knew that a bolt of lightning would be sufficient to power the flux capacitor. So there's one alternate power source he could have designed a new time machine around. My guess is a guy as smart as Doc could come up with other possible fuel sources. And even if he couldn't, all he'd need to do would be to design one lightning-powered time machine, go into the future, pick up a Mr. Fusion, and then it's all good.
So long as Doc remembered that he had to design the Delorian to use enriched plutonium, he wouldn't be jacking up the timeline.
We were also stopping over to spend the night at my mom's place in the Tri-Cities.
Doc Brown was always worried about the preservation of the timeline, so he strikes me as the kind of guy that, if shown a time machine he built 30 years in the future, he would focus his entire life on making certain he was in a position to build it at the right point in time.
But Doc Brown also understood the value of human perception, evidenced by the fact that he realized wearing a bulletproof vest to save his life when the Libyan terrorists shot him wouldn't disrupt the timeline, because Marty had only seen him get shot and had no idea what his medical status was afterwards. So Doc could have made multiple time machines over the next 30 years, having tons of time-traveling adventures, so long as he kept Marty oblivious to it. Then when 1985 rolls around, all he would have to do is roll out the Delorian and act like it was his first attempt at time travel. Marty's none the wiser, and all the events that are mandated take place as they should.
Neither are more than average ACC QBs
Average ACC QBs with passer ratings of 191.90 and 161.75. (In admittedly small sample sizes.)
Speaking of patios, the outdoor seating at Sharkey's is great. We were driving from Virginia Beach to Asheville on vacation last year and stopped in Blacksburg for lunch. It was during the USA/Germany world cup match, so the inside was ridiculously packed, but we sat outside with the kids and it was great. That's a great corner in the summer. I can imagine it would be a little crazy outside on the weekends during the school year though.
I always look forward to the game previous!

Did it hurt anyone else's heart when the guy said VT was one game where they were most successful stretching the field last year?
He makes the same sound a cartoon character makes when he falls off a cliff.
The Durkinator.
I want this framed above my mantel.
Madden has spent his whole life doing a bad Yogi Berra impersonation.

TOTS was never really my bar. Power Hour at the Hokie House was mandatory attendance.
Brenden's mom?
Sooooooo...your entire argument is predicated on one drive?
68.8% completion rating, on pace to throw for 270 yards and 3 TDs, brah.

I can't remember the year (but it was recent-ish, like within the last five) that there was major hype around the defense, the line particularly, and then the first few games there were some pretty big defensive gaffes. I remember Pitt carving us up early in the year and there being major discord over it, because the line was supposed to be such a strength. So maybe the year before Pitt joined the ACC, when we had the non-conference home and home scheduled with them.
